Bionicle 2009 Images and Discussion

In addition to what others have said, here are some quotes from the Turaga, paraphrased: EDIT: Vakama's "I'm waiting for the arrival of another..." sounds to me too mysterious to just be referencing another Toa Mata. If this was something said by Greg, remember he wasn't involved at all in the MNOG. ;-) I'll see if I can find more. =P -Ikk -

In a few days, according to 81NK. -Ikk -
Last one'd be Kopaka and the next will hopefully be Berix and Vorox when they arrive from S@H. Shame on me for missing out so much on non-Bionicle themes. =P -Ikk

The Piraka characters still annoy me, but 2006 was really a love-hate year for me. On one side, we had fantastic tropes such as the treasure hunt for life, the desolate and somewhat spooky island, and the Matoran resistance. On the other hand, the characters were just trying too hard to break the mold in many places -- the Piraka were basically nothing but snide remarks, Dalu was a pain, and Velika's cool riddles were totally ruined by Garan. Still, folks such as Piruk and Balta as well as the interaction of Axonn and Brutaka provided both new and deep personality types. As far as sets go, the canister ones mostly sucked, with the exception of transparency and Piraka colors. The villagers and A & B were terrific, though. 2006 remains very hard to decide on. -Ikk -

You mustn't let yourself miss out on the many wonders of the 2007 story. City of the Lost especially revived much of the classic greatness of Bionicle, and it bettered the many letdown aspects of 2006. There was a city of Matoran struggling to survive in a hostile location... the threat of Rahi all around... mysterious enemies who actually ruled nature... and the exploration of a tiny group of ressourceful villagers per decree of their village council. =D It was good times. BTW, despite the less-than-bare glimpses we've gotten of him, Gar remains my favorite post-Metru Nui character. -Ikk -

I genuinely missed the Matoran's point of view in 2008... stories about superheroes and supervillains quickly get tiresome and repetitive. However, with the exception of the early years, 2007 by far the year with the most focus on the Matoran. It had an entire book where they alone were the central characters, they had nontraditional and developed personalities, and they even got a serial where they served important purposes. Outside of the Mata Nuians the Mahri Nui Matoran are my favorite Bionicle characters. -Ikk -

One of the countless things I've enjoyed about the MNOG is the vast collection of future story hints placed in the game -- it gives clues to Metru Nui, Mata Nui's death, Mata Nui being the universe, the domes, Takanuva, the Red Star, and probably more! Along with the Amaja Legend, it is to date the single most encompassing source of hints to the mysteries of Bionicle! -Ikk -

On that subject -- it seems as if Bara Magna and Spherus Magna were named by the same beings, just as the number six is prevalent bothwhere. Perhaps the GBs had some influence on Bara Magna in the distant past? Oh, and one more thing: This is why Bionicle wins. No other story has anything that can match the Great Beings on any level. -Ikk -

Good news for Danish Bionicle fans: The 2009 sets weren't available through S@H here in Denmark, so I sent LEGO a mail asking when they'd be. In response, they made 'em available! =D And I love the Great Beings, and I love Paradise. Completely got a druid-like feel from the GBs in their chamber. Also, the presense of just six GBs is interesting... could it be that it is their full number and the source of the omnipresence of the number six in the MU? -Ikk -

New comic AND DID9? What a morning! DID was pretty much nothing but dullness, though, nothing new revealed, just more babble about the scale of evil of Makuta's plan... The comic, however, was great. The dynamic and and the charismatic postures reminded me of the old Dragon Ball manga, a long-time favorite of mine. The variety of the plot and the many different scenarios were great, even if the flow of the story was somewhat disrupted by the incessant explaining of stuff in the dialogue. The characters were better developed than I had dared hope, and Strakk and Tarix were drawn with such life I can't help but love them now -- plus we have non-set villagers again! Also, finally, we get something I have missed since the days of Metru Nui: a mysterious villain behind the scenes! I love Bara Magna. -Ikk -
Worst ever Bionicle design.

Haha, no, I was actually refering to BZP. I enjoy swapping opinions with people who hold vastly different views than meself -- and I can definitely see where you're coming from with many of those points! I'm curious, though, what do you think of the 2009 stuff we've seen so far? -Ikk -

The only thing that the Metru had in common with the Mata was the humanoid appearance. Everything else, from the colors to the construction to the style was different. And it sounds as if by mechanical you mean set functions -- yes, they sadly got rid of those, since constructing them was too hard for the target audience. =/ I strongly miss those too, and let it be clear that I *loved* the Bohrok and Rahkshi like nothing else. Launchers sell better though, and set functions ARE present in the large 2008 vehicle sets. Story-wise, I always found the comics confusing too. XD Maybe I'm biased since I've followed every year zealously and have enjoyed both the days of simplicity and intricateness. Obviously it can't be that much of a problem since Bionicle is still going strong and there are heated story debates in many a place. -Ikk -

... are you seriously comparing every post-Bohrok set to the squid? XD Mechanical aspect in sets? Abundant in the Metru. Story? Easy to follow and get into up 'til around 2007. Giant pieces? Definitely, but most are not useless. -Ikk -
