So, do we prefer an animal contest over a non-vehicle/non-animal contest? I was actually thinking about the latter, but if you all prefer animals, I don't mind.

If we go ahead with that I am inclined to allow mythical creatures and the likes (pokemon and such).

Leave your confort zone. You will not regret it.

To be more specific, the problem is not mechanical, but the theme selection. Since my external design skills are not very good compared to others (in fact, I think that is the main reason why I have not been voted higher poistion despite participating in many contests. With my photographing skills.), I am much less confident in creature design. Of course, one other reasons is that I can't decide is which animal to make. To be honest, I think this design issue plus several others are what's making me depressed these days.

So if the theme is to build some kind of walking machine, not animals, I'd be willing to participate. Because I have an idea for that topic.

Instead of strict animal themed contest, biomechanics/"build like the Nature" sound much better to me. ;)

Agreed, I think a complex hand model capable of somewhat realistic articulation would be really cool, and sorta fitting with the theme. Animals alone feels too restrictive.

Why not both? I mean, let's do an animal/biomechanics contest now and non-vehicle/non-animal contest next when it's time for another contest?

The entries would vary so much that voting would be a nightmare.

I kinda agree; although we could vote for the highest quality one, that is a very broad spectrum; someone could make a cheetah, and somebody could make a clock. Those two things have almost nothing in common other than possible movement mechanics. I think a non-vehicle, non-animal contest is best.

How about we do NON-VEHICLE after all. There seem to be enough different ideas.

I think that's what I'd prefer. Animals are cool, but it's a pretty intense challenge, and I'm not sure many people would be up for it. I don't know if I would, to be honest! I hate missing contests, but trying to model both organic shapes and organic motions might be too intimidating for me to put off my other projects to compete

I think we need to go for that. Not being able to build a vehicle is enough of a challenge. So it's nice to have some freedom in choosing what to build.

Maybe the problem with the animal theme is that most people think that means organic shapes. What I meant by animal theme is an animal inspired theme. Be it mecha, kinetic sculpture, replica of a toy, etc. The animal-like figure should be the main part, so an animal transporting vehicle should not be allowed, I hope you get the idea.

So no, the model doesn't have to be a fury perfectly moving replica of an actual animal.

How would people feel about this sort of thing? It's not strictly a vehicle, but I think making it move would be kinda cool.

This is "Fido" from the anime 86, and I think he's really cute :)

On one hand, I agree that a generic non-vehicle contest is too wide as a topic, with incomparable entries, maybe building techniques and execution could be judged, but that feels a less meaningful criteria alone.

Why not? It's just for fun, after all.

Just for fun everyone can just build without a contest as well :) It's like organizing a sports contest without specifying the sport and the course to compete on. One could choose running or biking or swimming, plus one can choose their distance as well. And then we give points to how well they performed in their own sport. Quite a meaningful contest, no?

On the other hand I'd be okay with leaving the animal contest for later because I probably won't be able to participate now, and I'd definitely like to participate in the animal contest :) And that's a complex enough topic to deserve exploration.

Those are pretty good examples, exactly what I have been thinking of!

This is a difficult one. but since it is not used to transport things or people I thinkt it fits.

Vehicle:

a thing used for transporting people or goods, especially on land, such as a car, lorry, or cart.

I don't think Animal vs Handheld devices vs Househould Appliances would be a fair comparison.

I do think we can judge these different models and I do not want to limit the scope too much.
