Motorised as in the wheels are motorised so that it moves. I have the original one from 1997 (the one with the cool box!).

Now now, lets be civil here and not start another VS style debate, we must offer balanced opinion hear and stay on topic, I mean, i'm sure LAs can be good for something, like.....um.....powerful, no wait that's not right, ok....um.....fast, no wait that's not right either, ok.....um......realistic, oh I give up! Your gonna love it! I might set aside a couple hours to build mine later. One other thing is that there are instructions to replace the v6 with a 9v geared motor, giving you motorised 4WD. Can't think of another set that has that off the top of my head.

Personally, i'de get 8439 It has all the same functionality of 8265 but IMO does what it does in a much better way and the whole design just seems much more thought out. The steering is not heavy or flimsy like it is in 8265, and the steering wheel works too. It has 4WD and a V6 engine, like the 8265, and there is no need to endlessly turn a crank until your fingers wear down! Motorisation of the 8265 is an added cost not needed of the 8439 and the end result is a loader that can't lift as much as 8439. 8265 does have a nice amount of complexity tho, but this is one of the very rare cases where it seems to be complex only for the sake of complexity, but that's just my opinion

8258 is awesome, not as good as the unimog, but still awesome. -
Metal axles for lego
allanp replied to habit's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Alternatively you can greatly reduce the load on longer axles by having them spin at much higher speed but with more gearing down at the end. -

Lego organisation update

I don't have much room, not enough for a desk with lots of little drawers, so I have about 20 of these things: http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=11247811&fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories%3C{9372015}/categories%3C{9372043}/categories%3C{9372178}/categories%3C{9392071}/specificationsProductType=organisers The little drawers would be better, but if you don't have the room, these are great. -

Looks fantastic so far, love the extending boom, compressor design also looks very promising. -
Longer Pneumatics
allanp replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It is done! Well I posted something somewhere anyway -
Hey there, I know this is a little off topic, but it relates to another thread so I didn't want to start yet another thread. Anywho, over in the technic, mindstorms and model team forum there is a thread discussing the possibility of longer pneumatics. We have discussed what we would like and now we are discussing actually making them. We need someone with the capability to design and produce complex plastic moulded pieces that would intergrate seemlessly with lego with a very high level of accuracy. Do you think that (presuming there were enough orders made before hand to make it worth their while of course) brickarms would be willing to help us out? If they can then feel free to join the discussion over in the longer pneumatics thread as I do not wish to hijack this one. Thankyou.

Longer Pneumatics
allanp replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is why I think we need to talk to brickarms as they do have molds made and their parts look like they are on a par with Lego almost. However they would also need to produce the longer steel shaft. The seals and so on may be recyclable from standard pneumatics. All this is dependent on weather or not we actually need prototypes. I'de much rather have Lego produce them. -
Set 8436 pneumatic truck.

Honestly, take away the pneumatics and this truck is probably one of the worst flagships ever! -

Just had a thought. Brickarms make custom Lego parts to a very high quality right? Maybe they could help us. Are there any other companies like them? -
Longer Pneumatics
allanp replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is an appeal for AFOLs in need. Poor Alasdair has slipped with a knife whilst trying to make a longer pneumatic and is bleeding over everything. Just one e-mail to Lego demanding longer pneumatics can make a difference, so please get typing, or type whatever you can, and help end this madness. Give a crazy scotsman a knife, and he will stab himself, give a crazy scotsman a longer pneumatic, and he'll still have fingers to build lego with, for a whole life time. So please, start typing today. Thankyou. -

Longer Pneumatics
allanp replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, easy peasy! Thanks. Remember the current one has a stroke of only about 3.5, so this one actually has a stroke of slightly more than 2 large pneumatic cylinders put together. The reason for not making it 3 studs wide is because it would take up unnecessary space. You can always add bushes either side to make it functionally wider. I figure making the base only 1 stud wide make it more versatile. The reason for making it 7.5 in lenght was because retracted the ram is 11 studs in total which is a whole number in length. To make it 7 or 8 would either not use the full space available or make the retracted length not a whole number in length. That's a possibility with enough money, but i'de rather pursuade TLG to make them as a proper part for future sets. As part if that I wonder if somebody would be willing to make an Ldraw version so that we could demontrate their usefulness in actual lego models at the sort of size and piece count they like to make official lego sets, both small and large. I imagine many places where these would be great, like a small forklift truck or skip lorry or container truck or crane or larger excavators or front end loaders or back hoes and so on. C'mon technic team I know you're reading this -
Longer Pneumatics
allanp replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
So, the average length of stroke people asked for turned out to be about 7.5 lego units (assuming barmans illustration showed a stroke of around 12.5 lego units). So here is pretty much what our new cylinder looks like: Here we have added 4 lego units in length, increasing the retracted hole centre to hole centre distance from 6 lego units to 10 lego units, and the extended hole centre to hole centre distance from about 9.5 lego untis to about 17.5 lego units. This equates to slightly more than double the size of the stroke of the current standard cylinder. The other change is to modify the mounting point at the bottom end of the cylinder to make it more suitable for studless construction techniques. I have not added any more points midway up the cylinder as I could not get them to not distract from the overall look of the cylinder. In addition, making them both strong, and small so they don't keep getting in the way was proving very difficult. However, as some have shown an interest in them we can always mention it to TLG as something else to consider. So chaps! If we are agreed that this is what we want (speak up now if you want further changes) I guess the next thing is to decide, what next? Is cuusoo the best solution? Or is there a better way? -
Longer Pneumatics
allanp replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A telescopic one would be great, but unlikely because they would not be as useful in as many different situations. Besides I think they are only single acting, meaning air will force it to extend, but an external force is needed (ie the weight of the tipping bed) to retract it.
