I agree entirely, it's just if LEGO really needs some narrative for a Futuron 3, Space Police 4, Blacktron 3 theme, they could perhaps stike a balance by just having a few tie-in games or cartoons like how Chase McCain isn't really neccecary to LEGO City (not narrative to the degree of stuff like Ninjago).  Don't do much more than set generalities like dropping a few planet names and a bit of geography.

Yes, the Chase McCain style would be a good compromise. Lego City Undercover is a very fun game and I actually finished the campaign a couple of days ago.

@Mandalorianknight, this is @danth's favorite conspiracy theory. Just let it be.

A "conspiracy theory" confirmed by actual Lego employees, all the evidence, and common sense. Also, don't blame me for responding when someone else brought this back up, and you called the obvious reality a "conspiracy theory". :D

Dude, Lego Harry Potter ran alongside castle sets for a decade. Lego Castle was already in the grave when the theme came back.

Time passes, things change, Lego decides over time to have less and less in-house themes competing with licensed. The situation in 2010 is different than today.

Also Chima and Nexo nights were the in house continuation (or replacement) of Castle. And those did go away precisely when Harry Potter sets came back. And we haven't had a Castle-like theme since.

The licensed themes destroyed the in house themes slowly, it was "death by a thousand cuts". Only Star Wars had a more immediate effect on Space because of the legal stuff.

Yay someone who actually gets it!

But anyway. Don't anyone blame me for this discussion. It was over, and then someone decided to dredge it up again. :)

There have been a handful of brief comments in passing by former employees that support the theory, but I don't think there's enough weight of evidence to confirm the theory beyond a reasonable doubt.

It wasn't me who said that. I only replied to to mandalorianknight who said it. I agree with you.

Weird! Don't worry, I knew you were agreeing with me, something must have went wrong with my quote. No idea how that happened because I don't remember quoting anything manually. I'm going to manually fix the quote now though.

Yup too much licensed themes to pay licensing fees for.

Apologies for this but I accidentally stumbled on this today and I HAD to post it. Another former Lego employee confirms the Star Wars meant Lego couldn't do Space themes. The following is a comment by Suzanne Eaton on a Bricknerd article about Rock Raiders.

Quote

I can see why collectors would want to categorize RR under Space. However, I worked for LEGO R&D at that time. I also managed the LUGNET set database at home. LEGO had acquired the Star Wars license, which I believe restricted them from continuing with Space as it had been. RR was part of a theme that was internally named “Underground.” A future wave of sets were to be called Magma Mites. They lived in molten caverns and had flame-shaped heads (which would have been the first departure from traditional head shape). Our team pitched heavy mining equipment with electronics built in and a computer-control tie-in for this sub-theme. But it was a difficult era for LEGO and Underground was killed off. If you search through retailer catalogs of that time, you may be able to find evidence of Underground.

Here's the video where I learned about this, with some additional context.

Ok, there's another quote that supports the idea that Star Wars blocked Space for the duration of the first license period. I'm still not convinced about the second, third, or fourth license periods.

Yeah, think it's fair to say it was likely true for the first period, it's a question for all subsequent ones, and of course whatever agreements they did have would have also been altered I imagine after the big shift in management when George Lucas sold his company.

If there was some embargo now I doubt it's because of movies because they haven't released a movie in years! I think the belief that Space themes are worked around SW movies doesn't work. If I were gonna give the most benefit of the doubt belief on how SW could still be a factor in a direct way then the most plausible theory for the timeline of this would be initially this was a part of their agreement, later renegotiations dropped this, then maybe once Disney became a factor the new negotiations put a similar limitation on them as there's not been any space theme after the Disney merger room affect for LEGO after a good few years of consistent Space themes from 2007 to 2013. Not enough evidence to say it with any conviction but that makes more sense to me then a wishy washy "can't release in a year with a movie unless it's animated" thing.

Still more like than not it's just an indirect effect of LEGOs priorities changing over time

The thing is all the confirmations are just for the time after the release of Star Wars, while the evidence shows that those agreements changed with time.

Looks like there will be two new classic space colours in the Ideas minifigure gumball machine. Teal and Gold. Curious. I wonder how many figures will be in it total? They're doing two castle figures in there too.

Damn. It thought I called it for sure: the gold spaceman would absolutely win. But then they go and do something surprising, and pick two winners.

Teal is Dark Turquoise on Bricklink right?

Happy to see my choice in the vote won, and I’m grateful TLG ended up picking two. My guess is that the vote counts for teal and pearl gold were too close that they decided to please the majority overall. After all, almost no one brought up lime, dark pink, or bright light blue.

I cautiously anticipate the devastating price tag.

Gold was a terrible choice, voters. Never mind, they picked 2 options anyway. Thankfully the motorcycle helmet is now available in dark turquoise (it is however printed) so I can do a full custom Futuron with airtanks! The gold helmet is not cheap.

I like to think gold was rigged from the get go as it was probably intended to be in CMF 26 as a one in all boxes sort of thing much like the Classic Town cop or the Highwayman and not like Mr. Gold but they decided to put the gold spaceman in the vote as putting it in the expensive set would make it more valuable. Though I don't know why they didn't add the light blue spaceman to the vote as the set it was supposed to come in is now canceled. Well at least we'll get the turquoise spaceman as a bonus and replacement for the scrapped spaceman from that set.

I think it was, in a way, since nobody wants bile or fuchsia, and the blue vote was split.

What set was that?

Well the Gold & Light Blue were at the bottom of my list.  THe Fushia was my first choice followed by the Bluish Green then the Lime.  Gold is boring to me unless they go ahead & make Silver & Titanium also.  At least I'll be getting the Bluish Green.

Did not expect teal, but will take that over the magenta...

Aren't they doing a Kraken fig?

I wanted a light blue to match that color on Everyone is Awesome. Lime and Teal were on my list!!! Magenta is somewhat close to the dark pink we already have.

For some reason, people liked warm gold. I always thought it wasn't as fantastic as the rest. But that helmet might be quite useful. Agree, they should next make a silver or even a pearl dark gray one!!! Maybe in a regular CMF?

It was the Game Island Tower set from the Dreamzzz line.

Now I could not get over the fact that we could have had that bright light blue spaceman! Also it seemed that the Game island Tower included some navy blue space suit - so it could have contained the missing helmet and air tanks for a dark blue spaceman!!! Bummer!!!
