  1. That's what we've been arguing about for the past page or so. The whole "half-a-vahi" comments seem to suggest some sort of link between the two continuities, but Darth Vader, who apparently has advance knowledge of the new story, claims that this is not the case. While I'm still puzzled as to why the fellow at NYCC would have said what he did if he didn't mean to imply a link between the two universes, given the questions that he was apparently asked, DV is not the sort to idly say "There's no connection," so I'm inclined to believe him. @Tazakk Yay, more emoticons! Thanks!
  2. We also know of at least two large craters (one oceanic and one volcanic) from the product descriptions (Gali's and Tahu's respectively.) Given that Ekimu was shown dormant in a crater, I imagine that they are of some significance (the most obvious explanation being that they are the respective resting places of the two brothers.)
  3. The first time I saw the Stars was in my local Toys R Us, on either 19 or 20 November. They were, however, an unusually early release (due no doubt to the size of the wave and the sets therein,) and I can think of few other constraction sets to materialize so soon. The only other ones that come mind are the Rahaga, who showed up at the same store in November of 2004. Normally, I have to wait for early to mid (usually the latter, if memory serves me correctly) December to see the newest constraction sets.
  4. Just because the new Toa have phobias and social problems and whatnot does not mean they will lack the aforementioned flaws (though I count compassion as a virtue.) LEGO, however, is not going to mention them in the character bios, lest the characters become less attractive to the target audience. Imagine if Pohatu was described like this: A young child is not as likely to think "Pohatu is greedy, which is bad, but he is still a good and likeable person." The more likely thought is "Pohatu is greedy, that's bad, I don't like him." EDIT: Ninja'd!
  5. What's wrong with three-year plot arcs? I'd say it's quite feasible for an arc of three years to be executed well. As long as there is a true progression of the story through the years, without too much filler, I see nothing wrong with not limiting a story to one year. The end of 2006 aside, none of the things you mention seem to indicate contrived prolongation. Am I missing something?
  6. What else would the face-hugging be for? I doubt that LEGO would want to portray the spiders as actually savaging faces. Too grim for the target audience in general, methinks. I found this interesting: So he's a guardian, not a mustache-twirling conqueror. This makes make wonder if the Skull Spiders are akin to the Bohrok, helpful creations gone awry. Their purpose seems to be to destroy. Perhaps they are like the Bohrok and the Krana wrapped into one?
  7. Indeed, his bio on the Bionicle website states
  8. I appreciate the cost-effectiveness of stickers, though I simply wish they were easier to apply properly. As someone who is prone to occasionally obsessing with minute discrepancies, I am sometimes annoyed at being unable to apply one with perfect symmetry (despite the fact that printed pieces, such as minifigure legs, are often asymmetrical.) Obviously, that's a lot to ask for, but I feel that LEGO might at least include extra stickers on a regular basis (as has been done with some sets.) Mind you, I by no means hate stickers, and I'm much better at applying them than I used to be. But I can see why people might not be thrilled by their use. I do agree that printing on pieces limits their re-usability (though if one is really desperate, one could always remove the printing via certain substances.)
  9. Fascinating. So they named the Vahi? Or did they simply say "Mask of Time?" I'm puzzled by how this can be considered a soft reboot by any standards. Even if they do go the Abramsverse route, that's pretty close to a hard reboot. Makuta, a mask maker in the manner of Arthahka or Karzahni and brother to Ekimu? Lewa, Toa of Plantlife and Air? The Mask of Creation, the work of Ekimu? Given the apparent contradiction between the term used and what has been confirmed so far, I'll assume that they have a very different definition of "soft reboot."
  10. Greg recently posted this on the LMBS: This seems to be more than his analysis of it. A few days earilier, he posted this: ( I can't find the exact post, this was posted in the Greg Compendium on BZP.)
  11. Granted, we never knew for certain if the Turaga's tale was true, but in a meta sense, we knew that there was a Mata Nui. Why else would the plot have been so devoted to him? If the Toa had been trying to awaken a myth, the story would have lost something. Besides, we know very little of the two brothers' background in the new story. Where did they come from? How did they obtain their crafting skill? How are they connected to the villagers and the Toa? For all we know, the story given in the animation could be a distorted account, like the Mata Nui legend.
