Looking up some videos on Crocodile trains for another project im working on, I came across the video for Der Koloss - or Big Boy... one of three made and still running around the Swiss Network (apparently). So a small challenge for anyone (I would love to do it - but have really no time). So the challenge would be for someone to design a PF or 12V equivalent of the A/E 8/14 of the SBB railroads. Warning: Heavy use of Dark Green plates could make this quite expensive. Wheels could also be from Big Ben... (and just for fun!)

Correct. Sometimes a good looking MOC does not need massive SNOT techniques, just the right idea. I do like the refinery - and was also working on a similar one; but time is not on my side. So I let you run with the idea... (actually I have most of the chrome elements for pipes). Link to original models

Why do you want to use two identical point sets? With opposing (left/right) this works... but the 'vertical' tracks (on your image) would be further apart by 8 studs... Cutting the plastic track is easy - cutting and soldering the tabs for the 12V rails would be harder
-
Very nice. I would also be happy to see these parked there.

Now im definitely reminded of St Erth, and the branchline to St Ives. Just a pity St Ives demolished its own station.

Would the front axles of the cart not normally be on a turntable? Then the parallel horses would be on a mini-cart (small wheels) and the 'front' wheels of the cart would turn just a little. Since the cart wheels are already wider than the 9V track, there might be just enough space on the tight curves? The other way would be to hide the PF-M motor inside which drives some wheel sets, using techniques of the driven bogeys / trucks often found at railbricks.com In the end this is a surperb idea... if you managed it with hidden track it would look really good. Well done.

As always Bricklink is your friend - and they are relatively cheap... I also have a load of spares from when I went on a 7939 Re-colouring binge... Both versions look good now. I somehow prefer the one with the clear windscreens - it looks more modern and realistic.
-
It looks good - but I suspect the windows are a little too low on the body for the mini-figs to look out of. You could also use some of the older cockpits (curved screen, often from the Junior series) to give it a real modern look. Link: Item 30633 Windscreen Canopy I look forward to watching photos / video in the coming weeks.

Well it is nice to see something fun working; and I wonder if it could also be a good GBC.

Argh yes; good old Spark Fun... just is pity it is not directly PF compatible. But with the right NXT adapter it would make a nice system and be nearly pure (for the Purists).

LEGO® CUUSOO 空想 - Turn your model wishes into reality
roamingstop replied to CopMike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
The site has a great potential to allow others to vote on the work based upon its merits, but I suspect it will all too easily fall into the category of who can gather enough votes through friends, in order to keep high on the rankings... and then garner more points. Somehow the number of votes should be invisible... or models displayed at random to the visitors. That said, I put my 'fire & rescue train' up there; not sure it will get much but sometimes it is nice to have feedback from non 'train people'. -
An interesting; if different side note. I recently had to repair a 12V remote switch; successfully took out the base and saw that inside, it is a really simple mechanism - a magnetic rotary solenoid (not even a DC servo). Probably 200-300 transformer wire wound in a single coil, and a feromagnetic piece which flips between polarities. InsideRemoteSwitch2 by roamingstudio Which got me thinking - is there a way to do something similar with transformer coils; PF current and a magnet mounted onto an axle. Rather than gearing down motors etc; this might make a 99% lego solution which is acceptable also to the non-diehards. Or just buy some really cheap DC servo bits and wire them in.. And yes I know the whole point is to use a 100% Lego solution - but I interpret that as also being allowed to copy a Lego solution, in Lego...

Lego Ball path Marble
roamingstop replied to Hacky's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great GBC... But I could see a fantastic alternative... a long series of tracks where balls roll in parallel (right to left)... and use this to spell messages. OOO O O O <---- O OOO OO OO O O O O O O O OOO O O OOO O O O O -
Or run noscript and adblock addons with Firefox in which case all annoying adverts effectively disappear. Without the adverts it looks good. Ohne diese werbung ist sehr besser; Leider mit popups und werbung ist diese siete nicht benutzfal.

It already is - just click 'English' on the left hand side. Doh! An impressive collection of models - and an interesting site... I find it would be easier to navigate if there were thumbnail images instead of just text... but it sure looks like a nice find.

WIP: Narrow gauge with power functions
roamingstop replied to AussieJimbo's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Space2310 did make a custom switch for narrow gauge - and presented it here on the train tech forum nearly a year ago -
Is that Rapperswil Train Yard I see around 6:00?

Or by buying ME Models straight rails - review here. -
This is insane... no other way to describe it. And not time to watch it all... Just glad you slow down for the front door...
-
Thanks for all the hints - sometimes the obvious one is easy to miss... I just need to find some time to open up one of them... there is definitely a 4.5V and a green square... which could mean anything.

WIP: Narrow gauge with power functions
roamingstop replied to AussieJimbo's topic in LEGO Train Tech
What is the aim for your adventure? To have a narrow gauge railway where the locomotives can be almost the same size as 6 wide? Or to have a small 'N' vs 'O' gauge rail system? If you are going for the powered Locomotive, I would suggest putting the M motor vertical, attached to one bogey, and placing this into the tender, rather than trying to power the locomotive directly...
