Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Mission #10: Pins & Needles

Enson bears down upon the Cladrasith and strikes a mighty blow, piercing through her tough bark. Across the table Aysu and Jonk scramble around the chairs as Aysu lands a tremendous hit on the Archivist and Enson encourages her onward. As the Archivist retreats to the corner of the room, the scholar quickly enacts a warding spell as her guards form up in a defensive position. Jonk dodges one bolt as the Adamite manages to scrape Enson with a glancing shot. MM Note: You are correct about the position, the battle map has been updated. Regarding the performance check, in lieu of any sort of description of how you intended to use performance to distract the archivist the deception check was substituted in as that was the desired effect.

MM Note: So lots going on here that basically boils down to a deception check with an attempt to surprise the Archivist. Enson Deception Check vs. Archivist Insight Check - (2,6,6) 2 Successes vs. (4,1,2,4,5,4) 4 Successes Enson Sleight of Hand Check vs. Archivist Perception Check - (3,5,3) 1 Success vs. (2,5,2) 1 Success As Enson stands he clears his throat to accept the offer, the Archivist stares at him detecting a slight waiver in his voice and seeing him make to draw his sword. "Your words say one thing, though your voice and hands betrays you. I'm sorry we couldn't come to an arrangement that worked for the both of us." Jonk notes negotiations souring and makes to blind the nearest guard with the flour. Jonk Athletics Check vs. Elite Elf Thug Skill - (2,4,5) 2 Successes vs. (1,4) 1 Success = Elf Blinded for 1st round of combat. "Guards, dispose of them, I have other matters to attend to." MM Note: Agreeing to the deal and going along with it will move you toward the conclusion of the mission, if Enson is intending to lie then make that clear and the mission will continue down that path. I've given you traits about the Archivist it's up to you to determine how to use them. You've circumnavigated the need for explosives at this point (unless you want to get into the East Vault). Mission Items do not designate critical importance to the mission, only that they could prove helpful in certain circumstances and will be removed from the PC's inventory at the end of the mission. Dagger's Letter (useful if the party used the vault's archive to look up changelings), Tehanui Teal (one of the NPC's becomes much friendlier if offered the drink), Nanite Elixer (Negotiating item), Flour (potentially usable in a fight), Certain keys (unlock vaults/containment units), Golden Scorpion (could generate more poison in the lab). The mission goal was to retrieve Jippo (accomplished), any further goals by your characters are up to you. MM Note: I understand you don't want to disrupt any play, but it would be good to know Aysu's opinion on whether she'd take some sort of deal with the Archivist. The Archivist has also inquired of Aysu a few times wanting to know more about her. If Aysu isn't wanting to give anything away, that isn't a problem, it'd simply be nice to have a post saying that "Aysu stares back at the Archivist resolutely, refusing to answer any questions" or something like that.

"That is the nature of those who honor the past. They see its value, even if it may not be realized in the moment." The Archivist finishes her tea before addressing the group as a whole. "Now then, unless you have other demands, here is how I see it: Mr. Jonk here is amiable to financial and material compensation, I assume your tight-lipped pink haired associate is as well, though I wouldn't have minded getting to know her better. As for you, the scrolls of the Ri'viod. In return, those who have left here will not be pursued and information about the particulars of this archive will remain undisclosed. Do we have an understanding?"

"So you were a member of the Mar'viosh, or something akin to it I presume?" The Archivist focuses upon Enson, "My race continuously experience the memories of our elders in The Remembering, we recall the O'Kor'uk's rise to power and their downfall and subsequent subjugation, the days the great Groves were burned and felled... I believe I have something in my archive that you may indeed find of use. During the Pluravian conquest of Vin'quo, a number of artifacts were captured by the Ytaxxi and relocated to Hi-Pluvvon. During the most recent war with the League a number of the Imperial museums were shuttered and their private collections auctioned off to help fund the fighting. So saying, this vault now houses the Ri'viod, The Children of the Delta, scrolls detailing the genealogical history of Quo'ri generations stretching back before the invasion of the planet. I assume they were taken so that no-one could question the legitimacy of the installed aristocracy. I'd imagine in the right hands, these scrolls could be used to bring instability to certain established governmental structures of Vin'quo, no? A culture so steeped in tradition and honor, would find it difficult to tolerate such deception on a wide scale." MM Note: @Peppermint_M Anything to add?

