    Earthquake in Cologne

Hi, Maybe my brief tuturial can help. Feel free to ask and I open en extra thread where I can show you this in full detail. I did a simpler form of this in my first moc. Take a look at that, too. It uses less brick types and helps to get an understanding. The Front - Fantasy medieval like house front - Lego MOC by Ralf Langer, auf Flickr I needed to do this several times till I got it finally right. The trick is to use bricks that have an offset (jumper, rail-brick) and to use moveable 1x2 tiles inbetween. Unfortunately this is much harder than it sounds because 1x2 tiles, well there are tiles, don't allow to build upon them. There are some patterns that work. Start with two 1x2 plates, a rail brick and a tile. BHTextures by Ralf Langer, auf Flickr

You only have to tell me what DBG means? I wanted to add links here for tutorials or add a new thread... I'm not certain what the best way is. Coming soon nevertheless.

Oh, the creation time would "only" be a few weeks. I should be much faster now. But I really like to do some others things first.I don't want to repeat myself so I turn to a totally different topic now. But I'm almost sure I will do this some day! I also would like to do a real "end of time" scenario some day. Something like Fallout.

In fact I thought about a scene similar to this but with a giant alien steel cylinder (beloging maybe to a tripod) in the middle of it. But I fear this will take months or years... I have plenty of totally different plans first.

No chance! One reason is that it is so huge that I had to put it on the floor in my living room. Which means that I have to disassemble it in a few days to get my space back and be able to clean the floor again. Also I didn't had enough parts - those houses are almost all only 1x2 plates(!) - to do a full build. Its mostly fassades :-(

Thanks! It may sound funny but I did a few hours of research. Mostly outside for the pavement and gullys. And as a tree fell onto the house of my father I had first hand information there, too, though no window was shattered.

You are right here, though I am not the first one and by far not the most extreme. The whole MOC was planned as a "picture".

Thanks! I'm really glad that you can feel the mood here! I was afraid it's too much of a show off, too technical and crowded. You think the scale is larger than minifg? It's hard to tell because the minifigs are proportionally so different from humans - the ratio of height and width is totally different. As a guide I used the height to measure things. Some of the windows of the "older" houses are very high though indeed :-) I called myself a noob for my posting skills. I wouldn't consider myself a noob builder anymore

No, some things are quite obious - e.g. the car, the minifig - but also the broken branch, some bushes, the fir tree... I wanted some things to be flexibleso I could change them more easily. Some things are more or less fixed, but not by klicking studs! The alternating bricks in the wall of the brown house are shiftable.

By request :-) Here you can see the full madness. Hope this suits you. As you can see, the whole road is bend! I did this so you can have a look at the torn side of the brown house. You can see that I used simple slopes to achieve the bend.

No way! The tree is the center of this whole MOC. I only thought about removing it temporarily to change the house underneath. But then I didn't dare...

That's indeed much better! Thanks for the Tip! As you can see I'm still a total noob - to much building and to few posting.

@Drunknok & @LegoModularFan I surely don't want to discourage anyone. The good thing is, it's not a question of talent to build like me. The bad thing is you really really need much, much, MUCH time if you are not blessed with talent. I might be the slowest builder around to compensate. What I do is hard work. Back when I did my first MOC I remember that I needed days for a little part of the roof. Let alone the fact that I tried many different versions of a small roof. Everytime I do a new MOC I feel like the first man on earth. Totally lost. And - by the way - I you haven't build yet, you can not know what you are capable of. I never thought myself I get this far. I can give you any technique I know, but one of the main tricks is the mind set. Ignore the grid. But beware: it's no fun. Really good builders achive similar moods and effects without my technical exaggerarion.

@Skalldyr Originally I had other signs too, besides the dead end. And lamps, and garbage cans in many colours (as we germans love to sort our garbage there are several colours for them). but I had to remove it all because it looked to stuffed.

Thanks a lot! You are very kind. I will do a tutorial for all the weird stuff soon.
  19. Hi Folks, I recently finished my 1st MOC ever and would like to present it here. I hope there are some of you who still enjoy looking at walls in strange angles :-) The cartoony style is done by purpose and I didn't aim for realism. The Front - Fantasy medieval like house front - Lego MOC by Ralf Langer, auf Flickr It features some twisted, huge trees, discoloured bricks and taxing techniques. I'm so glad it is finally finished. It was a little bit to tall for a first MOC. I even planed to build a hill as a socket and a forest, too. But I totally underestimated size and weight. I tried to do it mostly by myself without looking at other MOCs and so It took me ages to fiddle out all thouse angles and techniques. The Front - Lego MOC of a fantasy medieval house front by Ralf Langer, auf Flickr There are no half attached bricks or plates. All the angles were done using hinges. Hinges! Lots(!) of them! Luckily I could buy a few hundred in the Lego Store of cologne My second one is a letdown I tried something experimental and couldn't make it work. Let's wait for the next one.

In fact I 'lost' years just getting the parts. After about one year of buying old collections I realized I never would be able to gather enough parts. I bought about 350 KG (I did some book keeping so I know the weight and the money I spent and the money I got from selling the parts I (assumedly) would never need). I ended with lots of tan and grey parts, but almost nothing in olive, dark orange, medium dark flesh etc. and only a handful of dark green leaves. I checked out china, but they do not offer the rare colours. I spent weeks and about 100 experiments trying to dye Lego with Aceton . As a matter of fact you can really get the exact(!) dark red, dark orange or olive tone from red, orange or lime. Unfortunately the results vary and are unpredictable. The parameters are: heat, time, the mix of water and acetone and if there was already some Lego dissolved in the aceton. I have some test bricks with 10 shades of dark red and you can not tell which one is Lego and which one is dyed because even the Lego colour varies a lot! So after all I decided to stick with the real thing. It feels kind of childish today doing these things instead of just spending some money I met someone by chance in the Lego Store who was showing a MOC with many leaves there. He told me: Ebay. (Today I would say he didn't tell me the truth because Lugbulk was kept a secret in the beginning) I even knew then that Ebay was no way of getting parts. I have already read some rumours about Lugbulk but as I never did a MOC (because I had no parts) I didn't see any chance to take part in. I sold all the minifigs and the sets I restored out of the collections and just bought tons of Lego via Bricklink with the money I made. I have about a hundred times(!) more olive or medium dark flesh (dark orange is only used for the leaves, the small house is done in medium dark flesh) than what you can see in my MOC I would disagree, too. My aim was to build medium MOCs in almost any colour or style I like. You need tons of bricks to do that! Bricks that you can not buy in the stores and that you will not find in collections. In fact I needed only a small fraction of my Lego to build this MOC. But how do you know which parts you are going to need? As for beginners: my advice would be to get connected. Join forums, talk with the members there, do rebuilds with sets you have etc. I decided to do it on my own. But I would no one advice to. It might take years.

That's really flattering to me Whereas the castle scene seems to be obsessed with building techniques (and, yes, I'm one of the worst), lots of modular buildings are a little too basic. My next build will have lots of contemporary buildings. I hope I can do it in February.

Thanks again Roanoke! Yes I'm aware that they are in the past. I have to have much more practise before I can take part in a contest yet (I'm much too slow right now). And I also have to get my Lego sorted first :-) And I have to get some minifigures So the the summer joust, the ccc or cbc might be fine. P.S.: what to you mean I took down my post? It's still there :-) Cheers Ralf

You made some nice builds yourself! The key to my building style is time and lots of tinkering. I build extremely non accordant to the Lego system; you can't do that digitally. And you don't really need that much bricks (ok, you still need a lot, but not extreme amounts).

@Blackbird Thanks! I will gladly have a look at it!
