I just got home from taking my wife to see the new POTC and was reading this thread I started a little while ago. I was shocked to see 3 guests were reading it. I am sure all the members lost faith in my finishing of this vessel some time ago. I just took all of my Legos out of boxes and bags, and just put this ship back together the way you saw it previously. Does anyone think I should make the spacing between cannons be 6 studs instead of 4, or should I use the small cannons that are about 2 studs wide? I tried putting non-moc cannons in it and there isn't any room to move around for the men. I am aware that old threads shouldn't be brought back unless something new and/or extreme is added, but don't shoot me down as I have gotten somewhat excited about finishing this and want a touch of input. I just built the same ship last night. I am going to keep mine unmodified, but will add 13 crew, a rowboat and 4 cannon to make it more effective in battle. I really like the ship as is, but if I were to improve it i'd start with making the castles a bit larger and more correct.

The Imperial Raft This is a raft that was inspired by the movie Master and Commander. It is from the scene when they build a raft to trick the phantom ship into chasing the raft rather than their own ship. In the move there was only one person on the raft, but I put three on mine and a shark to increase playability. Small set entry Pieces: 97

BlueBard You have created an amazing MOC! That’s a crazy amount of pictures, but I greatly enjoyed them all. If I made this, the outcome of the story would have turned out differently, as the Imperial Guards (the British) shall always prevail. What is the tower you didn’t take a close up of, that’s on the right, front side of your town? I have never seen that black Imperial Soldier torso before, is that something you made? I look forward to seeing more detail on your ship. Duke

WOW!!! All three prizes are indeed amazing. Any one of them would be a great addition to anyone's collection. I'd like to thank those who participated in creating this wonderful contest. Not only has it has drawn in quite a number of new MOCs, but there are simply awesome prizes too. I am waiting on a Bricklink order to enter my 3rd MOC. Best of luck to everyone.

Hello Everyone Here is my entry for the large set. The HMS Aspire Pieces: 192 She is used primarily for patrols in shallow water. Armed with two small cannons, she is formidable against vessels of similar size. Here she is about to do battle with a pirate. Here is an overview of all the minifigs, weapons, utensils, cannons and a view of the ship with the door to the storage area open.

First of all excellent Review! 5/5 for me. I have yet to attain one of these sets. It has a nice trio of men including a redcoat, and a nice assortment of weapons. The rest, such as the leaves, is great for MOCing. If I saw 5 of these sitting on a shelf I would certainly buy all 5, then I would ask to speak with a manager to see if there is any way I can attain more pirate Lego stuff. One should not step into the pirates domain and give a mere 1 to any non4+ pirate set. Duke

I get my troops mostly from Bricklink and Ebay. I “try” to span it out over periods of time, but sometimes opportunities come and I have to take them. That makes it easier to swallow the large price to be had for the Imperial Guards. If you’d like to know what I do for a living; I am a member of management at one of the largest retail stores in the world. (I think it is in the top 20 or something like that.) Thanks bro! Thank you for the compliment. I never abandoned it. The $8 price per window (11 were needed) temporarily put the brakes on it. I also had a lot going on within the build time, including getting married, having a baby, being promoted and buying a nicer vehicle. Don’t worry, I will show it ready for sea when it is finished. I like the way the rear looks, but I think it may need more yellow. What do you guys think.

Thank you kindly for your offer of assisting me in my build of the HMS Victory. I do however have a book that outlines seemingly every detail of the great ship. It includes blueprints of every deck and of the ship from every view imaginable. It also tells in detail about the crew, the different armaments it had over the years, how much of each provision it carried, plus much more. I do have a scanner and if you are interested I could assist you in your build too. I am currently attaining the crew that will be needed to man the ship. It needs 975 (including marines) and I have over 700, to mimic the Battle of Trafalgar. Also, I have plenty of cannons to arm it including the different sizes. When the HMS expedition is complete I will be starting on it. I don’t know how big you plan on making it, but to minifig scale would require it to be about 7 feet long without the bowsprit. It also was outfitted with as many as 108 guns (1780-1802) and as few as 21 (1823). To get better at photography, all you have to do is practice. Oh, and having a nice camera helps too.

