  5. "Log date 316, This is Dr. Danielle Long, recording from the surface of planet H05, or Livgorn. My Sc106 probe drone and I successfully landed at 1200 hours Farmolis time... which translates to roughly mid-morning here, although the days are faster. Sc106 and I are scouting the immediate vicinity of my landing point for signs of hostile life and to collect samples. Supposedly there are deposits of Awesomnium beneath the ground not too far from here. I will look into this. First observation: This place reeks of urine. Likely this is due to abnormally high concentrations of urea in the atmosphere. I suspect this has to do with the wildlife. To confirm my suspicions, I have tasked Sc106 with the collection of multiple samples of the native "Flora" and "Fauna." The air is breathable. I imagine that means these "xeno-plants" are conventionally photosynthetic. I cannot wait to perform experiments on these xenobiological organisms in my lab... and get out of this fetid fen. Second observation: I should have worn a heavier jacket. It's positively frigid, and I'm currently within the tropical zone. Status update complete. Dr. Long, signing off." //Survey// //Specimen Acquisition// ~Dr. Long

I am accompanying one of my Drones as it collects samples, and making observations on the natural growth habits of the local xeno-flora. Air is breathable, Temperature is a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius at night at my current location, and the stars are readily visible. In-fact, I believe I can see the O.C.S. Axle from where I am.... This planet will make a fine resort-world for Octan's retirees. Naturally, specimens must be taken to scan for harmful bio-organisms and viruses, the analysis of which will take place in the pristine labs aboard the O.C.S. Axle. Dr. Long signing off."// Science by the light of the stars //"This is Dr. Long, aboard personal shuttle O.C.S. Cog 1, entering Space Dock 1 of O.C.S. Axle. Prepare decontamination shower for myself and my pilot. Aboard craft are 6 Sc106 Drones filled with xenobiological specimens. Follow typical extraction protocol for low-threat xenobiological contaminants. primary containment and threat assessment in high-risk section of Axle, followed by distribution to low-threat labs as deemed appropriate. Arrival time in approximately 10 minutes. Make that chemical shower warm, and prepare my usual soap cocktail. Dr. Long signing off."// Decontamination Note: This piece was meant to convey a sense of loneliness and cold removedness, and the red chemical shower itself is meant to be rather off-putting. All-in-all I wanted to evoke Fan-Disservice, and not the more ubiquitous opposite of that trope. The build was actually quite a bit more difficult than the pictures may imply, but it was built specifically for this one shot, so the technique I used to create the octagon that comprises the shower goes completely unnoticed. hope you enjoy! But not too much. ~Insectoid Aristocrat
  7. Note: I did not finish my original intended project for this week, but I did finish this, which was actually the relevant-to-this-week-story part anyways. Planet: E02 Tags: Land vehicle, Science Excerpt from Clappie Explorer's Guide: "The Lesser Lesser Drigonian Mani-colour Xenoscorpion (Soccerkiddus manticolourus) builds small mounds in the Arid desert, from which they perch to capture the morning dew on their backs, which they then transfer with their delicate front arms into a lime-green pod on their backs. They are a very common inhabitant of the Lesser Drigo dessert." "They are very small, but when crushed release a trans-neon green juice, which can stain clothes if left unattended. Launder using sodium hypochlorite bleach." Reclaiming Lesser Drigo _____________________________________________ Science Officer Ben Nai: "Good morning Dr. Long! Right on schedule, as usual!" Dr. Long: "This is not a good morning Dr. Nai. Not a good morning at all. I am here to clean up your messes." Ben Nai: "Of course, Dr. Long." Dr. Long: "I have been briefed as to the specifics already...." Ben Nai: "Shall I show yo uto your Offi--" Dr. Long: "...Don't Interrupt me. We've found dozens of MANTIS produced micro-tracking devices in water filtered here, And suddenly they all activated, likely revealing the location of all our most important water extraction facilities; Several loading robots are unaccounted for; Several water filtration pipes have been physically removed and stolen; And, to top it all off, our Top Secret Project OMEGA was infiltrated by a MANTIS spy, who proceeded to transfer--unimpeded--an entire Data chip on the beryllium sphere before he was apprehended." Ben Nai: "Now, we don't know how successful his data transfer was ye--" Dr. Long: "Did I say you could speak? No I did not. The only salvageable aspect of this towering monument to your incompetence is that we did capture one of the MANTIS agents responsible." Ben Nai: "I was just about to get to that! Bring him in!" "There he is, Danielle: The mastermind behind this entire MANTIS operation! We'll get him to crack, for sure! Intel indicates his name is 'Scorpio'! Intimidating name if you ask me!" Dr. Long: "Why is he still wearing a communications device on his head?" Dr. Nai: "Umm..." Dr. Long: "The Peacekeepers will see to his safe transferal, and hopefully wipe that smug grin off his face. Show me to my office, Dr. I will be sure to tell the board about all of this during your annual review. Needless to say, you should make sure you're on good terms with the janitorial staff of your facility." "I'm surrounded by idiots." ________ Later.... //"Log date 369, This is Dr. Danielle Long recording from Lab facilities in Octan's new science base on Lesser Drigo. Earlier I received a very promising geological sample obtained by one of our up and coming pilots on E02. I believe it is, in-fact, Mithril. Its appearance on E02 is highly irregular, as our scans suggest that the planet could not possibly have produced it naturally. This, in addition to findings from the Axle's Alien Artifact retrieval squad (called in by explorer Lu caslaug-Hing) on E02, leads me to believe that Freegate, the only location in the Andromeda Gates network known to possess Mithril deposits, may, at some distant time in the past, have been mined for its resources by non-human sentients. Further research on my theory may be conducted should I get a chance to visit Freegate. Now, onto less important matters. One of our exploration teams has procured a specimen of the local F02 fauna for me.... "Oh you have got to be kidding me." "Dr. Long signing off. I may need to visit another planet for a while to escape the boiling incompetence I am forced to endure."// _______________________________________ Ok, this was the first time I've ever attempted vertical rockwork like that! I was so inspired by Soccerkid's beautiful work that I felt compelled to try that for myself. Unfortunately I don't have many parts in the right colours! What you see in this build is most of my available dark tan, and even some of my unavailable dark tan. (don't tell my model-keeping brother... oh well... he already knows. ) and ALL of my nougat... to the point that I mixed with that earthy orange colour. I think it turned out pretty well, all things considered. I also bought a set specifically for the olive green. You are looking at literally my entire collection of olive green. 8. //"Log date 350, This is Dr. Long reporting from the O.C.S. Axle, in orbit F10. I have assigned one of my new Tech specialists; a fresh hire by the name of Kodan Black, to perform sub-surface analysis of water samples in a highly promising region of the planet. I needed him to adjust a few of our Aquatic science drones for the F10 missions. With such a massive planet, there is much work to be done... So many lifeforms to analyze and catalog and categorize... So many drones to be deployed to observe it all and quantify it. It's good to have an extra hand on deck... I just wish he would stop sniffing my hair... It's beginning to become a nuisance. Dr. Long signing off."// //"Status update. Shallow water drone observation is coming along well. I have dispatched a few of our high pressure sub drones (modified A30 models) to observe the deeper reaches of the planet. Initial reports indicate that this planet, much like earth, has active hydrothermal vents along the sea floor, which may be capable of sustaining life."// //"Status update. I finally got a chance to look at one of the relay screens from the A30 drones. Fascinating. Life always finds a way... even in the darkest depths of an alien sea, life, of some kind, still fights on for survival. I am, of course, referring to the myriad of xenobacterial specimens the drone is collecting from the vent. There is a fish-like alien, but that is much less important. Now... I need to attend the unveiling of a newly commissioned drydock on one of the Axle's dropships. Afterwords, I will relax in my office with the day's paperwork. Dr. Long signing off."