Why not directly go 3D? Like the file viewer that’s on the LDraw tracker (or, the older version on BrickLink). I think it’s free & libre.

More precisely: — For 3023: LDraw made a new 3D model, they named it 3023b.dat and obsoleted 3023.dat. Studio followed suit to allow the inclusion of decorated 3023. Older models still reference 3023.dat, newer models correctly reference 3023b.dat. Studio marks the “old” 3D models as “alternative LDraw model” in the Step List. The problem is that older models saved without modification in a newer Studio stupidly use “rename_3023.dat” and that breaks the .io upload on the website. — For 3069 (and 3070 and 3068): BrickLink had 3069 (undetermined), 3069a (without groove) and 3069b (with groove). That was confusing for buyers: 3069a are old and rare and expensive, sellers mostly didn’t use 3069 but 3069b. So they decided to merge 3069 and 3069b, and to remove the confusing “with groove” as it’s the default, modern part and all the other tiles are all with groove and without the text in their description. The LDraw 3D models weren’t changed. The only visible effect in Studio was in the naming of the parts. That shouldn’t impact loading, uploading, or parts lists, but maybe the website upload has problems with that too. — Heads: BL merged 3626b, 3626c, and 28621 (all the hollow studs) into 3626, only 3626a (plain stud) remains as a variant. That means that it has a mix of effect and non-effect. For instance the plain parts 3626b and 3626c are now considered “alternative LDraw model,” because they are variant that are no longer recognized by BL. For some decorated parts, it’s transparent because they didn’t have multiple 3D models, so only the BL ID changed. — Slope 28192: For way too long, Studio had a 3D model that came from LDD. It was slightly wrong and it caused problems when importing from / exporting to LDraw. The 3D model was recently changed to the official LDraw model. As the part’s default position and orientation changed, that messes up your older 3D models (only in Studio, not in Early Access, which is another pain). — Ingot 99563: Studio used 96910.dat from LDD, now it uses 99563.dat. It’s like 3023 but, AFAICT, with fewer problems. And there were a few other parts that changed in the life of Studio (I remember the lantern, the 1x4x3 brick…). Correcting “en masse”: I made a small and ugly tool that can correct/modify parts in .io files: io_mod.html. By default, it corrects 28192, 99563 and 3023. It only works on recent .io files, and the files need to be saved again in Studio to be correct. A bit more info here. To use it: — download this zip, — unzip, open io_mod.html in a (recent) browser, — open and force-save your files in Studio to be sure they are in latest version, — feed the .io files to the tool, — download all the generated mod_*.io files (no active link = something went wrong), — open, check, and force-save them in Studio.

Parts are updated regularly. Those parts updates are done separately from the application update and they are not advertized. When Studio starts, it checks for them (and for “contest” palettes, like BDP) and download them.

Hi, When doing the instructions, the author can add a 1:1 size guide on the pages the axles are used. Colour coding (always use different colours for different sizes) is also a solution. The author can also insert some text or image with the length. There’s unfortunately no way to do that automatically in Studio. But if the author didn’t do any of this, you’ll need to search the part in the model and look at its name in the Status Line (at the bottom of the screen) or the Step List (on the right). if they didn’t change or add parts from the set, you can check its inventory (seems even lengths are Black and odd ones LBG).

Hi, There's no password anymore on Studio files nowadays. So they are just Zip files. And there's been a few other modifications. First, try to extract your .io file with standard Zip tools (7-zip for instance). If that doesn't work, well, mostly there's no way to get back your model. And if that works, look at these three files in that order, they are all plain text files: model.ldr: look at its size, if it's not 0, then open it in Studio, you should get back your model. modelv2.ldr: look at its size, if it's not 0, then open it in a simple text editor (like Notepad). You'll need to edit it to make it a true LDraw file. For that, you edit all the lines that start with “11”: replace the “11” with “1”, don't touch the second number, delete the third number, the “False” and the number just after. For instance, “11 4 1260 False 0 -130.000000 -60.000000 -89.999980 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 3070b.dat” should become “1 4 -130.000000 -60.000000 -89.999980 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 3070b.dat”. That's lots of work… unless you now how to write scripts…. Once the file has been edited, it should be exactly what model.ldr would have been. You can try to open it in Studio. model2.ldr: look at its size, if it's not 0, then you'll need to edit it even more than the previous one: you'll need to change all the colour codes (second number on each line) from the BrickLink code to the LDraw code and you'll need to cut all the bits that define things that are not needed… which is quite complicated to explain.

Okay. I don’t think that’s something many people will use and so making an option for that is too much work. So here’s a solution just for you: Open lxf2ldr.js in a simple editor (Notepad or such), go to line 500 and replace “push” by “unshift”, the line will then be: siblings.unshift( g ); This builds the list in reverse order.

The .zip contains the unofficial subfiles only. If a subfile is official, it’s not included… but Studio is still releases away from the last official LDraw release, so it’s missing those files. For instance, the part mentioned above, 48156p01, has a subfile, but the tracker doesn’t propose to download the Zip with both the main file and the subfile. You need both for PartDesigner/Studio.

Those parts are available in LDraw Unofficial. You’ll need to use PartDesigner to add connectivity and to import them in Studio as custom parts. A bit more info on the Parts FAQ on the Studio forum (you need a BL account to read it).

Using Rebrickable is fine… but exporting to HTML and then using Excel is what I find overly complicated. Yep, that’s the one :) It’s indeed more oriented toward sellers but it’s great for managing parts lists / Wanted Lists and orders. Better than juggling with multiple formats and Excel. What I find it’s missing is a way to manage a builder collection: a list of sets & MOCs, some built, some not, and, from that, an automatic list of available parts or an easy way to find what set/MOC you need to scavenge for that one elusive part. Rebrickable has something similar: you can tell it if a set you have is built or not… but I find it’s a bit complicated for MOCs (or subsets).

Oh boy, that’s complicated. Why not simply use BrickStore?

Hi all, Now that Studio’s Eyesight has been open sourced, I managed to build and run it natively on Linux 🥳 and to make Studio use it seamlessly 🥳🥳 and with the GPU too 🥳🥳🥳🥳 If someone wants to give it a try, I wrote a howto.

There’s a buffer exchange feature but it only allows to move parts in the current step.

Studio is more resistant to changes these days… but you need to stay in the Instruction Maker: don’t go changing steps or creating/releasing submodels in Build mode, do it in Step Editor. That may still mess up the instructions for the current submodel but the next ones are generally resilient now.
