Great build, with the roof & ground floor being the highlights. Just like @Redhead1982, I'm also not that big a fand of the rest of the middle two floors. The first floor is ok, a bit simple for my personal taste, but it's executed well and looks harmonious. The second floor windows feel to tall to me, too. On the other hand, very nice snot work around and literally in the the inverted arches, thumbs up! I also like the plate/tile combination used to achieve the stonework effect on the corners. I'll have to spend some time studying the roof construction, just because I love when people achieve things with Lego that Lego isn't really meant to do :D. And it looks amazing! The storefront also looks incredible, just simple & elegant.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks. That's the one I mentioned in my post, my very first modular. Town Hall in cool yellow is something I hadn't seen before, very interesting idea. Suddenly, the building fits in better in southern cities. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I'd be totally in favor of them using cool yellow on a modular (after all, I was inspired by cimddwcs cool yellow Trike Store to do own first modular ages ago). But with things going as they arem, the next might be medium azure or something (now that they established that with the small Creator houses). A brown one (as in reddish brown, like the Pet Shop Town House) would be great aswell, except for the sides of the sand blue building in AS, they haven't used that color again in modulars, even though it's a pretty good one. Still, I'm hoping for a color they haven't used before. I've recently been thinking that bright light orange might work in a modular - if used as a contrast color. So the main building could be dark red, or reddish brown, and then there'd be details done in bright like orange. Might look cool. -
Modular Pub – alternate build for 10264 Corner Garage
ReplicaOfLife replied to Versteinert's topic in LEGO Town
Outstanding. To be honest, I like the looks of this way better than the actual set! -
Amazing build, and the lighting just takes the cake! Also love it that you used the old 9V system for that. Wish that was still around.

In addition to the ones @mark1991t mentioned, there's also the famous case of the unloved Town Hall, which retired the same year as Grand Emporium, while Pet Shop remained on the shelves long after (and even got a new production run). -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Uh, sorry, that's not how I meant it. I meant that Lego would be more likely to introduce a color like that, but not that they'd then use it in a modular. Reading it back, I see I haven't made myself clear -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I don't see sand red making a comeback anytime soon, unfortunately. The umpteenth shade of blue, or yet another color in the pink/magenta/purple quadrant seem much more likely. And with 2020 being the general shitshow it is, I wouldn't be surprised if, instead of adding a color, Lego would go and discontinue a really cool one. I mean, who needs sand green, after all? Jokes aside, I'd really appreciate another toned-down color that works well in buildings. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Imho, in terms of concept, the three latest modular buildings were a major step forward from the story-ridden stupidity of Detective's Office and Brick Bank (that doesn't save Corner Garage from being a boring set, but at least it was ONE building, a big one at that, and didn't have weird play features). All three basically were believable (as far as that concept will go with Lego sets) buildings, with no pieces wasted to accomodate an unwanted storyline, and no conceptual inadequacies like stairways being shared between buildings, fake facades or being able to access the upper floors of one building only by going through others (as in Assembly Square, which otherwise was a big step forward, too). So let's hope that Lego for once doesn't screw things up and just continues on the path they're on. -
Epic build! And of course, Blacktron ships need smiling minifigs at the helm!