// Sorry for the shit picture. I'll try to get better ones tomorrow, but I just needed to meet the deadline today. My second day on this miserable planet has been much more eventful than the first. After receiving a transmission from one of our Engineers, Big Z, as the crew calls him, I was able to devise a method by which a prospector on this planet might reliably discover Awesomnium without the use of our advanced detector technology. The key to finding sub-surface deposits of Awesomnium is a very distinctive "bush." Found planet-wide, this bush only grows in Awesomnium rich soil. I've gathered several specimens for research aboard the O.C.S. Axle, and tested the surrounding soil with Sc119, or as the crew calls it: Hound. I'll be returning to Orbit shortly. Dr. Long signing off."// Conclusions Drawn --------------------------- Later, aboard the O.C.S. Axle. "Greetings, Comrade." "Greetings, Danielle. Have you gotten a chance to look over my Science Outpost request? I've detected very promising readings from a sector on the Northern Pole of H05." "I did review your work. Excellent adherence to protocol. We did send out a scouting mission lead by Horsleben, and work is underway for a permanent mining facility to be installed... however your request is being denied." "Wait... but why? I'm fully capable of working planet-side on this." "I know you are... but we're needed elsewhere. The Axle always follows the primary fleet... and the fleet is moving out." "You mean...?" "Yes. Domination has been achieved. H05 is ours. Now we begin firming our control over the nearby planets." "So... Where does this leave me?" "We will be needing a lab on G07 to test the water there for potability, in addition to performing routine environmental studies. This will be your new assignment. Go over the plans with Big Z. He's disembarking from the Axle shortly. I'm sure you'll have much to discuss." "So, Octan's reach is extending. Excellent." "You know what they say: Kawashita thinks red is the color of domination, and MANTIS thinks green is. They're both right!" --------------------------- Later still, on G07: //"Log date 322, this is Dr. Danielle Long. Preliminary reports from Hennigan II show bountiful water resources, but inedible biomass. This will have to be researched. Samples collected. Etc. I have my drones working on that now. There are more pressing matters, however. One of our explorers has reported an... "Unknown Artifact..." which is Octan code for a really interesting anomaly... Potentially produced by highly intelligent non-human lifeforms. That's why we send the explorers out first. They have a knack for picking up on interesting finds. Some say it's fate, or luck, but I don't believe in any of that. 12. Note: I like Science in my Science Fiction. "How would you like to live in Looking-glass House, Kitty? I wonder if they'd give you milk in there? Perhaps Looking-glass milk isn't good to drink..." ~Lewis Carroll . //"this is Dr. Danielle Long, Requesting files related to the incident involving Captain Roan Oak's failed attempt to create an outpost on Donwarr."// **Access granted** **initializing summary of report** --Captain's Log: the date is Marzn 5, 3812. My crew and I experienced a rough landing on Donwarr. The crew is still alive, but a lot of our equipment has been damaged, including the Octan Hydroponic Vegitable Growth System. We tried fixing it with instructions from our CLAPPIE, but the damn thing keeps insisting we are trying to report an Unknown Artifact. Perhaps it was damaged in the landing as well. Fortunately, the radio still works, and we've called for help. Octan says they'll get here to extract us or at least fix the Hydroponics module in 8 to 10 business weeks. We have enough food stores to last 3 people a week. Thankfully initial probe readings detected this planet provides Biomass suitable for human consumption.-- --Captain's Log : the date is Marzn 6, 3812. We have discovered a clearing in the forest where we will place our communications module. The site is located in close proximity to a fruit bearing tree. Ensign Christi Huygans, always the adventurer, scanned it with our molecule analyzer and found that it contained glucose and amino acids, and lacked any obvious toxins. She ate it, and found it to be delicious. The fruits from this tree are so sweet and wonderful! They really fill the stomach! I have no doubt that this planet will be one of Octan's bread basket worlds.-- --Captain's Log: the date is Marzn 7, 3812. We all had the runs last night. Maybe eating Alien plants isn't the smartest idea. Ha. Well, we're sticking to the ship's food for now. Com Module has been moved into position. Hopefully Octan gets here with help soon. If worst comes to worst, we'll just have to put up with a little diarrhea for a few weeks before they get here with earth food. Shame, though, really. Those fruits were delicious. Perhaps we can catch some of the local game to eat.