Captain? That was two ranks ago for me being a Colonel. :-P

Yes length should include the bowsprit and yes Piracy is a purpose but true piracy means there is no nationality because otherwise you're a privateer. So c'mon boys, get out your rulers and start giving us measurements of your ships as well as all the other details.

Hmm... Existing threads and popular ones as well as relevant. That's tricky... I think the thread on What's your story? could be good as new members would tell how they came to love Pirate lego and thus why they are here... It's the sort of thread that lends itself to newbies but I realise it's not one of huge discussion. One of the threads showing a bit of rivalry between the fractions like Pirates vs. Islanders or the poll on what people consider themselves as if people come in as old fans of pirate lego they will have a prefference and make want to make themselves an introduction that way. That bit of tongue-in-cheek rivalry we have around here between reds and blues and pirates etc might get them interested in showing their persona and getting active in here... A little like how Green Hair came in, made it clear he was a Dutch pirate and emphasized his character through his creations from word go... Most of us have been like that. If we're talking about 5 newer/newish threads then Ka-Boom is probably on the right track... a thread on building techniques etc could invite creativity and thus more interaction from visitors.

People are pretty lazy on the whole, the simple fact is if they want their ships listed they must provide the information in here, asking us to go roaming through the archives is too much and this way we will be comparing known ships - i.e. the builders are known to us as members here and it's not just some ship on brickself somewhere. It's up to Phessy but I recon it's not worth displaying such a table on classic-pirates.com until we have atleast 10 ships listed.
-
I don't have excel or any other program, very limited here. I only used Paint to illustrate the general idea, kinda hoped you'd work the technical angle considering you wanted it to be part of classic-pirates. At any rate, people can just add the data here.

Okay guys I went and put my foot in it again by saying it would be nice to compare the HMS Leopard by Capt. K to other ships built by members. Mr. Phes suggested that such a table to compare the ships would be an interesting feature on the www.classic-pirates.com site, rather than as a thread. However we need to get a feel for how this should look and get information off people about their ships. Please look at this temporary 'dummy' table to get an idea of what I'm talking about: Now there are a lot of questions but let's take it a step at a time. Obviously some of your ships have been build and dismantled so you won't have the measurements anymore, in this case I would say we'll just leave that part blank. Obviously no ships will be added that don't have listed photos and we also don't want to start an arms race by people continually upgrading their ship to be bigger or stronger than someone else's so this table is only for ships that are finally complete and the date the ship is listed should be added. Now, the information we'd need from everyone even if they've already supplied it is the following: 1. What is the name of your ship? 2. What is the type of your ship? Eg. Sloop, Frigate etc. 3. What is the nationality/fraction of your ship? Eg. Spanish, Pirate, Dutch, 'Imperial Guards' etc? 4. What is the purpose of your ship? Eg. Exploration, Trade, Warfare 5. What are the measurements of your ship? Height, width, length in centimeters. 6. What is the name of your Captain if not you? 7. What is your name? (Ship's Builder) Eg. Capt. K 8. How many cannons does your ship have? 9. What is the number of the crew? 10. (Optional) What is your ships home port? Please add the url code to the information you add so Mr Phes can sort out the images. This isn't a confirmed action just an idea so let's hear what everyone thinks and if it's worth doing.

Indiana Jones flags for your creations!
Col. Whipstick replied to Col. Whipstick's topic in LEGO Licensed
These weren't really designed to go on fabric, rather on the hard white plastic pirate flags used in official Pirate Lego sets. You print the design out onto stickers and then place them onto those pieces. -
I've always wondered what a Conquistador is doing downunder :-D I'm assuming that while trying to round the Cape Horn you got blown just a wee bit off course, landed up in Sydney Harbour, mistook the Opera Houses for the pyramids of the Aztecs, went off into the Outback to find El Dorado and ended up finding a 'beeahr' in a dusty bar in Alice Springs. X-D It was time I made these maps and broke the bad news to you about where Mexico is... Remember, it's the first right after Florida next time. :-P

*burning scent emits from under the Colonel's bicorne* You should know by now all this 21st-centuryness techno-gobledeegook does my head in Mr. Phes. I only had a sort of passing thought that it would be interesting to create a table of comparison. I see what you mean it could be nice as a fleet listing at classic-pirates.com. I guess the table should read like a shipyard's ledger. The first column listing the names of the ships that have been created and those names themselves be a url to threads where the ship has primarily featured or for that matter to the pages concerning said ship in the MOC database. A thumbnail of the actual ship would be nice to join the name below. The second column show the names of the shipbuilder or captain... these may be different if the creator wanted them to be. A third colomn suggesting the nationality of the vessel and or it's purpose - military/merchant/pirate etc. In this colomn it would be nice to show a flag or icon to tie together with the flags I guess. Then colomns for No. of Crew, No. of Cannons, Ship's structural dimensions - actual centimetres in model length, breadth, height. Let me dwell on it for a bit while this caffeine sinks in and I'll mail you some kind of a dummy illustration of the idea. We could all think of it for a bit. I suppose we should only make a comparison table for fortresses as well but there one should draw the line, I don't want to go down the road of comparing armies etc. Sorry for going off topic folks! :-$