MM Note: So sorry folks, apparently my last post didn't actually upload. The archivist's eyes narrow as she studies Enson trying to ascertain his motives. "Perhaps, though I'm sure you'd find parts of the collection better suited to such an undertaking itself rather than as fodder for the coffers of a war. Though, rebellions do have a tendency to bury history, something I'm sure you know I like avoiding. Why, are you intending to lead one?" "Excellent, then I'll wait for your companions thoughts on the offer."

Jonk Deception Check vs. Achivist Insight Check - (3,1,1) 0 Success vs. (6,2,1,2,1,6) 2 Successes "Hmm... An outfit like yours could hardly demand such a high fee. No, I'd say somewhere along the line of 150 credits, some sort of treasure or artifact, and of course business contacts would be satisfactory." MM Note: You're going to make me do the hard work. "The Quo'ri value both beauty and tradition. Perhaps you would care for a sapling of the Alurien Moon Oak, a species of plant known only to the world before the annihilation of the planet. The songs of generations of the fair folk grew these trees into the first of their living starcraft. Sonicsomatic in nature, the plant is shaped to the will of the musician who imparts meaning to it." The Cladrasith sips in thought, "Or maybe you are more concerned with something of more historical value? A lost chapter of the 'Book of the Sky' written by the wife of Ar’Kon’il and detailing the steps required for her lover's return. Of course there is always those who wish to know more about Gate Builders. In which case, perhaps a miniturized Æthergate would be of interest?"

"Well, perhaps you'd like to share what you were getting paid to break in here in the first place?" Jonk Perception Check (DC 1,3) - (5,3,5) 2 Successes The guards shuffle from foot to foot, equally assessing the threat of the heroes given how many of their fellow employees were already dead. "Of course you don't. The Quo'ri are rarely ones to hoard wealth. That part of the collection was donated from a sect of the Thaumaturgic Society, most of the containment units are spell powered. You have to understand, while this is a collection, there is a good amount that others would have preferred destroyed than preserved. Remnants of civilizations, lost species, artifacts from bygone ages. You only breached the Western Vault, where the living specimens are stored. The Eastern Vault houses the true valuables of the collection. Substances from around the galaxy. Examples of all artistry and creativity from across the millennia. Tell me, what excites you? What mysteries still puzzle you?"

"Milk and sugar of course." The Cladrasith adjust Jonk's tea and passes him the cup. As the celestial sips the hot beverage he notes a warmer tone and an aroma that includes cinnamon, cocoa, and dried apricots. "In my many years, I've learned to overlook people's first knee-jerk reactions and found most disagreements are better handled with diplomacy over violence." The Archivist takes a sip from her tea, "As for an offer, as I said, I recognize talent, and your group has been most efficient in working your way through my facility. You were sent here to complete a job and from my understanding that is now complete. The simplest offer would be to let you leave here alive. However, considering some of you may harbor certain qualms, I'm sure we could come to a certain material recompense as a show of appreciation for discretion." "Interesting, is that a trait of your kind or simply a matter of preference?"

<You can count on us.> "It's a big universe. Lots of things go missing. Lots of things require hiding. Lots of things require storage. But we'll discuss that... come." The Archivist and her guards lead the group through the main hall and to the door that the heroes had previously found locked. Inside sits a rather large conference room, several comfy chairs and an oversized table fill the space with a number of display cases lining the walls. The archivist pours a cup of tea from a newly placed kettle and begins to sip it before pouring a cup for Jonk. "How do you take your tea, Mr. Jonk? The rest of you? It's a fine leaf. Exceedingly rare Oquim Oolong."

"Ah, I see." Enson Persuasion vs. Archivist Persuasion - (5,3,5,4) 3 Success vs. (4,4,1,6,1,2,3,2) 3 Successes "A Menahi, Dwarf, and Ornithun, hardly rare gems in the collection. I trust the Dwarf learned his lesson. Very well, they may go." "If they ignored her disappearance in the first place, I doubt they'll make note of her reappearing... As for your organization. I hear it's not quite what it was, down on hard times so I've heard. Struggling to maintain memberships. Would be surprised if someone didn't offer to buy it out sooner or later for the real estate." Enson Insight Check (DC 3) - (6,3,1,2) 1 Success If the Cladrasith was bluffing, her face certainly didn't show it. The lines and creases of the elderly Archivist betrayed little of her emotions. "Of course. Now, shall we?"