-- ** skipping ahead ** --Captain's Log: the date is Marzn 20. Supplimenting our diets with the local plant and animal life, we managed to stretch our food stores longer than anticipated... but now we're out. Good thing this planet is bountiful in both plants and animals to eat. The other day we caught a tripedal goat-like thing, and you know what? It tasted exactly like goat! And not that synthetic crap they serve in the Octan Cafeteria, I'm talking honest to goodness lamb meat. Mmmm. As far as places to get marooned on go, I'm glad we landed in this paradise. **skipping ahead** --Captain's Log: the date is Marzn 30. We've all lost a lot of weight and feel groggy. I can't tell why. We've all been eating plenty. The fruits hang low and are filled with sugar and nutrients. The animals are unaccustomed to us and do not run away, making them as easy to capture as the fruits and leafy greens (or reds as they so often are on this planet.) Ensign Huygans could not walk this morning. A bruise she suffered a week ago has yet to heal, and it looks infected. Ensign Burkhold has gotten paranoid. He won't stop talking about food, and he doesn't look too hot. Could we have caught an alien disease? I certainly hope our immune system can take care of it...-- **Skipping ahead** --Burkhold is missing. He was mumbling like "Food no good. Must survive." It was very worrying. And now he's gone. One of the many statues of him that adorn the streets of Farmolis Headquarters city, now. He was perhaps the most efficient CEO we've had on the Andromeda Branch, which I found quite admirable. I could fault the man for very few things. Perhaps he was a little soft-hearted on the Alien species with whom he made contact... but that line of thought brought the Merchant Confederation within our folds. Perhaps the only thing I could truly fault him for was his humility. At times he shouldered more of the logistical burdens of running Octan than the next three people put together... myself included. And for all his work he requested no thanks. Needed no other incentive than loyalty to our great company. A giant among men, was he... so perhaps he would have liked this statue. All tests showed negative. I had been drugged nightly with an amnesia inducing compound, and my drone had been hacked. End of story. The remainder of the investigation must take place outside a lab, if my captors are to be brought to justice. And to those ends I have enlisted the assistance of one of my most trusted, and loyal colleagues. I hope he can find those responsible... and ... perhaps even... dare I mention... the object I've seen... only in dreams of that place... the enclosed place... the hexagonal walls... the map. Pipe Dreams by Danny-Longlegs, on Flickr "And so every morning at exactly 7:00 am, I get my exercise in--Doctor's orders. I ride my bike on the maintenance access road of the South Grid Pipeline. It runs from Farmolis City (also known as Farmolis Headquarters City) to Texicana Station. In the early days, Farmolis Headquarters City performed all aspects of Awesomnium production: Extraction, Purification, and Shipping... but now Farmolis city has taken on a more Administrative role, and serves as the planet's port city, and center of Octan colonization in Andromeda. Texicana Station is the primary purification site, and so, this pipe channels a constant stream of pure, fuel-grade Awesomnium to Farmolis Headquarters' Shipping district. These access roads run the whole length, as does the canal of naturally occurring liquid Awesomnium... but I'm not riding nearly that far. Just as far as Kilometer Marker 17. At approximately 7:45 am, I arrive at this point and begin riding back... but not before I indulge my intellect a little." Pipe Dreams by Danny-Longlegs, on Flickr "Kilometer marker 17 is placed in the thick of Farmolis' s famous farming district. The densest packed, most nutritious, strongest, GM EthiCORN ™ is grown here. The fields stretch to the horizon, and are almost entirely regulated by machines, who conduct all the hydration, pesticide dispersal, harvesting, etc... it's deliciously efficient.... however, on my daily rides, I've noticed a local specimen of Xenobotanical nature that seems to have developed an immunity to Octan's pesticides... it is an interesting find; a novel xenobotanical specimen on the planet longest occupied by our force. Life finds a way, as they say." Pipe Dreams by Danny-Longlegs, on Flickr "I've been recording it's growth patterns. It grows swiftly, and seems to seek increased hight, as it has begun to wrap around the power pole beside the canal. I lack a Logbook, so I've devoted this data to a simple recording