Prices in the US vs. Europe

There´s been a lot of questions about the different prices of LEGO around the world.
Here is an answer from Mads Nipper from TLG Corporate Management concerning the prices in the US compared to Europe:
Our selling costs in Europe and Asia are higher than in the US because of the size of US market and retailers (economies of scale). Furthermore, the US market is by far the most price competitive in the world. These factors combined mean that we have for years priced our products higher in eg Europe than the US. In recent years, the difference has been increased due to the weakening US dollar - but we have consciously decided not to let this (hopefully short term) weakening of the dollar hurt the US consumer. And in order to stay profitable as a company, we cannot decrease our European prices - especially seen in the light of increasing cost pressure on oil, labor etc. Finally, final pricing in the market place is obviously determined by retailers, which is something we cannot and will not influence.

The Death Star 10188 S@H price rise

Hi all!
As it been discussed in a couple of threads I´d like to post the latest information I have in this matter.
So far this information by Steve Witt has been posted here on EB:
"I checked into this today (7/7 - my remark) and reality is that they just listed the prices wrong initially. it wasn't meant to be a promotion, it was just a mistake. They now have the prices where they were supposed to be from the beginning. The reasons for the differences across borders are the same as they always are in that the cost of business in every country is drastically different from one another."
"They (TLG S@H - my remark) let me know that they would still honor any order made at the lower price and asked my advice on how to communicate it. I asked them to send a mail to all those who would retain the original price as they didn't deserve stress over our mistake. otherwise we're simply caught between a rock and a hard place."
Here´s some more information from Steve:
"the thing is this set was originally targeted for the price that got listed, then a mess load of stuff got added to it because of things Lucasfilm wanted and the price just kept climbing."
"it all came down to minifigures if I understand correctly. which is part of what makes is so cool, but minifigures are also very expensive to produce. It should be noted that Lucasfilm's only desire was to make this an awesome set, and them being this invested in something like this is actually very cool."