"After collecting for nearly a century, I can assure you it is of the highest quality." "Civility is but a tool, knowing when to employ it is the trick. As for paying for my crimes, exactly how much is that cost?" "What makes you believe I have need of more assassins? Surely you don't believe this facility has existed for so long without ensuring that certain prying eyes are kept dutifully blinded. By rest you refer to the collection I assume?"

"Hello Jonk, you're a celestial are you not? Yes, I think you'll find the seating in my office more comfortable." The Cladrasith spots Aysu and addresses her with a warm smile. "Well and who and what might you be" "Oh, you doubt my hospitality? Amusing... any quarrel with me is also with them, or do you doubt who pays their salary." Enson Performance Check vs. Archivist Persuasion Check - (4,4,1,2) 2 Successes vs. (6,6,2,3,4,2,3,2) 3 Successes The guards adjust their weapons, but seem unfazed by Enson's tactics. "Judgement you say? You wouldn't be the first. I won't argue with your conclusions, I came to accept who I am long ago. I am a woman of particular tastes and talents and the collection behind you is the testament to those skills. Talent recognizes talent however, which is why I'd prefer to discuss things instead of tossing you into a containment pod and throwing away the combination. Of course if you really want to try and enact your 'judgement' then I won't have much of a choice in the matter. So about the tea, shall I put a kettle on?" Enson Meditates to full spirit.

The vault door opens revealing the group Enson had just noted after trying to teleport. A well dressed Cladrasith stands accompanied by four well armed guards, her foliage resembling cherry blossoms. The heroes note an additional four thugs standing nervously at the exits from the main hall. "Well, you lot have caused quite the stir in my schedule today. Destroyed my front entryway, killed the good doctor, ruined a trade deal with the Corvians, stolen priceless artifacts, and let loose dangerous beasts. I'm not quite sure what sort of treatment you expect, but I can say I'm willing to be reasonable. Do you take tea?"

