PlasticGear Posted Sunday at 06:38 PM Posted Sunday at 06:38 PM Hi everyone, Lots of people are getting tired of Technic cars and are looking for something fresh, while still retaining the technical aspect. I spent quite some time looking for a suitable subject, until I remembered my younger self taking apart CD and DVD players to salvage gears and motors. That’s when I realized I had found a nice subject. There are many cool mechanical features that can be incorporated, and some of them are particularly satisfying to watch in action: the disc drive, the moving CD carrier, the retractable drive mechanism, the double-action button for ejecting and inserting the carrier, and more. And to make it even more technical, I used the PF ecosystem so I can't rely on any programation to synchronise the functions. Lots of the work went into the double acting button reliability, and the chassis stiffness, so the gear rack carriers doesn't skip on the gears. I wanted to mix system and technic bricks into the mechanism because it looks good, but I feel it ender more like technic slaps on top of bricks sometimes. To showcase te functions, I made a video of all the small details : To make it convicing I made some brick build details like an HDMI port, power port of an air vent. And of course the CD itself But honestly, I consider this more like draft build. It can be more compact, extra function can be added (such as a moving reader), but for now I am done with this project. If you want to give it a try, I made free instructions that I will link when they released. Hope you liked this MOC Quote
yqc Posted Sunday at 07:35 PM Posted Sunday at 07:35 PM (edited) That is such a cool technical project, exactly what I'd wish for more from LEGO. There isn't by any chance a version which leaves out the System bricks fully (leaving no case at all)? But I'd love the RB link (if/once you publish it there) to check how much of it I have and possibly add it to my to build list. If you're fine with sharing the Studio file, I'd also maybe give modifying it to Thechnic-only a shot myself. Edited Sunday at 07:35 PM by yqc Explain "it" Quote

Well, better than a car Then I read on and then BOOOOOM - I was completely blown away. That is crazy! Unbelievable. You know, this thing looks great as a shelf queen for adults relishing the CD decades ... but when you open the hood, it is a Technic wonder!!! Wow. Yes: Technic and System do >very< well together here. No blue pins, no bullet holes ... Congratulations on this really marvelous achievement!!! And thank you very much for the offering of free instructions. I am very much looking forward to getting these! All the best Thorsten Quote
vascolp Posted Sunday at 08:58 PM Posted Sunday at 08:58 PM This is really very cool!! Seriousely technic! Quote
2GodBDGlory Posted Sunday at 09:04 PM Posted Sunday at 09:04 PM Wow, very impressive! That's some clever mechanics going on in there Quote
aeh5040 Posted Sunday at 10:10 PM Posted Sunday at 10:10 PM Wow, super original idea and very impressive execution! Quote
SNIPE Posted Sunday at 10:52 PM Posted Sunday at 10:52 PM love this, the parts usage , the functions, etc Quote
Luke_ Posted Sunday at 10:54 PM Posted Sunday at 10:54 PM I like those mechanisms you chose, they're all quite surprising as they don't work how I assumed they would, but are rather well done. The self-centering disc drive and laser section is my favorite because of how simple they are. Those trans-red parts for the wheels do look useful! Which part are they? I wonder could the top panel be made out of transparent plates so the mechanisms can be seen more easily? My LG Blu-ray player has a slightly translucent plastic case so I guess it's not too unrealistic. Quote
JesseNight Posted Sunday at 11:39 PM Posted Sunday at 11:39 PM Cool project! 1 small comment, the disc is spinning in the wrong direction. Quote
dr_spock Posted Monday at 12:28 AM Posted Monday at 12:28 AM Cool. Can it also double as a cup holder? Quote
ord Posted Monday at 02:22 AM Posted Monday at 02:22 AM Love it. It's good to see something different and it brings back some memories. These kind of feel like an end of an era of electro-mechanical devices. 1 hour ago, Luke_ said: Those trans-red parts for the wheels do look useful! Agreed. It's always good to know of parts that are resistant to jamming. Quote
PlasticGear Posted Monday at 09:35 AM Author Posted Monday at 09:35 AM Thanks everyone for all your supportive answer ! 13 hours ago, yqc said: There isn't by any chance a version which leaves out the System bricks fully @yqc the build is mostly assembled modules, so it will be quite easy to make a technic chassis. Yes I can provide the stud.io file with the instructions ;) 10 hours ago, Luke_ said: Those trans-red parts for the wheels do look useful! I gess so, maybe using trans-clear panel 59349 could give a nice result. 10 hours ago, JesseNight said: disc is spinning in the wrong direction @JesseNight I absolutly did not look after that crutial detail ^^. I just have to invert the polarity of the PF switch and voilà. Quote

icm Posted Monday at 04:24 PM Posted Monday at 04:24 PM Very interesting project, thanks for posting. The video explains what's going on clearly enough for even me to follow, without a lot of mucking about with gear ratios. Looking forward to seeing more builds like this as long as you're interesting in making them. Quote
m00se Posted Tuesday at 06:03 PM Posted Tuesday at 06:03 PM The ejector mechanism is very satisfying to watch! I love non-vehicle builds like this. Quote
allanp Posted yesterday at 07:25 AM Posted yesterday at 07:25 AM I was always fascinated by the electromechanics you find in older devices and you have totally nailed that feeling with this build. Thank you for sharing and well done Quote
Frequenzberater Posted 46 minutes ago Posted 46 minutes ago (edited) That thing provides a ridiculous amount of complex mechanics :D I love it. Edited 46 minutes ago by Frequenzberater Quote
Jay Psi Posted 37 minutes ago Posted 37 minutes ago (edited) That's a really dense, clean build for a relatively small size. The video is also well-edited and presented. Now someone needs to build a Jaguar with leather seats to put this in! Edited 36 minutes ago by Jay Psi Quote