Ole! As promised here is the first set of European Imperial maps to complement the flags. Now obviously trying to map territories acurately is nigh impossible, especially on so small a scale so I don't want to hear moaning and groaning about how some minor area is coloured wrong unless it is a substantial inaccuracy. Also because the Spanish Empire spans around four centuries and there are a number of changes I've simply taken a rough layout of the Spanish Empire in it's early days which is symbolised by the flag which is the Cross of Burgundy, amoung the Spanish flags I've done previously. The later day Empire, very radically reduced is symbolised by the more contemporary flag of Spain. These flags aren't intended to be highly educational but they do show realistically how large the Spanish Empire was and how swiftly it deteriorated. Stay tuned for the Portuguese coming to an EB Pirate forum near you soon! X-D The Spanish Empire

For a start... Welcome to the forum Corsair! :-) She does indeed resemble the Carribean Clipper on steroids, or an imperial version of the BSB but for me your cabin is a marked improvement. It's nice to see a bed, a decent sized desk with a map etc. The tight colour-coding of the Golden Falcon is inspirational as is the name which in itself sounds like a pumped up version of the Sea Hawk (The Clipper). I'd love to see a story where the Clipper gets heavily damaged in a battle and then goes into the shipyards to re-emerge as the Golden Falcon. All in all a great ship and a great way to make an enterance to the forum. *y*

I don't think there's much I can say that hasn't already been said by Bonaparte... Fantastic job Captain K! Can't wait to see the Leopard against a scenic background which I'm sure you'll be looking to do already. At 52 cannons I'm glad she's an HMS and on my side, somehow I doubt 'duck and cover' would help much for those who go up against her. X-D So many fantastic ships here... it makes me think we should have a ranking table of the names of the MOC ships, the names of their captains, nationality, number of crew, number of cannons etc. We could call it the EB fleet listing. I'll have a look at our ship MOC database and see if I can come up with a comparison table. At any rate the Leopard looks a mighty challenge for the Denise or the L'Orient for example.
-
I hope you don't take any of that nonsense to heart Captain K... Banned and rightly so. *sad*
-
*sweet* Yep, I've said as much earlier in the thread. Just keep popping in, they will come sometime soon.
-
Whoops, a bit late replying... Those are cool, very proportionate. Perhaps sticking to borders in red is better on this scale, could you revisit the British Isles to do the same? This is why it's worth us both doing them, the maps are in a different direction. *y*
-
Agreed. I can't see why you don't use Mosana's template for your own designs, if that's what you're trying to do.
-
It's supposed to be around 1.5 cm/15 mm on each side... 2.2 cm/22 mm at maximum diameter but given MSPaint was designed by Microsoft and Americans don't know what the hell a millimetre or centimetre looks like their version of 1.5 cm doesn't come out anything like the 1.5 cm in the Metric measurement world. :-D I'm curious to see as I'm able to print these myself but I feel they may look too pixelated until either myself or someone else gets around to formatting the pixels on the maps and flags.
-
Well not much to say Dreamweb, except I'm looking forward to reading some more. I'd be lost without MSPaint and it can be pushed creatively to come up with a lot so it will be cool to see how you integrate it into the comic. Don't rush it, we'll just see it all as it comes.
-
Back then? You mean in the days of Yorr? X-D Yes I remember last weekend, back when we used to have square wheels and ate all our meat raw. It would be much appreciated if you could sort out the flags for me Mr Phes as I won't have a PC capable of running Illustrator and other applications for some time yet.
-
The HMS has cushioned seats! Who said Nelson gets to have such luxury over me?! :-( It's good to look at an actual cabin though because what little we saw in the way of lego ship cabins was very spartan.
-
Thanks Mr Phes! The new format of the classic-pirates.com page is looking really good, really captures the lego feeling. Do you think it's worth running these maps through Illustrator to smooth the pixelations we see or would it just make the maps all blurry because we're using such a small scale. I think the size of the maps may be a good reason why they aren't so popular, larger ones would be able to show more detail. Then again most people's MOC's are very generic and because they aren't trying to highlight a specific place, time or group most of this customised stuff is a bit of a waste. :-/
-
Already suggested it to him for the cabin.
-
Haven't gone any further than the idea, will see what the demand is like, these maps don't seem very popular as an idea.
-
Probably a self punt here but what about some of the new maps I've just completed on the desk or wall of the cabin. Would also be cool to see two swords crossing each other, though I'm not sure how easy that would be to design.

Okay guys, despite the poor reception initially I've gone ahead with completing the first batch of minifig maps. These are a simple variation on the traditional lego pirate map seen in so many sets. I have chosen 12 different territories and provided 4 options for each so choose what you fancy. Of the 12 regions it was extremely difficult to render maps into so small an area with a program like MSPaint and still have the image clear so obviously artistic license has been used. I've tried to highlight colonial areas in particular and regions heavily affected by our era. 'Western Hempishere' and 'Eastern Hemisphere' have been designed that you can put these together for a map of the world. I may in time consider options for making larger maps that join together but for now let me take care of these first. These are just the standard maps however I will now get to work on colour coded versions of these to highlight colonial territory of Specific nationalities etc so stay tuned for Spanish territory - coming soon!
