hey all, so another year another calendar. I've shown off a few of this years MOCs before, but here's the pics that made the cut. (you can see last years thread here... http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=102510 ) The cover shot to celebrate the Park Services 100th Anniversary (also the August pic). A Two Door JK and CJ5 in Island in the Sky Four Door JK's (one Expedition prepped) and some XJ's on Fins and Things A gnarly custom crawler Jeep and a spotter in a JK (he took the bypass), all geared up for Easter Jeep Safari A Setup JK (with LED bar and winch) and the Expedition JK hitting the washes. A old curmudgeon and his Navy issue Willys to celebrate Armed Forces Day on the 21st Although the willy grill was definitely inspired by others i have seen i did my best to make it my own and build it without directly relying on others. I think i made some nice moves with using the old dark grey and the flags for seat back as well as a neat trick where i used lightsabers and 1x1 bricks with 4 side studs to create smaller red side markers on the back corners. you can't see the markers in the previous pic, but you can see in this earlier rev here (before i changed the window frame)... A stock XJ overlooking the White Rim A classic CJ8 with a truck cab top and classic wood trim sides near Uranium Arch (my favorite Jeep of this project) A YJ and CJ5 on the trail. Both of these Jeeps were in last year's calendar, but the YJ got a facelift and I reworked the grill to give it a better YJ look. I'm especially proud of the SNOT cheese slope move on the front to give it a better looking front grill. A tricked out, no-door YJ Crawler making light of a little climb. This one I was going to build with a full on exo-cage, but it ended up being too much so I stripped it down for a cleaner look. A Girl Powered top down purple JK crawl under a LEGO scale arch. The purple was actually really hard and expensive to get parts for, originally there was six 1x1 plates in the design, but when I realized that part was only ever available in the Harry Potter Knight Bus set, I had to redesign it down to only needing 2 since it was impossible to even find someone with 6 of them. Santa's red CJ5 stuck in some snow in the La Sals....hopefully the elves can dig him out :) The back cover with a couple in their CJ5 with a UTV hot on their trail. Finally here's a shot of us out on the trail with our UTV with some a custom decal i made :)

cool, yeah the bumpers might not be that great on yours, for mine, i hated having the different tires so i used the wider rims/tires in front and the 7 wide bumper was a good way to de-emphasize that fact. the mirrors would look pretty good though, for sure.
-
love these. i did a similar build when i recreated my old RV which was based on a ford F650. my scale was a bit larger than yours, but here's a pic of it for a few ideas you could use... things i came up with that i think would work well on your trucks is... - the rear view mirrors, i wanted to incorporate a blind spot mirror and was a bit tired of the conventional truck mirror based on the hinged plates. i used some clip plates and a 3m bar to mount a tall mirror and small blind spot mirror. i like how you can put the in different positions which most trucks do, and i liked the fact that the bar makes it look like the big mirror mounts that trucks have. - my cab was 6 wide and the box was 8 wide, but you may notice i made the effort to make a 7 wide bumper and i think it really works well and i think a 7 wide bumper would look great on those trucks too. - you can't see it in this picture, but like you i used a technics thingy on the front axles to exaggerate the front hub, but unlike yours, i used rear wheels with axle holes instead of round holes. those rims have more of a recess which gives the front and rears a more distinct look and makes the rears look more like duallies.
-
not too shabby, i'm not sure i'd give up the speedo and grab bar personally, but still, i like it. i recently did a CJ8 version of this build as well (you can see in the back i've also revised my YJ design)...

not sure if that's an unpopular opinion :)
-
so much yes!

ha, yeah i agree it's bit of dumb color, but i hate the caste wall panel pieces 100x more. at least with the yellow castles you got a decent amount of bricks. i hate the manufactured rarity of some stuff. if people are paying $3k for a grey market millennium falcon then re-release it! i might pay a few bucks for a rarer fig, but i'll never like SW or Lego enough to drop that much money on a toy that was originally like a 10th of that price. i hate how so many good sets on ideas gets passed up for yet another licensed set (although i did love the ecto-1) i also hate the police/bad guy thing, but unless your a 9yo boy i don't think that's an unpopular opinion. it's like the pirate thing though, i mean criminals and cops, talk about murderers and rapist. if you were a little boy who watched your parents brutalized by a cop or a robber, you'd probably not be a big fan of those sets. i like the friends sets in general, although still hate the figs. at least it brings in some new colors and minifig accessories and has more substance besides cops and robbers.

amen, huge things that look like straight from a computer render just don't do it for me. if more macro models were packed with insane details, then that's a different story, but when it's just blocky shapes clearly made from a computer generated model, i'm not impressed (only jealous of the insane amount of bricks).
-
so jealous.

