  1. I would try to connect the Astronomy Tower/Viaduct Entrance so that it's angled across from the Great Hall, maybe using the archway from the Womping Willow as a substitute for the Stone Bridge. Kind like this.
  2. With a bit of re--arranging I managed to put the Clocktower on the other side of the Great Hall and get a more enclosed "loop" look. Kind of strange on the Womping Willow side, but hopefully improved when the Astronomy Tower can be added.
  3. My theory is that Whomping Willow provided the perfect medium-sized set that parents could buy as a gift for their kids who were Harry Potters fans, without having to break the bank on one of the more expensive castle sets like the Great Hall. Parents: "Look Little Danny, we bought you Hogwarts Castle, just like you asked!" Little Danny: "I was hoping for the UCS, but this will have to do."
  4. Great review! I am curious what the combined Hogwarts Layout looks like with the modular pieces re-arranged. For instance how does it look with the Clock Tower on the opposite side of the Great Hall (instead of attached to the Whomping Willow set), with the Yule Ball section sandwiched in between.
  5. As Graupensuppe posted, there's no exact canonical arrangement since there's still a lot of the castle that isn't represented (and probably never will be). Roughly, the Clock Tower should be arranged behind the Great Hall, at a 45 degree angle, achievable with the hinged modules on Yule Ball module. If the Whomping Willow modules are kept attached to the Great Hall set (instead of on the other side of the grounds like on the map) and a future Hogwarts Castle set includes another small tower and wall piece, it could complete the Quad that lies between the Great Hall and the Clocktower.
  6. Disappointing that there's no official image of the combined caste sets, but not surprising considering that all pretty much all of the Press Release images had already leaked.
  7. Love the return of the Clocktower (my favorite Hogwarts location in the films)! Can't wait to see how it looks connected to the Great Hall and Whomping Willow sets.
  8. Also, Since Lego already released a extremely movie-accurate (albeit incomplete) model in this series, I wouldn't be surprised if they were less concerned about matching the movie castle too faithfully with their playsets. Based on the Womping Willow model and what we've been told so far about the Clocktower, the playsets seem to leans more towards general representations of Hogwarts castle based on certain iconic castle elements (towers, walls, clock towers), without necessarily a specific one-to-one match with the movie model . The fact that the Yule Ball is taking place in the clock tower and not the Great hall already tells us that the play sets are going to be very liberal with representation.
  9. This minifig list changes everything I had assumed about this set. I had assumed it was the Hogwarts Clock Tower. But since that location is mainly featured in Prisoner of Azkaban, why would it contain so many Goblet of Fire characters? It makes more sense that this set is the viewing platform from the 2nd Task on the lake. That platform is literally a watchtower (where someone can watch the second task from) and a clock tower (the clock counts down the time left for the challenge). It fits both descriptions much better than the Hogwarts Clock Tower.
  10. Fantastic work. It's cool to see all your different takes on the same locations throughout your various Hogwarts dioramas (Dumbledore's office, Gryfindor common room, DAtDA Classroom). Each version is unique while still containing the essential identifying details.
  11. You should post some pics! (though maybe in their own MOC thread, not this one)
  12. Why would it go under the great hall? I get that it's supposed to be subterranean, but it's not accurate to the films or books for it to go there. It could just as well go under any part of the castle. It went under the Great Hall in the original 2001-2002 line but that changed the shape of the chamber to a hallway, having the two chamber walls run next to each other instead of parallel, across from each other.
  13. Thanks for the new pics, VBBN! Yup, she sure looks like a giantess in those pics. Although the Viaduct Entrace is a large enough building that it almost works for her scale.
  14. I'm curious to see people's attempts to Mod the set for Minifigs. I wish the reviewer had included a couple shots showing the scale of Minifigs inside or outside the set. I know they probably look humongous but it would still be interesting to see, especially given that the figure scale was the biggest source of debate over the set.
  15. I would also add 5. The set is open-back so adding the rest of the castle to the rear would restrict access to the interior. Looking forward to seeing how the fans do their own mods to complete the castle themselves.
  16. What exactly are people meaning by Minifig-scale? Are we talking 1-1 scale like UCS Millennium Falcon? Or more like Disney Castle or Tower of Orthanc where the exterior is one scale, and the interior is vignette-scale, with very small rooms? Hogwarts Castle is a HUGE building, and all versions done to date (including the latest Great Hall set) have majorly sacrificed the architectural detail and scale for the sake of making them minifig-accommodating play-sets. I'm curious how they could design a properly detailed Hogwarts with minifig-sized rooms that didn't end up looking like this monster (impressive but outrageous as an actual set).
  17. The long viaduct is only in those two films so maybe they wanted to go with a design that better represents how it's portrayed in the majority of the movies. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of that viaduct design change in the first place.
  18. The sections in red are what are represented in this set, so there are still lots of areas that could be added on. (this map represents Hogwarts from Goblet of Fire, before the Defense Against the Dark Towers was replaced with the Astronomy tower)
  19. Doesn't look like they cut out the middle. The viaduct entrance with the four spires on the right side is all there. What's missing is everything to the right of that-- the "Cathedral" section with the big middle tower and the two bell towers on the very right.
  20. Love the design, they really nailed the scale and proportions and a lot of the architectural details. The minifig-scale Great Hall from earlier this year looked kind of squashed. With this one, they basically copied the silhouette of Hogwarts from the Wizarding World parks, minus the Astronomy tower. So sadly no "cathedral", clock tower, or quads but I suppose that would have restricted the open back of the model and a lot of those sections aren't visible from the front anyway. It would probably take twice as many pieces to add those extra sections at the same level of detail. I've held out from every owning a LEGO Hogwarts set, waiting for them to release something that was more than just an allusion to the films' castle design and now 17 years later I think it's finally time to make a purchase
  21. Yeah, it looks like it's based off the back part of the castle (that was shot at Alnwick Castle), given the crenelations and the archway for the car to drive through.
  22. Looks like it's based on this tower/wall/arch section but they've cheated it so that it's ground level with the lake (the boat going under the arch) and the Hogwarts grounds (with the womping willow) beside it.
  23. After seeing some of the blurry pre-release pics, I was anticipating being let down, but this blows away my expectations. I love how it has a solid enough build that viewed from the right angle, it looks like a complete building, but at the same time has a full interior in the back. I wasn't expecting there to be such more detail in the interior, such as the inclusion of the alchemy room and study. The relics in the attic aren't accurate to the films or books (I'm fairly sure Saruman was being sarcastic when he mentioned the keys to the Two Towers and the rods of five wizards) but they're still a very cool detail. This is the kind of big set I hoped TLC would release when I heard they had the LOTR license. Hopefully there will be more like it.
  24. WhiteCat, I think the stone sculpture is supposed to be the head of Salazar Slytherin
  25. The major challenge I see is how could LEGO turn the massive buildings and locations in Middle Earth into affordable playsets.
