Juide_Sock Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Has anyone found a good way to display modular buildings when you're short on space? Collected several over the years, but the apartment doesn't have room for a big city layout. Looking for creative ideas to showcase them without taking up too much floor or shelf space. Quote
Yoggington Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Unfortunately due to the basic laws of physics, you can't have them all out - they'll need space as they do occupy space Best I can suggest is you set aside a shelf that's big enough for say, three modulars, and every so often you retire one of the three to storage and rebuild one in it's place. Juide_Sock Posted July 21, 2024 Author Posted July 21, 2024 Alright, Thank you so much! @Yoggington Quote
Yoggington Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 I'm in an apartment at the moment, so the same issue. (House by Christmas though, woot). I've settled on fitting 2.5 modulars on the top of a Ikea Kallax unit. You could fit three, but it'd be edge to edge. The other thought I'd have would be to have very high shelves. E.G. running right around the top of the wall two foot shy of the ceiling. Might be a bit cluttered up there though. Quote
Murdoch17 Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 @Juide_Sock I would be careful putting heavy Lego modulars on wall shelves, to be honest. Unless you REALLY secure it into the wall and use heavy duty shelves, it won't work. I've seen too many aftermath videos of such shelving collapsing and the carnage that comes afterward. Doing something like what @Yoggington has done is probably the safest bet - the top of a small freestanding bookcase or something like that. Quote

Expand I don´t know what kind of shelfes those people you are speaking of are using, but normal books shelfes should hold Lego just fine, as books weigth more than modular buildings do. Also many of the videos of collapsing shelfes have kids involved or other accidents. Quote

Anything not supported properly / screwed into the wall with underside supports is a recipe for disaster... unless you get a bookshelf. This avoids wall mounted shelves altogether! Quote

Murdoch17 Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 (edited) I have two engineers in my family (one built his own benchwork for their model railroad, the other builds shelving / and boxes out of wood for their Lego. Both were overengineered and will out last me!), and they both warned me about those not working forever. You do you, though @Berthil.... Edited July 21, 2024 by Murdoch17 Quote
SpacePolice89 Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 I have built a large shelf under the ceiling for my Space display, something similar could be done for modulars. I have used Elfa shelves to support it. I have attached smaller builds directly to the walls (with no damage to the pieces but it has to be built so it supports itself also) Nowadys I try to only use glass cabinets for new displays (because of dust) Quote
Lion King Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 I have built two cupboards I bought from IKEA in 2021. Then I got into Modular Buidling Colletion in 2023. They take up space in both cupboards so FAST (I built Boutique Hotel, Bookshop, Police Station, Jazz Club and Downtown Diner). I just get two widest buildings (Assembl Square and Natural History Museum). I feel I will put two 1.5 Modular’s on the bottom shelves while the normal modular buildings on upper shelves. Also, my stepsister sent me a pic of her coach’s husband’s modular buildings. He had collected SEERAL and it looks like he builts a “island” in middle of basement, which I love his idea! Oh and I’m not apartment owner but I am liviing with my sister so i have similiar issues with you. Quote
JesseNight Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 @SpacePolice89 I don't know if this shows as much in reality, but I love on that last picture how the background reflects on the top shelf! Makes me wonder if some reflective foil could make an interesting water surface. Quote

I planned to use blue baseplates but decided not to because of that effect. Quote
