Uh oh, watch out! Blacktron is at it again! -
Here's Garry, introducing the Variable Exploration Craft model 3, nicknamed "Rhino", though more for its slight resemblance to a rhinoceros beetle (and its appropriately somewhat clumsy flight capabilities) than anything to do with the majestic large african mammal, but don't tell him that. Note the tail fins in the back. There's more to this than you might think. The basis for this build was the legs, in particular the way they connect to the body involving these parts. I feel like I got lucky with how sturdy this turned out to be, as unsupported single-stud connections can be incredibly delicate and fiddly, especially as far as moving parts are concerned. ...though the stability of the rear wheel connection seems to depend entirely on the individual tolerances of those stud/half-pin parts and how well they hold a bar through the pin end; I went through a few before finding some that held well enough. There's almost certainly a better way to do this. Everything I build needs some kind of flexible joint, now in the form of moving legs/suspension for tough terrain. When the terrain is too tough, the VEC-3 can take to the air! During the build, I thought the legs looked kind of like a quadcopter when they were spread out like this, so I worked in a simple transformation feature. I feel like I'm scuttling around like a... um... the phrase escapes me, but you get what I mean. [Lu] - Yeah, I think they were meant for space mechs. CLAPPIE is still learning about RL... stuff. [Hannibal] - Everything okay, Lu? Your breathing rate and body language indicate that something is wrong. [Lu] - How much do you remember, John, I mean outside of the different skills you've been picking up? [Hannibal] - My first extraction had some general memories, like my name, who I worked for, what my job was, but nothing concrete to back it up. Most of what we've pulled through Kawashita's network has been skills based so that I can hunt down the rest of me, but there's not much behind them. I could tell you what color the lighthouse was off the Heinlein crater of Camp Promethei, but I only know second-hand that I had a family. Hell, I didn't know we were friends until CLAPPIE told me. [Lu] - Do you remember killing anybody? I mean, along with your combat training? [Hannibal] - Yeah. That's part of it. That and I've killed a dozen Zoids and some cyborgs since my extraction. I'm told my flight training killed a whole MANTIS death squad off Ertauq in cold blood, but I haven't synced up with those memories yet. [Lu] - Does it bother you, the killing? [Hannibal] - My combat training extraction came with some rules about when killing is appropriate, but I'm still not sure about the logic. Have I offended your sensibilities on the subject? [Lu] - No, no... I was just curious... Landscape used last week. - - - Outside a mining supervisor's quarters in the Fascini Cluster. Dora had secured the facility by stealing the supervisor's ship and cutting his suits oxygen supply when he tried to use his asteroid jumper. The latest upload contained locations of trapped memories within MANTIS and Kawashita networks, intel on most previously held Octan systems, and John's personal profiles of the Octan employees he would need to extract his files. [Hannibal] - Upload complete, Dora. I think I know a friend that can get me some decent legs now. We'll pick up my flight training on the way. [Dora] - That sounds wonderful, John. It'll be so nice to see more of your friends again. [Hannibal] - There was a system missing from the file, Jurin II. Know anything about it? [Dora] - It must have been a significant file if it was split from the main; but no, I don't have anything on it and many of the Octan employees that were stationed on Jurin II died in the Mantis invasion. Maybe Mabel will know something. It looks like she's on Donwarr...

[MANTIS Comm Officer] "Around midnight two days ago, sir. We only found it because the red alert slowed down our processors and somebody looked into the active programs to alleviate the traffic. "At first we thought Agent Ajuy downloaded something he wasn't suppose to during his 'leisure' time, but it's movement was too sophisticated, like it had a mind of it's own." [Agricultural Department Director] "But you were able to isolate the program?" [Officer] "Yes sir, to this drive... "But IT has asked us not to open it" [Director] "I didn't plan to. What'd they say was on it?" [Officer] "We're still not certain, but it follows the pattern of some of our interrogation uploads and included images of trees, octopi, and resistance fighters on Jurin II. Still doesn't explain the movement through our mainframe or why anybody would even care about such outdated intel." [Director] "Probably just some malware trying to get a hold of intel. I'll dispose of this, but tell the men to keep an eye out for more migratory files..." [Officer] "But sir, the..." [Director] "You are dismissed, officer. Return to your post."

