Okay guys, this is just a bit of an experiment... Inspired by the 2x2 lego pirate treasure map that used to be found in numerous sets, in my quest for greater customization I'm looking into producing some different maps. This image is just a tester/teaser to see what opinion and demand would be like. Instead of taking the fictional 'Terra Incognita' of the official pirate map I've just rendered a map of the 'Northern Caribbean' and done two versions. One an old sepia styled map and the other in colours compatable to what lego have done. Additionally I've tried to add little features to the map as lego did but I'm unsure yet of how these look and what may be changed in the way of compasses, sea monsters, anchors, ships, whales etc. Then I've looked at making these maps have some relevance and have created two versions showing Spanish and English colonial territory around the Golden Age. So have a look guys, print them out and see if they work. What do you think of the different colours etc? Won't go into production yet until I can see if it's worth it.

That link doesn't seem to be working for me, but I know what you're showing. Peeron did have scans of the old official lego pirate children's books. There were 4 books and they were published by Ladybird.

Indiana Jones flags for your creations!
Col. Whipstick replied to Col. Whipstick's topic in LEGO Licensed
Of course Lego did the right thing by not putting flags on their stuff, note the Imperial flags with pirates are strictly generic. I was never suggesting Lego should have on the official sets. These guys don't seem to understand that we are adults in here - or atleast some of us! And in the end their protests are hypocritical because there's cause and reason to censor absolutely everything so it's really simple from my standpoint - all the flags stay or all of them go. I'm not removing the Swastika unless I remove everything I've done because that's the reality of history. I am quite honestly pretty ticked-off about this. I come here to escape the liberal insanity of the world out there and for me lego will always be an excellent way to explore, educate and model history. What's so ridiculous is one could do an MOC of a gay parade which is not acceptable to everyone but it wouldn't get any protest because it's on the good side of the politically correct line whereas the nazis aren't. It's just the usual exhausting close-minded, dogmatic superiority of liberal culture everywhere and once again they seem to feel they have the moral monopoly even here. And what further adds to my irritation is that most people couldn't really care about what flags are there, only a few might be genuinely offended, the others are just trying to score points as usual in this world. I couldn't just post those flags and that be it, someone had to try make a statement and hope to get himself some guaranteed pats on the back by choosing an arguement where he knows the majority is with him. Perhaps that's why I'm a Colonel here and not a President, I don't need the popularity vote. -

Well I don't agree. These flags are here to complement the Indiana Jones experience and incase you didn't notice those weren't Vikings he was competing with in the films. Besides others generated the idea for these flags aside from me. History is history, if you can't deal with it, stick with duplo. The films showed the swastika. Furthermore there has been no criticism of any other flag and yet there is for this one, that much I can understand but throughout history every person has course and reason to feel negative about say the USSR, the British Empire, Napolean - the United States! It is particularly typical that there is no criticism whatsoever of the Soviet Flag, a regime in my eyes with effects more so devastating than that of the Nazi's if you want to play that card, yet because we were allied with them Joseph Stalin seems to have been considered Walt Disney. So as a lengthy student of history I'm sorry but I don't place particular negative influence given political viewpoints are entirely relative to those that see them and the creation of these flags is in no way an endorsement of any political or religious idealogy. If I really wanted to I could choose to find certain subject matter offense, which indeed I do but I'm big enough to recognise history belongs to no one. I don't think you are looking at this in a mature enough perspective. You can't and shouldn't be trying to shelter and contain history in any capacity. Besides as Indiana Jones is himself the protagonist and the Nazi's and Soviets are his opposition that would only further validate they are the token 'bad guys' in the same way the pirates are to the soldiers and the various castle groups are to each other. Frankly if you want to go down this road then you might as well pull the pirate line for it's colonial implications and the fact that pirates, like the vikings had an undisputed history as violent marauders, pull the western theme for it's political incorrectness against native Americans and in short you'd have nothing left but basic bricks. So now you've all got your 21st century, I want to be seen against this statements may we please get on with it. This is the last time I will comment on this subject, I've tried hard to cut down on any political agendas in any thread I come across. I make what I make to enrich the historical experience for those who want it and I'm not going to stop that for those of you who seriously need to take a pill. No one is forcing you to print out and use the flag but have a thought for those who may wish to. Right, that little bit of left-wing extremism dealt with I've got more important things to do, such as get on with more flags. Gee, what can I find that will be totally unoffensive? Anyone got any problems with ancient Egypt because that's how far I'd have to go back. -
Personalised/Customised Flags of Members

Here you go Hairy. Right folks, I'm retiring from the personalised flag business for a little bit, atleast for to get a few other things done and until I start seeing these flags in use there's little reason to continue making more and more. -
I absolutely loved this MOC. *wub* It's my favourite of everything you've done despite what a tragedy this was in British military history and here's why: 1. I think the paintings were beginning to limit your originality Tiny Pies because you were always limited to the scene involved and the perfect torsos and pieces etc. This way you can take incidents in history and have much greater free will with what's available to present the scene. 2. The smoke as ever is a winner, especially with the red bush, though from your narration was this Sir Nadroj's idea first? 3. I'm always pushing to see historical representation, hence my work on the flags and it's great to see people using those torsos and trying as best as one can to replicated authentically. Your Russian artillery officer in particular is a very nice touch as by this stage we can start to expect changes in dress, hats and weaponry - the Crimean War was at the very end of what I consider the Napoleanic era, the industrial war era was dawning at the later half of the 19th century which is seen in aspects of the American Civil War for example. Can I suggest that you do a few more scenes from the Crimean War before you have to break up and use those pieces elsewhere. I'd love to see interpretations of specific wars, colonies, battles etc and there really isn't enough of that on this site.

