Creating instructions in Ldraw
freakwave replied to Erik Leppen's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
When working with LPub you need to get some feelings for it What I mean is that you need to know how it will interpret setting GLOBAL or LOCAL. The best thing is you experiment with the look and feel and then generate a template for LPUB that you re-use. This template should take care of all general settings, like fonts, colors, line sizes etc. i.e. like this: 0 !LPUB CALLOUT STEP_NUMBER FONT GLOBAL "Arial,36,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB MULTI_STEP STEP_NUMBER FONT_COLOR GLOBAL "#ffffff" 0 !LPUB MULTI_STEP STEP_NUMBER FONT GLOBAL "Arial,48,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB STEP_NUMBER FONT_COLOR GLOBAL "#ffffff" 0 !LPUB STEP_NUMBER FONT GLOBAL "Arial,48,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB PLI MODEL_SCALE GLOBAL 0.8000 0 !LPUB PLI ANNOTATE FONT GLOBAL "Arial,16,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB PLI INSTANCE_COUNT FONT GLOBAL "Arial,18,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB PAGE BACKGROUND GLOBAL COLOR "#dcdcff" 0 !LPUB PAGE SIZE GLOBAL 11.0000 8.5000 Re-using those they can easily be pasted into LPub. Preparing yourself with your preferred settings this will lead to great results, see Tagl's Brickshelf LPub can of course be better (e.g. adding measurements, 1:1 views), but it does a great job. I have seen a program called "LIC" but I could not get it to save instructions properly. I would prefer a marriage of those two! What LPub is missing in my opinion is the "Ghosting" and "Buffer Exchange" you need to do in MLCAD as Eric mentioned. Splat's Instructions are "Wow!" Those 1:1 call-outs cannot be done with LPub (I have to try what Eric has shown) and a very nicely sorted BOM is also not possible with LPub, so here manual work will lead to better BOMs -

[REVIEW] 9398 - Rock Crawler
freakwave replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great, great review! Thanks for that! And nice to see that one has already found its way across the pond! -
Hm, may be somebody could open his and take a picture of the driver-circuit like here: PF-IR-Receiver internals on Brickshelf Especially take note of the little guy with the "LB1836" printed on, respectively his replacement. Pictures are not mine but having opened oneby myself I can say that opening the IR-Receiver is not damaging it, there are four screws at the bottom. Very easy to disassemble and put together again. :-)

After reading about the availability of the Rock-Crawler I had to quickly drop by the LEGO-Store in the evening. Both the Helicopter and the Crawler were on the shelves. And they had even one assembled so it was hands on immediately. Unfortunately the batteries were quite weak already ... The thing looking like the "drive-train" is more or less the "steering-train" using the Unimog's parts for the drive-train (what a sentence). It virtually has not drive train as we already know the L-motors sit directly on the axles. Referring to allanp's comment on the proportional steering, I did not think of trying it in the store before I left, but I do not think it is possible. Would have been a good idea to check it with a train-remote which produces a "proportional" signal. Colorwise I find it quite pleasing, the orange accents work well and add another source of orange Technic-Parts (also connectors) to the line. Accessibility to batteries and on/off switch is ok. The door-lock is a simple but intriguing solution, I like it. You need to open one of them to switch on the battery-pack. Construction feels very sturdy. ...and no, I did not buy them yet... but birthday's coming soon and I still do have a -20% voucher for Legoland... fW

Same here: - I also wondered about the two left over Boat Studs, went over the instructions several times as my son (8) build that part of the plane and I thought he might have missed them, but finally the BOM list only 6 which are in the model - The movement of the elevators is somewhat restricted in the downwards direction. however if you tweak with it, the rubber band does not pull it in a neutral position. - Some Dark Tan plate I am going to replace with more color matching parts, i.e. black, tan or dk green. Overall it is a great model, from the looks, from the build! Awesome, great attention to details like the footrest to get into the plane. BUT the interesting design detail it the engine that rotates with the propeller :-) and the original has 9 Cylinders, but let's not be picky It also has a nice selection of bricks, some only in this model like the Dark Tan 1 x 4 Brick fW

Roller coaster idea
freakwave replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hi Zblj, This weekend I was at LL Germany and guess what the "Fabrik" has in its bins! Yes, Connector 62462 in Red an White in huge quantities.... Cost is 9 EUR/100g so it is about 3,5 cents per piece. Having your idea in mind I took a few handful of them (of course not enough) and tried a small setup which is approximately 80 cm long. I am using the wheels I suggested and they are loosing of course more momentum than the train wheels, but I think it is bearable. May be add an acceleration section in the middle of the coaster, and a heavier car. The next thing would be a check how a looping would work out and what kind of acceleration it needs to go through it. fW -
I just came across this question now.... I had a discussion on 1000steine on this topic not long ago and I decided to do them as a quick exercise: Go to my Brickshelf folder and download the GIFs and XML, put them into the correct "parts" folder and hat should do the job. The correct GIF is not nice, so feel free to edit it properly :-) L2865 is with the correct angles, correct but crappy GIF K2865 is with the correct angles, incorrect but nicer GIF fW

Definitely nice pictures here and a small history lesson on the Imperial Gardens However a few questions remain: Did you make those bricks? What is the source? That information I feel is missing... fW Edit: I was able to get to your original Flickr page, but that was not straight forward! Provide a Link to your Flickr to share more of your work!