Lego City 2021 Rumours, information and discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to Powered by Bricks's topic in LEGO Town
Retiring the classic road baseplates has to be one of the stupidest decisions Lego made in the past two decades. From what I read about the replacements, they'll propably better fit in with AFOL layouts (who often have brick-built roads anyway), but that's about it. You need more of them for the same amount of road surface and the individual lanes are narrower at just 6-wide (most City trucks are wider, and the popular Speed Champions line just switched to 8-wide vehicles!). Did they ever look at the vehicles they are producing when they designed this?! Plus, and this is the most crucial part, imo: With just a few of the road baseplates, a kid can easily build up a suggestion of the city, and there was room to build stuff on at the sides. Granted, we all know Lego doesn't want kids to build anything other than the official sets anymore, but that's just ridiculously stupid. Imagination is everything when kids play with Lego, and the road baseplates provided ample room for the imagination to run wild. -
Anyone else find the Mosaic theme boring?
ReplicaOfLife replied to jxu's topic in General LEGO Discussion
My thoughts on this: These sets seem to be aimed more at people who aren't Lego fans, but wish for a unusual display piece. That might work, but I also think Lego is shooting itself in the foot a bit here - putting over 3000 round 1x1 plates or tiles on baseplates sounds like quite the punishment to me, so I don't think they will win many new long-term customers with this. Rather, I'd expect many of these to be sold off half- or quarter-built, with the sellers being put off of Lego for good due to the tedious nature of putting it together. Just think about it, it's like coloring by numbers, but even less fun. Fun fact: Mosaics actually were among the very first Lego sets ever (Sets 1300 & 1301 from 1955: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=1300-1#T=S&O={"rpp":"50","iconly":0}, https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=1301-1#T=S&O={"rpp":"50","iconly":0}). Apparently, they tanked. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I wouldn't mind black boxes - I rather like the look of the box of the Crocodile, for example. But I wish they'd focus more on what's in the box than the box itself. -
Absolutely brilliant! Nice snotwork on the facade, I like the way you used the vertical plates to achieve the stonework effect. The interior is stunning aswell, and I'll surely be back to pour over all the details some more. On first impression, the music and science classrooms especially caught my eye, and the vending machines in the cafeteria are absoltely spot on - brilliant design on those!
-
Great build! Love how each section has its own character, yet it all works together so well.
-
Good job on capturing the essence of those great Model Team sets. I recently built 5590 (after getting hooked by 5591), and your town scale version is instantly recognizable!
-
NIce work on all three buildings. I can imagine that there's a lot of snot work goind on to manage all those curves. The white building is my favorite, it looks very clean and cohesive (and I'm often drawn to symmetry)

Modular Botanical Garden with Sakura Tree, free instructions
ReplicaOfLife replied to Berthil's topic in LEGO Town
Wow, congratulations! That's propably unprecedented! Did you just contact them and they owned up to it, or was there some legal counseling involved? I think you're not the only MOCer they stole from, either... -
I second that. When I saw the one real picture in the midst of all those renders, I seriously asked myself if it actually was just an exceptionally good render. Then when I saw the link to flickr with the real pics, I just wondered why you didn't just post those. Decent real photos are pretty much always preferable to renders, imho - especially as it takes a whole dfferent kind of dedication to aquire and build something with real bricks, then 'just' posting pics of a digital build. Note, not slamming the creative effort that goes into digital builds in any way here - I know that it's hard work, too. I often plan my builds digitally aswell. But I just far prefer pictures of real builds. Anyway: I quite like this! Not entirely sure on the pink facade, but it seems to complement the other colors well. I actually like the pink building better overall. The facade (color aside) is nice and tidy, and the faux half-timbered section works well, too! The red/sand green building has great ideas and details, too, but the bay window feels a bit too smooth to me, compared to the rest of the building - almost as if it was added later. Of course, if that was the effect you were going for, kudos . Don't really get the ground floor facade with the telescopes in front of the castle windows, though. I've never seen something like that

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I'm very glad they returned to proper buildings with that line (as in: they abandoned the horrendous double-modular concept they introduced some years back with everything being constructed on 8x8 plates ready to be recombined. Those sets looked horrendous). I'm not so happy with the direction they took with regards to colors - the earlier sets in that line (e.g. bike shop & cafe, town house, corner deli etc) were brilliant parts packs as they mainly stuck to only 1 or 2 main colors, which usually were toned down colors that are easily reuseable, especially for a modular MOCer like me. But nowadays... I got two copies of 31105, because I need the 3 wide windows for my next MOC, but I'm still not quite sure what to do with all those azure bricks. I can't picture doing a building, or even a larger part of one, in that color, it's way too bright.. And 31097 is a great set, especially as finally they made a somewhat substantial building again, but it has 4 main colors for the walls, which of course means that there aren't that many pieces in each color in there. If they had just stuck to two, it would be much more useful. -
Oh, wow, I almost missed this. Great work as usual. I really dig your flamboyant building style, it always borders on 'too much', but you never fail to land on the right side brilliantly. Admirable you built an entire facade using just two different plates in nougat. To be honest, though, without you piointing it out, I propably wouldn't have noticed it - on the pictures the color is extremely similar to that of the left building (medium nougat, I think?). If you had contrasted it with a more different color, it might have popped more.
-
Sounds interesting Too bad it's not really visible on the photos.
-
Great build! Good work on limiting the piece count, it really doesn't show. From the looks of it, I'd have estimated around 3000 pieces at least.. Are all three floors fully furnished? Can't really tell from the pics.
-
Absolutely brilliant work! I could spent quite some time marveling at all the snot-work and build techniques.
-
Great work on the bay window! Thanks for posting the explanation how you built that - I was wondering how exactly the tiles were attached - suspected the basic technique, but was baffled by what parts might achieve it