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Rules & FAQ

I reached out to Kintobor for an update, if I don't hear anything I'll wrap it up and have the heroes return to the hall. Characters will still receive experience for the mission.
  18. ~This topic is meant for all discussion and questions about the rules of Heroica RPG. For other topics related to the game, see the Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars Index. ~ Rev. 1.1 FAQ Characters Q: Is there an easier way to check my Character Creation Stats? A: Yes, you can find a point calculator here Q: When creating a character, to what topic do I post it? A: Post the character's statistics into the Hero Statistics Registrations topic, and make a link to that post in your signature (the link address can be found by clicking the number on the upper right corner of the post). Then introduce your character in the Heroica Hall topic. Q: When introducing ourselves, do we need a lengthy intro? A: It is your decision as to how long and detailed the intro will be. Q: Do I need my character picture up right away? A: No, as long as you get them up eventually. You will not be able to go into a mission without a picture of your character, though. If you cannot make an image yourself, ask your fellow players. Q: What are the differences between the Proficiencies? A: The skill Proficiencies are intended to have multiple uses, but the general descriptions below can help inspire you as to their use. ·Acrobatics: Balancing, stunts requiring dexterity of the body ·Arcana: Knowledge of Esoteric magic, potion making ·Artillery Weapons: Usage of Artillery range weapons ·Athletics: Climbing, jumping, swimming, breaking down a door ·Coding: Writing Software, Hacking a system, knowledge of Livecode and Ætherdiving ·Culture: Knowledge about traditions, history, famous figures, pop culture trends ·Deception: Lying, misleading ·Engineering: Constructing and operating large electrical devices, knowledge about practical sciences ·Explosives: Usage of explosive devices and demolition ·Insight: Determining intentions, detecting lies, gut feelings ·Intimidation: Influencing by threatening, physical violence, feats of strength ·Long Range Weapons: Usage of long range weapons ·Medicine: Diagnosing illnesses, applying medical aid, determining cause of death ·Melee Weapons: Usage of melee weapons ·Nature: Knowledge about animals, plants, natural phenomenon, and Substantive magic ·Occult: Knowledge about Phantasmagoric magic, cults, demons, cosmic horrors ·Perception: Spotting, hearing, or detecting things ·Performance: Entertainment, dancing, acting, storytelling ·Persuasion: Influencing by tact, rational arguments, or social graces ·Piloting: Steering vehicles, charting courses, knowledge about starcraft ·Religion: Knowledge about cosmologies, pantheons, worship practices, religious orders, and Theurgical Magic ·Short Range Weapons: Usage of short range weapons ·Sleight of Hand: Concealing objects, pickpocketing, feats requiring manual dexterity ·Stealth: Moving silently, hiding from enemies ·Survival: Following tracks, weather predicting, danger assessment ·Technology: Constructing and operating small electronic devices, knowledge about theoretical sciences Q·: Can I change my character’s stats or start a new character? A: Yes, while we find it entertaining to see characters grow from mission to mission, we understand that sometimes you won’t know if you find a certain character or playstyle enjoyable until you actually play. With that in mind, if you wish to “respec” your characters creation and level up points you are free to do so. Please follow the below constraints: - Do not respec during a mission. - It is preferable (but not necessary) to have a story to go along with your character’s change in stats; the Training Room thread is appropriate for this roleplay. - If you are starting a brand new character, you may only transfer character points. Items and Equipment are not transferred between new and old characters. Please do not attempt to circumvent this. Q: I can't make a long-term commitment. Can I still play? A: Heroica: Glory Among the Stars RPG is more of a game system than a single continuous game. You can create your hero character whenever you like, and wait for a good time to sign into a mission. You should be able to play for the duration of the mission you sign into, though. Q: I’ve invested character points into Spirit and a casting skill (Arcana/Nature/Occult/Religion) where are the spells listed? A: Simply visit the Training Room for a list of the available spells. Between missions you may switch a number of spells that you know equal to your Spirit Attribute. Q: Does it matter what Species I play? Can I create my own Species? A: In Heroica: Glory Among the Stars RPG, your character’s Species does not provide any mechanical advantage. This is to facilitate creative characters without feeling constrained by mechanics. Feel free to visit the Embassy for a list of the Species widely found in the setting. You are also free to create your own Species, the only restriction being that you respect the established canon. If you have questions, feel free to ask in the Discussion thread. If the species is unique/becomes popular enough among the community you may be asked to provide a short write-up that can be included in the Embassy later on. Missions: Q: How and when can I start a mission of my own? A: First you should read the Mission Master’s Lounge-topic, which gives you insight about what is required from a Mission Master and a good mission. You can send your mission idea to Waterbrick Down or one of the game managers, via a private message when you think you are well prepared, but you must have at least one successfully concluded mission under your belt, so that you know how the game basically works. Even then, if your idea is not good enough or the game managers do not deem you ready to host, you might be turned down. In that case you should heed the game managers’ feedback and try again later. Q: If there are enough sign-ups to a mission and everything was ready, would the mission start early? A: Not necessarily, we'd still need to give everyone time to sign up before the deadline. The sign-up deadlines can be changed by the MM's jurisdiction, though. Q: Is it possible to change what missions you sign into? A: Yes, you can change as much as you want until the sign-ups end. Q: How long does a mission take? A: It varies greatly, so you have to ask each Mission Master separately. Q: When a mission starts, can the chosen players still post in the Heroica Hall topic? A: Not until the mission is over, unless the Mission Master