Very cool... It's smart thinking to try sell something like this while POTC is still well known but at the same time it's a shame to lose such an MOC. So long as we have preserved photos. Did ou know there are personalized POTC faces and torsos available in the library that could have complemented your model, perhaps next time add those and it would sell for more.

Well I see Phred's point, there are British East India Company flags which I've done but need to post, one can always say these are extra Dutch and British flags or it's a new category - one for trading companies. If I had some idea of some other companies' flags then it would be worth having a new category.

You've lost me there Imperial Scouts, I know exactly what you mean by the vertical banner but in the end the flags are designed to a certain size to go on a certain piece, how or in what way would you intend to have the vertical banner shown? Otherwise the design would end up just being printed loosely on cloth or something. -

Just the flag, because the white flag with the blue cross is the flag of Nova Scotia (New Scotland) given it's the reverse colours of the St. Andrew's flag... Or do you want that flag with the black background and cyrillic text too? The thing here is it begs the question of not having a proper Russian imperial flag, along with a Prussian, Austrian etc. -

Er... you mean on the 2x2 flag? i.e. - down the way the hatches hang down over the cannons? I'm trying to work out what piece or method you'd want to use for it's display? -

I should also mention that whilst the images suffer from pixelation given I was working with MSPaint there are programs that are able to smooth the image pixels out. Apparently Adobe has a programme called Illustrator and it's free to download the trial version. Mr Phes gave me this information when I worked on the flags in the pirate forum. -
A Guide to the Pirates Minifigures - Part II - The Soldiers
Col. Whipstick replied to TalonCard's topic in LEGO Pirates
A jolly damned good read wot wot! That was far more entertaining than the Gazette lying in the officer's dorm on the pirates. :-P I always remember how wonderful the soldiers looked when I first saw them, they were so obviously the good guys and in all the time I played with pirates and soldiers as a child I always favoured the later. -
Phred is probably going to hit me with one of his plungers for this but here are yet more flags... I have only seen the VOC flag presented on what I call the Newer flag of the Netherlands however I have also created a version on The Prince's Flag (that very orange one). The reason for this is because the Dutch East India Company dates back to the time and use of the Prince's Flag and thus I wonder if this version could have existed... At any rate there you go Mr Tiber, better late than never.

Has Indiana Jones made ancient history of Johnny Thunder?
Col. Whipstick replied to Col. Whipstick's topic in LEGO Licensed
Holy blue monkey bubblegum frosting... Didn't expect this sort of response on the argument but I'm thrilled to see it because much as I've always been a big Indy fan it saddens me to think of Johnny disappearing into one of those Egyptian Pharoah thombs and I'm glad I'm not alone in this sentiment. :-) -
Hi Theatre-folk Some may know, some may not that I've been doing a large number of flags for the pirate forum but as and when I can I've been doing a few extra flags here and there and very often the flags can be used in any forum. Indy 565 requested a personalized Indy flag and I've done as much but thought it would be useful to render the Nazi and Soviet flags for use with the new Indy sets and the MOC's that are bound to arise. Hope you find these flags useful and enjoyable. This could lead to some interesting WWII MOC's, when added to the British and American flags etc.

Indy 565 requested a unique Indiana Jones flag. I've done this but obviously it's really not for the pirate forum, nontheless I shall display this here along with the Nazi and Soviet flags which I have designed to complete the set of 'Indy flags'. This will all be properly posted in a thread of their own in the Lego Theatre forum. Indy I tried as best I could to offer what you wanted but it proved tricky and soon looked too cluttered and not really clear enough, so I hope you are happy with the IJ and bullship beneath. -
Question - anyone got a advice for improving my ship?
Col. Whipstick replied to Admiral's topic in Pirate MOCs
The decks should still prove stable enough provided you have a smooth shelf finish at the end upon which the decks will 'open'. That will ensure the deck pieces will be secure when they are down. It's going to be a lot of work, that much I can say for certain. -
So Aus printed their own catalogues? I have a feeling SA didn't, that it was all completely imported from Britain though I can't be sure. Anyway, back to the subject at hand... Harbour Sentry/Bomber Brigadier makes a very neat addition to Eldorado as does the Soldiers boat from Rock Island Refuge/Port Jamaica.

Question - anyone got a advice for improving my ship?
Col. Whipstick replied to Admiral's topic in Pirate MOCs
Admiral, I've read your question a few times to try get it right in my head. I don't think there is much you can do at all... If you want a deck over your cannon and you want to be able to access the cannon the deck is going to have to move one way or another - there's no getting around physics. My only recommendation would be to build the deck in such a way where maybe it can fold up for accessing the cannons. There are those hinge pieces in lego that would allow you to move the deck 45 degrees. Placing those towards the centre of the hull would allow the decks to fold back towards the centre of the ship and your fingers would thus be able to reach the cannons. Perhaps someone with a little more MOC experience can suggest something else.