Location: Forring - F03 Tags: Vehicle, Land Vehicle Famed Octan inventor, Zaael, graciously accepted Executive John Hannibal's request for a new pair of legs and waited to meet Hannibal between jobs on Forring. Install would be easy based on the specs CLAPPIE sent over, but their rendezvous required some secrecy on the technically MANTIS planet. [Zaael] - You know I'm here for you anytime, John. I'm sorry your stuck in such a sad state of affairs, but I hope you know that I'll do anything I can to help you out. [H] - Yeah, I do know that. Just let me know how I can return the favor. [Z] - Meh. So, where to now? [H] - I still have to link up with my flight programing patrolling over Ertauq, but that'll be easy in this new interface CLAPPIE designed. Then Hombre and I have some wetwork planned on Donwarr. [Z] - Damn John, you know you died on Donwarr? [H] - Yeah... It's something we've got to do. Hombre is a consummate professional, he'll see us through. CLAPPIE says they've all but eliminated the Zoid problem and freed all of the slaves running the planet's infrastructure, like that lighthouse ahead." Few times ago, the Professor Thaum landed his shuttle, arriving on the request of the head scientist of the station... the last ice boulder retrieved just arrived and according to all the sensors there's something else than mithril inside. The time has come, the harvesting procession start the engines and are going to leave the base. It's also time to rerun all the sensors actives devices, the ionisation of the northern Freegate's atmosphere, following daybreak and issuing with polar aurora will blind all MANTIS scanning possbility for 7h 58m 13s . Location: F02 - Lesser Drigo Tags: Vehicle, Land Vehicle, Exploration, AG, Octan ++Eshey Reeshia Kolai, personal log, start recording++ Andromeda is steadily becoming developed, although some would say exploited instead. In any case, it's clear that the three major corporations are on a collision course as they expand towards each other's sphere of influence. Already there have been incidents, such as the discovery of a M.A.N.T.I.S. spy in one of our labs on Lesser Drigo (http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=111380), the disappearance of our robots, also on Lesser Drigo (http://www.eurobrick...owtopic=111350]), the hi-jacking of our biomass harvests on Jurin II (http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=111361), and a confrontation that resulted in the deaths of two Octan employees on Arium Major (http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=111267). Some within Octan have advocated for conflict while coolers heads have sought for more diplomatic solutions. My opinion is that we have enough problems with the dangerous fauna here in Andromeda and that we shouldn't have to worry about shadow conflicts with the other corporations. Already I have been attacked by an alien snow monster (http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=110681), and have preempted attacks by obliterating alien cactus monsters (http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=110932). I don't even believe how I was able to survive the last mission when an alien was eating my spaceship while I was still in orbit (http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=111341[/url]), but that is a story for another log. And this just as a temp. As much as I want a permanent position at Octan...you know, job security and benefits and all that...I'm afraid of the type of assignments I'd get as one. The good news is that there appears to be elements within the Kawashita corporation that are open to cooperation with Octan. While a formal press release has not been put out officially stating that our companies are cooperating, unofficial inter-corporate events have been sponsored to foster good will. Maybe...just maybe, these will lead to official collaborations between Kawashita and Octan. My mentor, Pombe, has...how shall I put this...graciously sacrificed himself to attend a "meet and greet" with an all female...and all absolutely gorgeous...Kawashita sales and marketing team. Octan is hosting the event on the tropical paradise of Jurin II. He even sent a picture to show how hard he's working. He serves as a great example for us all.... As for me, I've been assigned to meet with Kawashita engineer, Alexander Vandangant, and inter-corporate relations officer, Ava Gato. We are lucky that Alexander was available at all, considering how busy he was setting up a Kawashita geology lab on Marden (http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=111650), but he was able to make time in his schedule to come all the way out to the Axle. Fortunately, that cutie Big Z will be with me as Alexander showcases his latest design in robotics engineering. Who needs a tropical paradise when you've got him around, right? Location: H08 - Sinden's Run Tags: Vehicle, Land Vehicle, Spaceship, Exploration, AG, Octan ++Pombe, personal log, start recording++ I have just returned from an extensive and exhausting meeting with one of Kawashita's sales and marketing teams on Jurin II, where we spent the entire time debriefing one another. As tired as I was, however, I wanted to meet with Eshey to go over what she has accomplished while I was away. Ava Gato, the Kawashita inter-corporation relations officer, was also on hand, apparently having accompanied Eshey on her assignments. Ava spent the meeting emphasizing how difficult Eshey was to work with, using the word "hard" several times to describe my apprentice. I can't help but agree with her, given Eshey's penchant to suspect that every living thing she encounters on her assignments to be dangerous. I will consult with Big Z on how to help Eshey deal with her issues. Unfortunately for us, Ava was being called back by her superiors. She wished us well and headed back to Kawashita space in her personal starfighter. Eshey and I met with Big Z to see what his solution to Eshey's problem was. His solution was as elegant as it was brilliant. He's always someone I can count on when I need help or advice. He came up with a personal exploration vehicle that uses chemicals that when combined can be used to cryogenically freeze living things. Dr. Long won't have much to complain about much longer! I decided to send Eshey to H08, or Sinden's Run, an asteroid belt rich with awesomnium, for her next assignment and to test Big Z's new vehicle. I would have liked to join her, but I was barely able to walk from all the debriefing I did with Kawashita's sales and marketing team, so I decided to stay aboard the Axle to recuperate. Her report from Sinden's Run indicated that she landed and explored one of the larger asteroids, and was successful in finding awesomnium. Additionally, she encountered little rock like aliens, which when she instinctively pulled the trigger on her weapon, were frozen instead of obliterated, unlike in her past assignments. These were collected, and I hope Dr. Long will be pleased. ++Pombe, personal log, stop recording++ Next: More pics under the spoiler tag. Location: F02 - Lesser Drigo Tags: F02 Lesser Drigo, MANTIS, Spying, Civil Building, land vehicle AG: Mission S-F02 - Waterbug by David FNJ, on Flickr Double D's log 5: After being dropped off by Isaac Redsyn I dove into one of the cracks amidst the dry surface of the dry planet of Lesser Drigo. This particular gap in the ground was about a gunshot away from a lava flow. Presuming Octan had also found this water treasure I swam what felt like downstream until I found it - a water collection device thingy (yeah, I know, my major is not in engineering either...). Pulling out my micro-tracking devices (MTDs), I let them get sucked up by the water device one by one. I wish I could get a look at the top - I'd probably see Octan robots doing most of the work. The location information provided by these MTDs will provide MANTIS with other key locations in case we, uh, nevermind. ~ DD out The spoiler includes extra blacklight shots, close-ups of the underwater landscape, the Octan water processing plant, the working crane, and the water transportation vehicle. --------------------------------------- Man, this MANTIS stuff is a blast! I got to experiment with adding the dark green 1x1 bricks in the rockwork to give the rockwork some noticeable strata. The crane works quite well, and the rubber band is there to keep the water containers from slipping out easily. The water transportation vehicle turned out quite nicely with the suspension and being able to snap back to its normal position because of the rubber band and also to give the wheels a little bit of resistance when going over a bump.

