Yard Shunter wanted.

Recommended Posts

So, as my lego expands Im going to build a marshelling yard and want a small powerfull shunter.

I really like this on here:

type_01_diesel_shunter_02.jpg

But due to rapid expansion and me being way in the dark ages for 4 decades I dont have a ready supply of bricks to attempt anything. My imagination needs awakening as well..

Anywhere, as the lego theme on the net seems huge, is there anywhere I can download a parts list and instructions???

Well, their is the instructions at Railbricks .com ( http://railbricks.com/ ), some olderr ones at L Gauge .com ( http://lgauge.com/ )

Also, here are some questions to narrow down the potential switcher engine: What are you looking for? steam, diesel, electric, or something not mentioned? Do you want it to be modern or old fashioned? What country (or basic design school) do you want to model, such as American 1950's diesel switchers, English BR Class 08's, or some German steamers, for example ? Do you care for authenticity over play-ability or vice-versa?

Don't stress if you don't have all the answers, that's what makes some of the best models: having no idea what you are doing and slapping parts together randomly to make a rough idea, then refining it.

If you want a switcher or freight loco to go with your 60051, i would suggest looking at lord Legoman's Flickr feed. Specifically, this one: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lordlegoman/17641241434/in/album-72157661676247756/

i could whip up a copy in LDD in no time, if you want to use this model as a basis

Definitely find out which prototype you want to model. Seeing that your from England, the British Railways shunting locomotives would be the obvious choice. My personal favorites would be the Class 08 or the Class 04.

If you want to try something from another country I know a lot of switch locomotives here in the U.S. that would be interesting too. Some like the RS-4-TC were designed in the U.S. and built so that in the event of WWIII they could be shipped to Britain and France and be used to boost rail traffic. While I don't think any RS-4-TC locomotives actually made it to Europe, a lot of them are still in use (within 30 minutes from my parent's home there are FOUR RS-4-TC's in use by different industries in the valley.)

Like Murdoch said, what are you looking for? And what system do you use? I assume PF but 9V has great advantages when building small shunters!

I would suggest to at least use a technic motor, the M motor would do the trick.

http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=55729&hl=7760 Is a good example for a PF shunter using the M motor. The technic motors are lower geared then the standard train motor and are thus slower, but also more powerful!

If you need more space for motors a slug (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slug_(railroad)) could be a fun thing to make, doesn't need many pieces and can be coupled up to larger LEGO locomotives while still having a lot of power. note that you would want to have the 'mother' (the bigger sized locomotive) to not have its own motor as its hard to control different motors at the same speed. You could just swap the motor from an standard LEGO train like 60052 and give the slug 2 M motors.

Hi, thanks for the input.

My plan is for many models over the coming future and at the moment I fancy building a marshelling yard so a little shunter came into mind.

Im not fussed be it diesel or steam because i like both. Modern, old, EU or USA. I really want a mix of them all. The blue shunter above ticks the boxes for my derv section.

I am an automotive engineer by trade and my last home project was a 1/10 6x6 crawler lorry that I built from scratch. Im also in the process of building a replica Willys MB in the garage with a 215 V8.

My current bit of lego is the 60051 and nothing else. Im just starting on the lego path again. I had a tecnics car way back in the 70's so would look forward to tthe challenge of a technics motor build or pf :sweet:

Im already thinking of what I could do with a Raspberry Pi seeing as they are so cheap! They where free on the front of one the magazines last month but all got snapped up befroe I could get one...

Also have a look at Arduino ;). What are the other models you (and the little boss...) have in mind? She likes crashing trains so how about one with a crane on it?

Im getting carried away! You can probably build a heavy shunter with 60052 as an inspiration. I'm thinking of a model with a really long nose and a cab at the end.