specifically allows it. Q: Will my Vitality and Spirit be restored automatically after I finish a mission? A: Yes, since you can rest as much as you want in-between missions. Q: When you lose a mission, do you keep the experience and items you earned in battles? A: You get to keep the experience and items you gain during a mission, even if it fails. You just won't get the promised reward. Battles: Q: Can I attack without a weapon? A: Yes, you can. Weaponless attacks utilize the Strength attribute to determine the dice pool. You may only target an enemy adjacent to you when attacking without a weapon and the damage dealt is kinetic. Magic: Q: Does an unsuccessful casting of a spell cost Spirit? A: Yes, Spirit is deducted each time a spell is cast, whether successful or not. Weapons: Q: What happens if you have multiple weapons? A: You can only equip one weapon at a time, and that is the weapon that is listed in your equipment. Usually the strongest available weapon is equipped, but if a situation arises where you would like to use another weapon instead, just mention it to the mission Master. Changing equipped weapons in a battle does cost a turn, so it is often a smart strategy to carry spare weapons with different damage types. Q: Is there a limit to how powerful a weapon can be? A: Yes, weapons start out as a Standard grade, but can be subsequently improved to Calibrated, then Engineered, and finally Precision. Likewise armor may be upgraded from Standard, to Padded, to Reinforced, and finally Composite. Q: What sort of weapon can I use? Can I use a tank or a mecha suit? A: Weapons are mechanically broken into 3 different damage categories (kinetic, elemental, and energy) and 4 different range categories (melee, short range, long range, and artillery). Outside of these categories, weapons are intentionally left generic to allow for characters to have the freedom to describe their weapons however they want. Bombs for instance could be characterized as long range and elemental, a plasma whip could be considered short range and energy, brass knuckles could be melee and kinetic. The one constraint is that weapon sizes should be limited to things that could be reasonably carried by the character, thus no tanks, ships, or giant mecha suits. Some other weapon examples by damage type: - Elemental: Flamethrower, Cryogen Spray, Electro-whip, Toxic Claws - Energy: Plasmacaster, Laser Pistol, Beam Saber, Sonic Bombs - Kinetic: Rail-rifle, Antique Revolver, Vibro-Knife, Titanium Knuckles Tools: Q: You can only equip a certain amount of tools, but can you carry more? What exactly is classified as a tool? A: You can carry more than the amount of tools you can equip in your inventory, but only the ones listed in your equipment will have an effect. If you are unsure whether or not an item is considered a tool, ask the Mission Master that gave it to you. Note that changing equipped tools during a battle will cost a turn. Consumable Items: Q: Consumable items can be used on anyone in battle, correct? A: Yes, on yourself, on your allies, even on enemies as long as they are adjacent to your character. Miscellaneous: Q: When dividing numbers, do you round down or round up? A: Always round down. Q: Do diagonal squares count as 1 square or 2? A: Diagonal squares count as 1 square for purposes of moving and targeting. Q: Can I give items and credits or trade things with other players? A: Yes, it is allowed as long as both of you update your profile accordingly. Cheating or circumnavigating of existing rules will not be tolerated. Q: Can I give items to another ally during a battle? A: Yes, but it will cost a turn for both of you. You can trade multiple items in one turn, but only with one ally per turn and they must be adjacent to you. Q: What happens if my inventory is full? A: If your inventory is full and you come across new items, you may switch the items you currently have in your inventory with the new items. Alternatively you could ask some of your allies to carry some of your equipment in their inventories. Q: How much 'fluff' do I have to read beforehand? A: As much as we'd like to say 'none', that's unfortunately false. We recommend you read at least the Startravel and the Æthergates and Ætherspace entries in the Library. If you're playing an existing species, we recommend reading their entry in the Embassy, as even standard species (Elves, Dwarves, Humans) have some different assumptions here. If you want to incorporate AI into your character or their backstory, the Artificial Life entry in the same thread explains how the setting handles that. Q: Since Meditate is a Standard Action, can I just infinitely cast spells outside of combat? A: Technically, yes. However keep in mind attempting to abuse the rules in a manner to intentionally frustrate a Mission Master, probably will not end well for you or maybe your party. Q: Can my player help another player make a Proficiency or Attribute check. A: Yes, players can assist others in a task creating an Assisted Check. Each person assisting should come up with a meaningful explanation of how they are contributing to solve the situation. The assisting player's proficiency dice are then added to player making the Check. The assistance does not need to be of the same Proficiency. I.e. someone could assist with an Athletics Proficiency Check to break a door down with their Perception Proficiency to point out a weakness in one of the door's hinges.

Jonk Perception Check (DC 1,3,5) - (2,5,3,5,) 2 Successes The vault extends for a good distance to the party's left and right, though the numbering of the containment units indicates that the path creates a loop. Jonk does spot a security camera above the vault door that moves to focus upon them. The ceiling is dark and obscured and difficult to search for ventilation ducts.

Of the 200 living specimens, it appeared another 50 were in some sort of stasis. As Enson stepped inside the sick dwarf lunged at him. "Yrrggg!" Enson Athletic Check (DC 1) - (2,2,6) 1 Success The Quo'ri quickly sidesteps as his patient rams into the glass. Restraining the dwarf with three of his arms, Enson jams the concoction down the victim's throat. After a few more struggles the dwarf goes limp and sinks to the floor. A minute passes, two, three and then the pale translucent color begins to disappear from Jippo's skin and after another minute or two he sits up. "Yeesh, I've got a splittin' headache, feel like I've been roused from the dead, I do. Who are you lot? Where am I?" At that moment an alarm begins to sound and the vault door closes, trapping the heroes and the newly rescued Jippo inside. "I'm guessing that ain't a good sign, no?"