ha! awesome! welcome to eurobricks :)

thanks :) yeah, it's true but i do have a contingency plan. the row of small bins on the red wall could get a whole other row and there's lots of space in the closet for more bins or overflow bins. my plan is to weed out older brick or just keep large caches of newer bricks in their own type/color containers in the closet. even though i'm not big on the small hardware bins for like screws/nuts, i may go with a set of those for organizing technics parts, that's the one bin that's going to get hard to search thru as it fills up.

nice! yeah color sorting is definitely better than no sorting and great if kids are involved :)
-
very cool! nice to know it's inspired some folks. i wish i was close to an IKEA! the nearest one to me is 4 hours away :) -drew

yeah that is definitely a problem, so far only one thing has fallen in, but if it gets to be a common occurrence i may have to just replace that grill with something more removable. yeah i was selling them on Etsy, i think they only noticed b/c the calendar i made got some press on TLG's facebook page so it sent them snooping into my etsy store. it was mainly a bummer since there are sooooooo many more gross violations of their trademark and copyright on etsy. they were nice about it and all, they just object to anything that uses a minifig's likeness. so it goes.
-
thanks again everyone! thanks :) i was a bit bummed lego lawyers came after me for the decal since it was an original illustration and there's like hundreds of people selling straight rip offs of lego artwork on etsy, but that's the way it goes. sweet! yeah i like them a lot as i'm not a fan of the rubbermaid drawer look, just too plasticy for my taste. I really like the large bins and my only complaint is i wish that the small bins were shallower and came in a 3x3 layout instead of 2x3, still they are a good size as long as they don't get too full. one tip i'd suggest for the trofast bins is put backer board on them that way you can shut the drawers easily and they all look uniform, plus it prevents bricks from falling being the frames. brick on!
-
that is big, maybe on the bottom edge u could somehow use some wing/wedge plates to give it an edge?
-
nice, yeah it looks less like a van that way. brick on!
-
wow frontpage! woot! thanks again for all the nice comments! ha, yeah, it would be nice to have more room, but i don't get too attached to MOCs or set builds, it's one reason i'm so torn about buying modulars, they are really cool to keep, but when i build them all i can think about is all the awesome bricks they come with...clearly i need to just start buying two at once :) ha, yeah that would have been cool, but i had like 10ft of lights not being used, so white was a lot cheaper :) yeah i like them too, they're a good size for sure. had i not built the play area first i might have gone the cheaper route and only bought the bins and just made some frames myself, but since i had some already (and it was less work) i just bought more frames, but the cost of them does add up for sure :) also if anyone is interested, he's an overview of how the bins are labeled... there are a few left over groups i need to make bins for (for now they're in odd bins or PAB cups in the closet)... - modified plates (larger than 1x2), this was my biggest mistake, not sure how i forgot about these - wedge bricks (initially i was just going to group these with slopes, but the slopes bin is a bit crowded so i thought i'd separate) - nacelles - vertical wing/stabilizers - friends figs (daughter won't let me toss them :) ) - weird bits and bobs, like flames, random mixel or bionicle parts also, i had initially forgot about corner bricks/plates (again not sure how) but i made room for them and might separate them out into two bins in the future. i also will probably separate hinges and turntables as well since that bin is a bit crowded as well.

thanks again all! i am pretty pleased with the outcome, i'll be more pleased with myself when i finish the deck i need to build :) nah it wasn't a problem before when we had it in the basement (which is oddly always freakin' dusty). i'm sure some get in there and after like a year you might notice it, but most dust settles on the top of bin frames/shelf so it's hasn't been a problem. it's more of a problem with displayed models, but I'm not into the glass case look so I'll just deal with it. it's probably more of an issue with stupid pet hairs, but this new room is off limits the cats so hopefully it will be better than it has been.

thanks again everyone. for now there is room on the shelves, but i'm sure that will get crowded. there's a few places i can add more shelves and i figured if it gets too crowded i can rotate stuff in/out of the closet. I'm actually not a big keeper of builds, especially sets, so i'm not too worried about it. i'd rather have bins full of parts. :) there are lids for those bins at ikea but it would be a pain if they were there. dust hasn't been an issue and i live in a pretty dusty place with occasional high winds. thanks, it's for my 10yo daughter. that whole side of the bench is hers so she has a place to keep her builds and make a her own mess. i cut the counter surface so that it's two equal sized pieces which is nice because it draws the border between our spaces. she still likes playing on the floor with friends, but when it's just us she'll hang at the table.
