A great place to start when building a model of a specific train is to research the real life example, look for photos, specifications and so on. on bricklink, create a wanted list, then use a program called brickficiency to search the cheapest stores. there is another good place called brickowl.com

Here is a fantastic tool you can use to scale your models while building, I use it a lot. Be sure to use accurate drawings though and not photographs as photographs can be distorted. http://scaler.sariel.pl/

This is some great information, thank you for sharing, do you use LED's with the light sensors to make them more reactive? if so any particular LED's?

This is fantastic!! I would love to see some of the Arduino solutions you have made. How yo interfaced them with the trains and the rail.

I sure can, the curve is an R88. I don't, sorry, I learnt from watching you tube videos, what worked best for me is to wire wool the aluminum shiny, heat it up with a plumbers propane gas torch, dip the solder wire in aluminum flux and they lay the solder on the joint area with the heat on.

Some of you fine folks have asked about the custom rail that I have been making, I have currently make plastic and metal, The plastic is ok but I am still struggling with the restrictions of power functions only, so decided to work only on metal rail. I am using Aluminum code 250 rail, it comes in 96" lengths and is 1/5 of the price of Nickle silver, however ........it is a challenge to solder / braize. I have to practice a lot to get the technique. here are the beginnings of the 5 wide switch I am creating.

Thank you all for your posts, Here are a couple of updates, transmission is fixed, this first picture was the original one using M motors, there was so much torque that it was pushing the bevels apart, using inspiration from the emerald night I created a complete new drive using one L motor.. The train copes just fine on regular Lego curves and switches, however it does not like flex track (who does ha). I gave it a tow test pulling two of my class 455 coaches and it ran great. Track, I have created some alternative 9v rail, development is still in its youth, I am waiting for more Lego parts to do more testing with it.. It is using aluminum code 250 G scale rail and seems to be working out pretty good so far, Lazarus has also been testing with this method of power rail, he has a good informative thread going. I am in the middle of creating a switch with the same rail which is 80 studs long, 28 wide, basically 5 sections of straight rail long and 1 base plate wide