Location: F02, Lesser Drigo Tags: MANTIS, spying, land vehicle Double D's log 33: Upon arriving on Lesser Drigo I was sent into one of Octan's facilities that had many Octan servers. I was given a simulator device to put into one of the Octan servers that would then copy itself onto the system and then copy itself onto any other connected servers in a subtle manor. The key, invisibility. Of course, I had a sweet getaway vehicle, and it's the fastest one yet! ~ DD out

Location: F03, Forring Tags: MANTIS, Land Vehicle, Military Double D's Log 37: So since I've been around a while, some of MANTIS corp. wanted me to look at some new experimental vehicles. There were lots of excellent ones, but one in particular stood out to me. It looked liked an ancient battle wheel or something. Sure it could truck through just about anything, but its defenses were disgraceful. Any hover bike could zoom around it and immobilize the thing. Anyway, I gave it a grade of E (in the A-F scale). ~ DD out ----------------------------------------- So yeah, I'm not exactly happy with this, I had something cooler in mind, but I didn't have the time to do it. The wheels turned out pretty cool, and it's amusing to roll around and shoot at things, but it just doesn't look that good to be honest. Still, I had fun with the time I was able to spend on it, and that's all that counts right?

Location: E02 Time: 0900 hours Tags: Land Vehicle, Spying Octan has decided to transfer highly sensitive information by a fast and lightly guarded speeder. Fortunately MANTIS Secret agents knew this and were lying in wait. The MANTIS agents laid a trip wire to flip the speeder. As an extra precaution, the trap location is surrounded by additional armed MANTIS agents. [imagine that this now is the other side of the wire.] The speeder flipped over the wire, broke apart and caught fire. The orders were clear: eliminate all enemy units. MANTIS HQ never said we couldn't set the jungle on fire, though. Agent Sally takes the suitcase with highly sensitive information. The valuable information is of course the whole reason for this trap.