device I purchased in the interim. When I escape this sisyphean sabbatical, I will add this specimen to the Axle's databank. Then, perhaps we can devise a pesticide capable of exterminating it." Pipe Dreams by Danny-Longlegs, on Flickr "Soon. Soon I will be aboard my beloved Axle, and all these planets to which we've gained access will yield their rewards. Within our grasp, these worlds will be investigated and examined. We will catalog the soil components. Capture and tag the wildlife. Extract and analyze the flora. My body seems to recognize this position... the cold. The feeling of being observed as a specimen... this feeling... cannot be erased. I will find out what has been done to me... and when I regain my memory... I will have my compensation." ~Insectoid Aristocrat
  20. Planet: G09 Tags: Science (Edits by JackJonespaw) "Log date 415, this is Dr. Danielle Long. Continued inspection of gravity and temporal anomalies on Greater Drigo has led our team of scientists to discover a large facility of some sort in the badlands of Drigo. You'd have thought out earlier drone surveys would have spotted this, but the anomalies have interfered with their readings. We've begun gathering perimeter intelligence, and next week we will move in on the facility in full force. In the meantime though, all we can do is examine it from afar. Perhaps when we get inside, we can get to the bottom of these bizarre phenomenon, and turn them into lucrative products for Octan." The facility is hollow, and can be fitted with lights as such. The light was held by a Minifigure in this case. Dr. Long to be specific. ~Insectoid Aristocrat
  21. Peace and quiet at last in the 1st Branch Executive Lounge. (A follow up to Pombe's build) Finish the night's paperwork Off to bed unedited edit I actually really enjoyed building this. After my first, way too ambitious, plan fell apart (literally) I grabbed those big slope pieces that I'd found, and stuck them together and fell in love with their look, and this grew from that. It kinda has a star wars feel, in my opinion, which is fine by me. So here we have a mellow late night moc mirroring my sentiments at the time. ~Insectoid Aristocrat

Drone inspection of Greater Drigo has uncovered several "Unidentified Anomalies" one of which is clearly a spaceship. The vehicle itself appears to be recently made, but it's design is identical to those used by humans from the 20th, 21st, or 23rd century (I'm not a history buff. I'll leave the dating to the Axle's experts.) Regardless, this is an ancient human vessel, but it's recently made... the object is completely abandoned, and there is no sign of activity in the area for years... drones in the area have also detected bizarre gravity and temporal anomalies in close proximity to the Object. This certainly calls for further investigation. Dr. Long signing out." Flight mode This is the second neo classic space themed MoC I've built, but it won't be the last. You'll see many such MoCs from me the next few weeks as I begin hosting "Blacktron Mafia" (sign ups open in a few days!) I am pretty pleased with this spaceship, but as always, criticism and Critiques are more than welcome! Better pictures are up. It's impressive how much difference a little light can make! Extra picture with a model (who looks suspiciously like Jebediah) in the (finished) cocpit. ~Insectoid Aristocrat
  23. note: title should read G09 Tags: Science "Log date 420, this is Dr. Danielle Long. We have entered the temporal anomaly and begun searching for the origin point of the gravity fluctuations our sensors have been detecting. I predict this may take a week." Ok, I'm super lame and super tired. I have a pile of unfinished builds now in my attic. Too few hours in the week, but I can't miss a week. ~Insectoid Aristocrat

The tropic regions of Planet Wastyria in Sector H09 are host to the greatest biodiversity on this otherwise frigid planet. Here temperatures rarely sink below 0 degrees Celsius, allowing for a myriad of temperature sensitive creatures to thrive. I have stumbled upon an organism roughly analogous to earth coral here. Presently I am utilizing an Aquatic Hardsuit to get a closer look at this biome." Dr. Long is finally doing some innocent Scientific research. She finds out that Kodan has a time machine later! I'd like as much feedback (be harsh! I can take it!) on the coral as I possibly can, as a coral reef not too dissimilar to this will feature as part of a contest entry for something else... ~Insectoid Aristocrat
