MOC - World's largest engine

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

this is my last project but the first ever to be published!

The biggest reciprocatong engines in the world are the two-stroke Diesel engines used to power the biggest container ships worldwide.

This project is based on these engines and replicate the structure and the working principle.

In order to keep the piece count to an acceptable level the engine is built on a 6 cylinder configuration in minifigure scale.

In real life this engine would be 15m long, 10m wide and 14m high! Each cylinder erogates 7700Hp at 102rpm!

All details are built trying to replicate the real one and all moving components can be rotated as to replicate the real motion.

Moving parts are:

_Complete crankshaft;

_Connecting rods and crossheads;

_Pistons and piston rods;

_Camshaft complete;

_Timing gears;

_Flywheel;

_Turbocharger turbine and compressor;

_Fuel pumps plugers;

On top of that many parts can be opened/removed to show the internal working mechanisms.

Crankcase panels can be opened, camshaft housing and stuffing box base are equipped with doors, air cooler and receiver can be opened too.

The turbochager has the gas side cover that can be removed and on the compressor side a glass panel is fitted.

The main green color is also the common colour used for this types of engine.

This project is partecipating at the bricklink designer program: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-1/451/World's-largest-engine if voted it may became a real set!!

Cool build, also good, that it is "functional", and also detail level is really good.

An excellent build of a large Marine Diesel Engine,

I was a Chief Marine Enginner on VLCCs for most of my time at sea, now retired.

Just one thing missing: the barring over motor & gear to turn the engine over before starting up on air to ensure all parts free & lubricated etc.

The largest engine built is a 14 cyclinder made by a Finish Company.

A big challenge would be to build a Doxford opposed piston Engine. A Nightmare to work on.

The turning gear is present, you can see it on the lower left side of the flywheel.

I wanted to build it in the 14 cylinders configuration but the part limit for the designer program is 4000 so this is the maximum with this part count

It is good that there are only 6 cylinders, as would get tired building so much cylinders - all that repetitive build of the same thing.