Thanks for the compliment. Like I said though, it isn’t complete which includes the rudder What do you mean you’ll be racing me. Thanks for the compliment. Do you have pictures of yours? I too will be making an HMS Victory. That is the ship my brother wants me to work on. If you look closely at the cannons you’ll notice there is a short one, a medium one and a long one. I plan to use the short ones at the rear, long ones up front and medium ones for the middle.

Here are some updated pictures of the HMS Expedition. The reason there was such a gap in this work in progress is because those little yellow windows with the white lattice cost about $8 each, and I needed 11 of them. It is not complete yet, as I have some Bricklink orders coming to do so, but it will be soon. My brother Phred designed the figurehead and I believe it looks fantastic. The center castle is complete and when finished, the other two will look similar. Duke

The non-firing cannons are hollow and have no spoke. Of course I hit my brother, pause, not! It did leave a crater in the sand though.
-
When I was a young person and had one of the first non-shooting cannons, I did an experiment in the sand box. I stuck a firecracker in the cannon and stuck the fuse out through the hole in the Lego cannon ball. I lit it and BOOOOM!!!, right into a wall of sand. That was really cool and from what I can remember it didn’t damage the cannon, but it may have left some black residue though. Today however, I wouldn’t do anything like this or even modify my prized cannons.

Nice ship lad. You have done a nice job micronizing a massive vessel. How many guns does it have? If the yellow non-slope bricks on the side represent gun ports it appears to be a 24 gun ship. Duke….hmm this is what I have been called since I was 2 weeks old and have never had to compete with anyone for sole rights to being called this. This may get confusing.

What do you do with your ships after you build them?
Dukesc replied to SkaForHire's topic in LEGO Pirates
If I only have one of the model, whether it’s a ship or structure I like to keep it bone stock. I have several shelves full of complete or nearly complete pirate sets as I acquire them. Then if I like it enough I buy one or more of it and modify it to my liking. I prefer to do all of my MOCing with pieces from Bricklink, Ebay or Wal~Mart, not from whole pirate sets. I want to display them without having to dust them. For now I am putting all my troops in drawers and keeping everything else on open shelves, but the room is cut off from the rest of the house (minimal air circulation and dust). I think the only answer will be to build some enclosed shelves with glass. -
That is a very large MOC you are making. This lad, looks like an awfully frightened soul. He is a blue admiral, Governor Broadside, he should be in charge and proud of what you are creating for him.

Any of these would indeed be fantastic. An accurate minifig scaled ship is what I would want, but I don’t think many people would be able to afford it, especially for children. They can’t just give us something to raid, plunder and pillage for Lego can’t assume everyone already has ships. Thus, they would have to make at least one ship to complete the theme. I think any of these would be great as long as they aren’t <insert that tiresome argument>. Although I am hoping in the near future they will come out with something piratey, I am pretending they won’t and am building my military as such.

How did you get the ship to go from a 16 (at least that's what I'm assuming) wide hull, and then turn into 24 at the stern? How many center-sections is that? It appears to be around 6. Would a soldier with a shako be able to go in the lower gun deck? Are you modeling this vessel after the HMS Victory?
-
Good work so far. I was wondering what some of the buildings are going to be. You have a store and a tavern that you have talked about thus far. What will the white building be? What do you mean by that red and yellow building being a red dock? Do you have pictures of the fortress? I am looking forward to some progress pictures.

I agree with everyone in that this is a marvelous ship. The shape, colors, contours its all done with a keen attention to detail. I do, however, have a couple questions. Why are the cannons mounted directly to the ship? Also, why is the spacing of the cannons somewhat sporadic? There is a gap of 9 studs and then 2 studs between port holes.
-
The size of the top gun ports are around 4x4, so I think the figure is likely around 2x2. The lion head figure is 2x3. I still think you can't beat it if going for realism and how else can you get close to that 3d figure?
-
I have to disagree with you guys on this one. I don't think that the figure on the real ship is smaller than 2x3x3. In fact I would bet that it is very close to that, if not bigger. If anything you could make your extension a bit taller to make the figure look right at home. I honestly feel that this is as close to the real thing you are going to get. There are also tan and dark gray ones available on bricklink, if you want to look at more color options. Duke

This is a very nice little ship. I like the wake you made with the little clear pieces and also the little blue pieces as waves. Good use of pieces to make such a petite ship.

The Imperial Flagship gets my vote. It is my all time favorite set. It is also my first ever Lego pirate theme set and holds much responsibility in my being here. I own both and figured the CC would dominate this pole.