  12. Really? As of 2001, all we knew was that in the "before-time," the Great Spirit Mata Nui descended from the heavens, bringing with him the Matoran, before being struck down by his jealous brother, Makuta. The six mysterious Toa had to defeat him. It was up to them to go collect masks (decidedly collectables, what with their seventy-two+ variations and their supplemental packs.) The two stories seem quite similar, actually. For Mata Nui you've got Ekimu. For Makuta the Eldritch terror you've got Makuta the mask-maker. For Mata Nui's slumber you've got Ekimu's and Makuta's. You've got an island. You've got Toa. You've got mask-collecting, You've got villagers. You've got beasts as enemies. You've got the legendary mask macguffins (ala the Vahi, Avohkii, and the Ignika.) So far there's been no mention of a slumbering robot titan or some such thing, but then, there was no obvious mention of one in 2001, either. For all we know, the new BIONICLE could have a story arc which will blow the Mata Nui one out of the water.
  13. I fail to see why an alternate timeline is the Toa's likeliest point of origin. Surely either below Okoto (ala the original story) or above it (the two planetoids) are more probable?
  14. Is there any evidence for this, beyond the comparison to the Trek reboot?
  15. Unless Makuta becomes a popular name in Spherus Magna's future, I rather doubt it. :P Out of curiosity, what are their reasons for thinking so? EDIT: Ninja'd by GK733! Ah, so that's what they mean. It's always possible, but it seems terribly superfluous. Besides, Lewa's BIO states that he "Communes with plants and the wind," so he's decidedly different than his Gen1 counterpart.
  16. Pohatu's background art also has them. Regardless of whether they have a bearing on the story, they're yet another fun little nod to the original story.
  17. I agree that the chrome masks would be more exciting. However, if they are only going to give away one mask at Comic Con, I can see why they would choose to save the chromes for another promotion. Alternately, they might be giving out the chrome masks, simply on different days. How long does NYCC last? Oh, and for those who want a chance to win a Spectral Omega Hau, simply retweet this official tweet.
  18. The legacy continues! Now all we need is for Lewa to have wheels, and #Turbo2015 will be a reality!
  19. Well, this has been an exciting two days! It's interesting to see that Makuta has been made a bit more like Karhzahni and Artahka. I like the brothers bit, it's (yet another) nice callback to the Mata Nui years. As for the lack of a Mata Nui, I think that's a good thing. If the story still had a character by that name, fans would be prone to assume that he's a giant robot, made by the Great Beings on Spherus Magna, etc. This way, there are no preconceptions, and the story team consequently has a lot more liberty. The more that's revealed about the new Bionicle, the more excited I am. I like the direction it's taking. "On one hand, Lewa finds new ways, on the other these ways sometimes lead to new trouble!" Onua's going to come in handy. :P "Powers: Communes with plants and the wind" This is an interesting resolution to the whole "Lives in Jungle but controls Air" issue. It definitely makes him one of the more powerful Toa. Wait, so that FAQ document was forged? Or was it simply erroneous?
  20. Assuming that it is writing at all. It seems to be the same pattern on the Mask of Creation, which, as someone pointed out, is symmetrical, suggesting that meaning is not intended.
  21. Indeed, hence discrepancies like the alternate Tuyet's (whose status as such was a retcon, I think) corpse. That said, I believe that the story team deliberately refused to portray graveyards in Bionicle or to answer the question of whether the MU's inhabitants buried their dead, because they intended to do something unusual with that element of the story. I could quite easily be wrong.
  22. Possibly, but they don't have laser capabilities.
  23. What giant scorpion are you referring to? As for the cities, I believe that they came to look that way due to the inhabitants of the MU building upon them. As for sending Mata Nui into space, the Great Beings were simply biding their time while Spherus Magna healed, hoping to learn what they could of the rest of the universe via Mata Nui's travels. They didn't count on their nanotechnology gaining sapience. But they were definitely lacking in wisdom, hence the Core War and everything that followed.
  24. There were new Matoran, they were simply created by hidden factories, rather than by biological reproduction. In fact, Time Trap suggests that Vakama is no older than 15,000 years.
  25. Matoran do not reproduce, nor do most (if not all) of the MU's other species. This has been confirmed in a number of places. As for their potential extinction, it is worth noting that the Great Beings intended them to be only nano-technology, with the purpose of keeping Mata Nui up and running. They originally planned for most of them to be disassembled after serving their purpose. And as for those who died while the robot was still running, they could either be replaced by hidden factories, or resurrected by the Red Star (though this one didn't quite work out, to be fair.)
