Heroica RPG - Quest #77: Your Elves are Better than Ours
Brickdoctor replied to Brickdoctor's topic in The Heroica Archive
You go to the side of the road and dig a hole looking somewhat like a grave. -
He PMed me about that first and I okay'd it, which is why his QM didn't yell at him. But if other players want what you're describing, it seems like Quest 77 is coming at just the right time. It's a lot like Quest 4.

Heroica RPG - Quest #77: Your Elves are Better than Ours

Ahvialyn raises both eyebrows almost imperceptibly, but Lord Normorn is unfazed by the dwarf's understanding of the diplomatic situation. "Correct, Master Dwarf." "The blue spots are wells. R'kilf was not a well-planned village. It sits on flat ground on the edge of the plains, not particularly defensible and lacking any other source of fresh water. The plants in the town were once a park, constructed in the area of the village where the wealthier merchants lived." Another elf approaches from the same direction you came, with footsteps so soft on the lush, elf-cultivated grass that you might not have noticed him if Lord Normorn did not suddenly look at him as he spoke. The other elf, clearly among the lesser ranks, spoke. "Herunya Normorn, manwanenye rocco an lenda." "Manë. Heroes, there are fresh horses ready for you. Go with my blessing." Riding through the night on seemingly tireless elven horses, you arrive outside R'kilf in mid-morning. Ahvialyn commands your horses to stop in the edge of a forest on the left side of road. Creeping through the brush towards the walls, you can see that the map was outdated: what should have been two tall towers forming a gatehouse was instead a seven stud-high windowless remnant of a skinny tower, guarding a single door, flanked by wooden barricades. The village is eerily quiet, save for a merchant plodding towards the gate dragging a wheeled cart behind him. "The damage doesn't look as bad from out here." "Figures. Gate closed, nobody in sight, reports of Pog activity in this area recently, have to go through in order to sell produce." As you watch from the trees, a team of armed Pongcanae vault over the wall and break into a sprint. The merchant drops the handles of the cart, scattering its contents, just before he is swiftly beheaded by one stroke of a Pongcanis blade. Ahvialyn holds out a hand, waving you back and instructing you not to take action. "You can't help him. Don't give away our presence." "Grrraooowww gruhhh... Search him." "..." *sniff* "Hurry it up. This area reeks of fleshies." You hear shouting in the distance, and the Pongcanae all look up to the west, into the forest about twenty studs closer to the city from where you're crouching. "RRRrrruurgh! Let's get out of here." "Wah shrf shrf shrf rrrooaarrgghh." Another Pongcanis bearing a staff approaches from your left. A Ruby set in the staff glows, and the raider lights a branch and sets fire to the wagon while his comrades grab what they can and hurry off towards the Eubric Plains with quick loping strides, leaving the merchant's body lying on the burning remnants of the cart. "The situation in R'kilf isn't looking good." -

"Cloaks of the Elven Spy. Very powerful, very rare. Lord Normorn decides who can have them now, and as a matter of fact, I do have one." -
My theory is that it's because the newer Advanced Class heroes have now seen where the older ones ended up if they stuck to one class until Level 30. I mean, if I were to go back in time to when I was Level 14.5 and do it all over again, I wouldn't apply Mythril to an SP: 5 shield (Even though SP: 15 seemed unthinkable at the time.), I wouldn't upgrade my Briar Bow at all, I wouldn't buy Potions to save myself from Aura, and most of all, I would've gone Assassin for a quest or two to pick up a few thousand Gold before going to Warden until Level 50. As it is, it's too late for that. (Luckily for me, I got the Mythril cheaply enough that I've still saved Gold despite the inefficient and tedious upgrade process for a non-Rogue.)The players outside of the original twenty or so Advanced Classes now have an idea of where you end up stat-wise for the different paths through Levels 15-30, and they now know how overpowering Rogues can be at high WPs with lots of consumables.

"My training is indeed Roguish, and although I have much experience, I have chosen not to pursue any other skills." "The elves in R'kilf are Brobric Elves, too. We all wear the same sort of armor." -
swils should definitely take the gold dragon. (Assuming the dragons are the same color as the egg -- it might be a wiser choice to pick the plain brown goblet.) He can use it with his armor to blind enemies from above.

I get the feeling that DLL is going to point out that newts are amphibians.

Solution: Docken might know that stuff and he might not, and I might know that stuff and I might not, and it all matches up and makes sense.