I have built a mechanism that works with counter-rotating wheels pretty well. It consists of two stages. The feeder with a LEGO rubber conveyor belt for a constant stream of balls and avoiding chocking the acceleration mechanism. And as a second stage the acceleration device, which is a RC-Motor geared up 1:5 and using the "Tire 30.4 x 14 VR" I does not look "pretty" in its current stage but I will look for some video I might be able to put here. fW

2h 2012 models
freakwave replied to TAFOL's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The Crawler looks really good! It seems we get another set having those: Hopefully reducing their price on BL or at leat plan them for the next LUGBulk... The L-Motor looks good and has nice attachement points. Sizewise it is 3 x 3 at the front and 5 x 3 in the back, lenght I guess is 7 studs. I wonder what the cut-outs at the Servo-Motor are good for? But finally a new servo since quite some time! fW -
Roller coaster idea
freakwave replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Zblj this is a great idea! Allowing for a twisting track, now you have to ask Sergio to allow this in SR3D Builder ! Part-wise it isn't too expensive, the joiners are ok and available in quantities (except you go with DkBlGrey which is only available as 75535..) I think that the wheel/axle solution you have put in is having a lot of friction. The axle needs to rotate but is, as far as I can see, vital for the structural building of the cars. I would try a non-axle hole wheel like the 42619: or the 56902: Both have the disadtvantage of the "groove" being relatively small. Looking forward for more! fW -
That is one beauty! I am not really into pirates, but I like ships of any kind (space, pirates etc ) The different decks and their equipment is stunning with the amount of detail included. love it! Also the "stand" respectively the sea you used for the presentation is a nice idea. btw: how long did it take you to do the rope-ladders? fW

And there is the video! Cool thing, the engine rotates with the propeller

The set we built had the third legs quite easily moving, so it dropped out smoothly when you push the lever. The ankle boxes in my opinion add stability when it stands on two legs, to pose it with three you anyway need to grab the with both hands. As I mentioned before it is not very swooshable, but adorable :-)

Correct, no wheels

I had the pleasure to take part in the Speed-Building event as well. As far as I could remember I can give this quick review: (sorry no Pics, but head over here at 1000steine to get a few pics of the events) - very big Box compared to the final result, i.e. the box is the size of the Space Shuttle - three instruction booklets, #1 the body, #2 all legs, #3 top and final assembly. - The body is quite a sturdy construction a lot of "Plate with one stud" are used to get the shape done - Due to the nearly symmetrical construction iit is very important to keep the head and body properly oriented, especially at the first steps there is only a slight difference, but that matters ;-) - The tools can be operated form the back (once the "doors" are opened) - The legs attachments are a bit wobbly in my opinion and this was not the result of the Speed-Building. - When sitting on the two legs the body rests on the two "rounded boxes" attached to the two main legs. It is pretty stable this way. - The third leg is released with a latch on the back of R2D2. It activates a ratchet mechanism where a 2L Liftarm locks into a row of Gear Racks. The leg falls down and R2 can now be posed - When moving the third leg up the ratchet is supposed to lock it, however due to the rather hasty assembly we had to operate the lever at the back to fix the third leg, I think it is intended to do this automatically (i.e. gravity and the smooth way LEGO axles operate when properly assembled) - It's good looking in my opinion BUT, NOT swooshable :-) much more suited for display purposes! - And I would like to see it next to the Technic Version in Real Life! fW

Oh, i like the idea of LEGO asking to remove the pictures just to provide you better ones :-) Looks very nice! What I do not like is the string across the signage on top of the wing, some improvement potential here. We get in black, a lot of strings with plates... Looking forward to it!

Modular Spacecraft [LDD MOC]
freakwave replied to vynsane's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
@vynsane, your ships are a great inspiration. I had myself plans to do a modular shuttle system and your renders will push me again into this direction. The system I wanted to do is intended to do transfers between planets and their satellites. i.e. Earth/Moon as an example. So they should have configurations like Earth-to-Orbit, Orbit-to-Orbit and Orbit-to-Moon, freight passenger etc. Let's see what comes! fW
