Technic 2019 Set Discussion
AVCampos replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Since it has two hubs and more than four motors, it has everything needed to have, even as a fan-made C-model, two vehicles to battle each other, like Sumo: it'd only require an extra phone. A bit like @Philo's Kill Dozers, which use the parts from the 8275 Bulldozer but require an extra battery box and transmitter. -

I think it's been said somewhere that it's slightly smaller than an EV3. -

You also have the 42099. It's not the same thing, but it's cheaper and also has PUp. Let's hope so! I'd hate to see 2017's "fifty shades of blue" all over again... -

I don't believe a mastodon like the Liebherr would survive on PUp M motors alone, it surely requires a more powerful version. As for the servo, the current Boost one or a new one equivalent to the current PF servo are both as likely to me. Personally, I hope it's the Boost servo, as it's more versatile (can act both as a servo and as a normal motor). -

That's possible, but if the 42100 has two hubs (each with 4 ports) and 7 motors, it's also possible that one of the first hub's outputs is used to connect to an input on the second hub, thereby daisy-chaining them. This way, a single "Master" hub would receive commands from the app and relay them to the other "Slave" hub(s). -

Actually, most are NiMH. LiIon and LiPo, whose voltages (3.7 V) differ greatly from NiMH (1.2 V) and alcaline (1.5 V), need an embedded conversion circuit to be used as drop-in replacements. So, we'd need six of these "LiIon AAs" on a ~9V device (like the majority in LEGO) instead of just two of that new standard. Yes I know, there are cylindrical, AA-like, 3.7V LiIon batteries available, but, as far as I know, outside of flashlights they're not standardised. -

Personally I prefer it that way: AA batteries are easy to replace once worn out. For example, if the 4.5V trains or the first Control Centre used proprietary batteries, nowadays it'd be extremely hard to make them work. On the other hand, nowadays it's almost inexcusable that the industry hasn't come up with a standardised lithium rechargeable battery to replace AAs and their friends. -

Would it be more similar to the 8081, then? -

Yes, I deeply believe Technic sets won't use the PUp hub currently present on the trains and the Batmobile, but instead something with odd (as in the opposite of even, not as in "weird") dimensions, pin-based mounting instead of stud-based, powered by AA batteries, and hopefully with more outputs. What I'm complaining about is the myriad of names. Power Functions is nice in that it encompasses a lot of things, whereas now we're getting a lot of names to label the same system. -

Almost surely it has the same protocol, with the same plugs, and (at least some of) the same motors, but with a different name. Another name to add to WeDo 2.0, Boost and Powered Up. -

8859, in 1981. -
It might be possible to do something similar in nRF Connect for Android, although I can't test it right now (I'm at work and my hub is at home).

Isn't that overthinking? To me, the most likely scenario is that they opened a dictionary, picked a word at random to assign to the project, and took the rest of the day off. -

Why not? The current PUp hub is clearly targeted towards trains (pulling double-duty in the Creator-like Batmobile), so much that it has the exact same dimensions as the PF AAA battery box. And, just like the trains-oriented AAA PF box with studded connections and even dimensions has the equivalent Technic-oriented AA PF box with studless connections and odd dimensions, I fully believe we'll get an AA PUp hub to complement the existing AAA one. I just hope it has more outputs, if for no other reason than to try to gain back some market share from the likes of SBrick and BuWizz. -
Did you connect your hub to the official PUp app? The first time I did that with my Batmobile, the app updated the hub's firmware.

I don't mean driving the wave selector directly by the servo (which would indeed give the 3 positions, but you'd have to hold the remote's lever for two of them), but using the servo to actuate a stepper mechanism like the Chiron's shifter paddles. That would allow 4 outputs and you'd only need to touch the remote's lever to shift.
-
Since the 8043, there have been two major developments in Technic technology (besides the L motor): the servo and the wave selector. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Chiron-like gearbox with the paddles replaced by a servo and the wave selectors switching between functions instead of gear ratios. This would allow a single motor to power 4 functions; of course, such a mechanism would be huge, especially in the most interesting case of a servo controlling multiple motors and their respective gearboxes, but that's what huge Technic sets are for...

Why not? This one, for example, appeared in more than one set in its debut year. -
No, you won't damage any hardware: the worst that can happen is the hub's (current) software not recognising the motor/sensor.
-
I was wondering that myself. I didn't follow the traces, so I'm just spitballing here: could they be used to filter noise from any eventual motors connected to other ports? This shouldn't be an issue with LEDs, but I see no other explanation.
-
That could be solved by a different PF plug at the end of that adapter cable, with an electrical connection only at the top (like the PF extension cable without the 9V connection). The design of PF is smart in that regard, having power always flowing bottom to top in stacked PF plugs.

Nice! That gives me an idea for a contest: using only the parts from 42095, build a vehicle to participate in a series of events: drag racing, obstacle course, "truck" trial, etc.. Too bad that the set contains four 16T gears instead of, for example, two 12Ts and two 20Ts for more variety on gear ratios and capabilities. -
Actually, older 9V leads (those narrower and shinier) don't degrade: I have some pre-RCX touch sensors (the yellow ones with integrated lead) and they're fine. For some reason TLG changed the insulation material for something worse during the 9V era, but at least PF and NXT cables don't appear to be made from this brittle material.
-
If TLG could take inspiration from only one thing from these sets, personally I'd prefer the beams with holes in perpendicular directions.