"I am not aware of the limits of Heroica's influence and power. However, I deem this mission critical to our ability to establish good relations with other factions, and as I understand it, R'kilf and Uland in general have no one power or law. The right to determine control of anything depends largely on your economic and military abilities and resources. You are of course hired heroes acting in the name of the Brobric Elves, so even if the long term effects of this quest do not go according to my plan and if the other powers do not agree with your ultimate decision, you have nothing to worry about." -

QM Note: My apologies; I'm having internet service problems and I'm also going to be out of town from the 25th to the 28th. Activity will probably be irregular until the 30th. -
OoC: I'm having internet service problems and I'm also going to be out of town from the 25th to the 28th. Activity will probably be irregular until the 30th. Apologies if you didn't want to use consumables, JimB. I'll give you some of mine later if you want me to. Hybros uses a Health Core before trying to use his Certificate for a Cloak of the Red Assassin on Avery from the Back Row. OoC: I have no idea how the Certificate is supposed to work, but I assume that you'll make us try it to find out. I use a Grand Potion and then attack Clippard from the Back Row with my Darksteel Crossbow.

Woah. That might be one of the worst typos I've committed during my time on EB. It's supposed to be 'resistance'. I got it right in the rest of the sentence. Must've heard the word or something while I was typing and didn't notice it.

"Lord Davril was killed at Bric'Bay, which means he was not left in R'kilf. So it is probably Lady Calaryl who is in command at R'kilf." "We stick together at least until we see the situation at the main gate." -

"Lord Keveak and Lord Ricroar sought to prevent the Lion Knights from settling on Uland, another human faction coming to what was once the land of the elves. Both are now dead, but Lord Keveak left a garrison in R'kilf, not large enough to maintain control, not small enough to be dispersed. They are the cause of the disorder that you have been hired to put right. I am unsure of what you mean by 'resistance' -- I'm sure the elves will resist your efforts if you work against them, and I have no knowledge of any resistance efforts by the citizens." -
I'm fairly certain that they were originally $10, actually, back when they had the magnets in the legs and torso and came in the plastic boxes. But the price increase is to be expected.

"Very little. Perhaps...fifty or so citizens and merchants who were too poor to leave, plus whatever other factions happen to be in the village, which is very unpredictable." "That is a large part of the problem: other than the remaining elves, we know very little of what the various factions are, how well-equipped they are, and what their purposes are." "Lord Keveak was my chief rival under Lord Ricroar, and that rivalry extended down to between his warriors and my spies. They will not answer to me -- if they did, we could have done this ourselves." "As far as I know, they are in ruins." -

Mounting your horses, you follow the elf along the winding road through the forest. Whether because of the speed of the elven horses or because of some unknown elven magic, the trip is quick and uneventful. You arrive in Brobric as night has fallen. "Alla Herunya Normorn!" "Welcome to Brobric, heroes of Heroica. As I said in my pitch that was posted in your Hall, Lord Keveak's leaving a garrison in R'kilf has resulted in fighting between multiple groups trying to take control of the city. We'd like to show the other powers on Uland that we're trying to make amends for the actions of Lord Ricroar and Lord Keveak, and we want to help restore order in R'kilf. Unfortunately, we don't have enough warriors to do that ourselves. "We know that groups have been taking advantage of the city's weakness, so we'd like you to go into R'kilf, observe what the different groups are doing, decide which group's control would best benefit the city's future, and help that group establish control of the city. You're free to start up your own faction or attempt to merge two factions together, if you believe that that's the best solution. I'm willing to trust your judgment in making the final decision, but if you need assistance, I will be sending Ahvialyn with you. "I have here a map of R'kilf:" "R'kilf sprung up out of camping grounds where traders would stop for the night at the junction of the three roads leading to Ve'er, Eubric and Mopag. Eventually, a group of men decided to establish a city there, constructing buildings that they could sell or rent out to other traders. They built a keep, started to build some walls and raised numerous shops along the main road from Eubric. "Lord Keveak's occupation ended their lofty hopes of a thriving city in a key location under their control. As you can see, the northern wall remains unfinished, and work never even began on the southwestern walls. Attacks by raiders destroyed the eastern wall which is now nothing more than a line of stakes in the ground, and all the wealthy merchants who owned shops and villas in that area of the city now stay away from R'kilf. "We in Brobric will be observing the situation in R'kilf as best we can, and when you return, we will decide the amount of your reward based on the impact of your decisions, guaranteed to be at least 100 Gold. Do you have any questions, or are you ready to leave?" -

I use my Eye of the Beholder Amulet. (Back Row, if it makes a difference.) OoC: Description only says that we get to reroll, so I assume that I don't specify new actions for the redone Round.