  25. Sector: H04 Tags: Science, Civil "Log Date 454, This is Dr. Danielle Long. Samples of the native species analogous to earth coral are currently being retrieved for testing on the Axle. It is in diverse biomes such as this one that the most profitable compounds are typically discovered. I expect this will yield many a new product for Octan... but only time and testing will reveal these compounds. I am surfacing presently. Dr. Long out." Odus Dillberg, Dr. Long's Secretary: "Ah, yeah, right there, biological samples collection droid. Right there on my shoulders. yeah. Lots of stress to relieve there. Mmm." Dr. Long: "Another day, another misappropriation of Octan equipment." Odus: "Ah! Didn't see you there Danielle!" Dr. Long: "What exactly have you tasked this specimen collection droid with? This is hardly protocol. Where are your clothes?" Odus: "Oh, I had the droid store them in one of his little compartments!" Dr. Long: "You know those compartments will not open after they've been shut except for within one of the Axle's "Hazard Assessment" Labs?... Right?" Odus: "Oh." Dr, Long: "I'll take that as a no. Any calls come in while I was working?" Odus: "Oh yeah! Thanks for reminding me! Kodan called! He's in sector F10 with that thing you told me to send to him! Well! He has some important news to share with you! I took a message!" Dr. Long: "If it was important, why didn't you forward it to me?" Odus: "Well, you sounded like you were having fun looking at all the cool animals and stuff under the sea, so I didn't want to bother you." Dr. Long: "What is the message?" Odus: "Oh yeah... Project Icarus is a time machine! Surprise!" Dr. Long: "A WHAT?! And you didn't inform me of this immediately?!" Odus: "Surprise!" Dr. Long: Cancel my appointments for tomorrow. I will be re-assuming control of this project. I want the object delivered to the Axle immediately. Thereafter, I will assess the object's safety and begin preparations for a thorough inspection of its capabilities. I also want any information Kodan may already have acquired. This must all be conducted with the utmost secrecy. I would not want a time machine to fall into the wrong hands." Odus: "You got it boss!" Dr. Long: "Oh... And one more thing. Send Kodan and his handler robot, ED-208, something to keep them safe. A pair of Ma.K. hard suits. Knowledge is dangerous." Odus: " Hard Suits for Kodan and that Ed guy, got it!" ______________________________________________________________ One Week Later, in the remote H04 sector........... In one of the Axle's ejectable high-risk labs... "Log Date 461, This is Dr. Danielle Long. This device is remarkable. Project Icarus was indeed an apt title for this project, as It must be the source of the anachronistic facility in which it was discovered. It would appear that the original Scientist who created this device are long dead. Perhaps slain in a Zoid raid. But some of the facility's personnel escaped with the Ter Tahl sentients of sector F10's Arium Major. I consulted with their people regarding this device, but the only novel information with which they could provide me was that the device was volatile. I have decided to house the object in its original container: a Blue Box, and perform a myriad of tests on it to assess its safety. Thereafter I will conduct tests to determine how... if... It works. A Time Machine is a fixture of science fiction, but the laws of physics preclude its creation in the real world. Should I indeed have my hands upon the genuine article... Well... This could fundamentally alter Humanity's understanding of the universe... And remove the restrictions of time and space from Octan's quest for resources. With a time machine... well... The possibilities are limitless.... But I'm getting ahead of myself. We first must determine if it works... And then how... before we can use it. To this end I've tasked a select team of theoretical physicists with the inspection of the machine, and its safe operation. We're working around the clock to figure this puzzle out. For the time being, I will leave this in the capable hands of Blenjamen Blandin, one of Octan's finest physicists. Dr. Long signing off." Dr. Long: "Dr. Blandin?" Blenjamen Blandin: "Y-y-y-yes, Dr. Long?" Dr. Long: "I will be in my office looking over this data. Please continue your work. I want this object monitored 24/7. Don't let anything happen to it... and if it activates, I want you to eject the lab. Even if you are in it. Understood?" Dr. Blandin: "I-I-I, uh, Understood." Dr. Long: "OK, Great." ___________________________________ Later....... Dr. Blandin: "Uh, oh! Great S-s-scott! The F-f-f-flux Inhibitor is l-l-loose!" "Wha-Whoah!" OoC: Don't worry. The "Octan has a time machine" will not last Long. No spoilers. but yeah. ~Insectoid Aristocrat
