[OFFICIAL] LEGO Group to Release New Sail Piece (2023)
TalonCard replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Bit of a roller coaster with the Peter Pan sets; the book has mini mini dolls and is based on the new live action Peter Pan, not the animated version. The mini pirate ship is very meh. However, the Disney birthday train, while it has no pirate minifigures, does look like it has a cool skull and crossbones sail design, so that's something to look forward to. -
[OFFICIAL] LEGO House Set Exclusive: 40504 A Minifigure Tribute

In the UK I believe. The last issue had a fun section on the old LEGO catalog scenes, with two pirate scenes featured. -

Blocks has a digital subscription option that lets you read all their back issues and sends you an email when there's a new issue out, I love it! The article also has a great sketch he did for the early Pirate ship hull designs and a picture of the prototype Black Seas Barracuda--great stuff! -

Cute detail I just noticed...is that supposed to be Denmark on the pirate map, with an X for Billund? -

We can hope, then. The LEGO House exclusives tend to be pretty expensive even at the LEGO House itself, so the base price is going to be pretty steep even before the sellers cut, site fees, and shipping. -
[OFFICIAL] LEGO House Set Exclusive: 40504 A Minifigure Tribute
TalonCard replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
The LEGO House is sort of like a children's museum with interactive experiences near LEGOLAND in Billund. There's also a museum exhibit of LEGO sets in the basement, with an interactive table that lets you examine virtually any LEGO boxed set from any angle. It's pretty amazing; I went there in 2019 with my brother and included pictures of the Pirates related displays in this thread. I know this isn't the set many of us were hoping for, and it's sure to be expensive on the aftermarket, but it's a great surprise, a fantastic design, and a really cool tribute to one of the best minifigures ever. -
I think it may be 2025 before we see Pirates come back in a big way again; the recent major Pirate releases were 2009, 2015, and 2020, so more or less five years apart. In the meantime it does seem like the designers are making sure the molds stay in use, so that's hopeful.

Missing LEGO Magazine Scans -- New Scans
TalonCard replied to TalonCard's topic in LEGO Media and Gaming
Added the Spring 1989 Brick Kicks. It's probably coincidence, but LEGO alligators are featured in this installment of Brick Buildmore and LEGO alligators/crocodiles had already been designed for the Pirates theme by this year, but wouldn't be released until 1994. -

Added Brick Kicks Winter 1988--there's a very colorful Space comic here. -

Added Brick Kicks Fall 1988 (as far as I can tell, this is the issue immediately following #4 and most of the following issues use the Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter convention. Do note, the magazine's approach to covering Native American topics in the comic and cover story isn't the best representation and is certainly dated. -
The strange origins of the Time Cruisers theme
TalonCard replied to jamesster's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Sooooooo...it's possible the Strange Origins of the Time Cruisers theme isn't done yet. I ran across an Instagram post here from a 1994 Italian Topolino comic. It's a wanted poster/contest featuring Max Timebuster, and it seems to indicate some further, possibly comic, adventures in forthcoming issues. Rough Google translation: "WANTED Name..MAX Last name...TIMEBUSTER Address. UNKNOWN Nation. LEGO Profession.... TIME MAJOR. Eyes... COVERED BY DARK GLASSES RED hat WITH VISOR Particular signs. UNGROWTH BEARD Hobby....COLLECTING. LEGO Caution Now you know almost everything about him, but you will soon see him in action. From next week, on Topolino, the adventures of Max Timebuster and his time machine begin. You will see him venturing through the streets of the LEGO SYSTEM City and on the railway lines of the Trains. His favorite hobby - collecting LEGO - will inspire him to take on the Oropacos tribe in the Pirates and Castle's famous dragon. Thanks to his time machine, he will even be able to annoy the Spyrius in Space. Malo Max's adventures are also a challenge for all vol. Build a time machine more powerful than Max's with LEGO bricks, take a photo or draw a drawing and send it by 30.09.94, Operazione Max Timebuster, LEGO SpA, va C. Colombo 12, 20020 Lainate (MI ), The best projects will not only help us take on that scoundrel, but will also be exhibited at the Bologna Motor Show, from December 2nd to 12th. Now that you know the address, remember to write to us to receive the new 1994 catalog or ask your toy dealer for it. Alls next week, always on LEGO SYSIEM Mickey Mouse" The adventure continues... -
I'd just like to see them mix up the classic bicorn and tricorn with more color variations: light and dark gray, blue, red, green, white, etc. Also a scruffier red coat for pirates without a ruff. Blue and red parrots with old school prints. And there haven't been nearly enough sets/minifigures with powdered wigs.

Added Brick Kick Issue 1. Like most of the Brick Kicks issues, I believe I've seen some pages of this online before but not complete scans. -
The strange origins of the Time Cruisers theme
TalonCard replied to jamesster's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Oh my gosh Tazakk, thank you so much for all the hard work you've put into these! I can't wait to sit down and read the entire saga! It's crazy how long this has taken to come to light, and I'll be forever thankful for you and everyone else who had a hand in keeping the recovery going over the years. -Apparently Ali/Ingo is from the Wild West originally--don't want to spoil what characters he's connected to, but that's super interesting. -After 26 years, finally some lore on the aliens from the Explorien stickers, lol. -

Added Bricks n Pieces Summer 1991. The "Thunder Rock" contest looks interesting, with new character James Brick. Also a fun feature about the upcoming Pirate Boats attraction. -
I don't know if it means anything, but there was a Blacktron astronaut in one of the recent employee Christmas gifts a few years back, so they probably didn't have to go too far back to remake the minifigure for this promo. There was a blue shirt "Rummy" pirate in that set too...

I am so. freaking. excited. about the new bicorn colors. We have been waaaaaaaaay overdue for a new color on those hats, and I love them so much. Would have preferred a straight blue or red, but I will 100% buy this just for the hats. Amazing.

Added LEGO Adventures! Magazine #2 from May 1999--I believe this one has been posted before, but only in Russian. Love the wacky 80s Robot in the Space Port comic. This wraps up all the Adventures! Magazines I have currently. Since it ran for #34 issues, there are still a great deal more out there to find that haven't been scanned yet. Back to Bricks n Pieces for the next upload! -
The YouTube content that I enjoyed the most at the time I was planning this series were channels like Defunctland, which covers things like old Disney theme park attractions and shows. Often, they'll choose a different intro/style for each episode, sometimes with original music. I wanted to try and do that here and push myself a little with each subsequent intro. I also wanted to bring a little bit of existing Pirate lore to life each time. So the first episode has a dramatic reading of the first text to mention Redbeard as a character, the second is in the style of a documentary with an era-appropriate reading, the fourth will be--well, you'll see, etc. I knew I wanted to do at least one "sea shanty" style LEGO Pirate song for an intro, and I thought it would be fun to pay tribute to the winning poem from an old LEGO magazine, which does a nice job of presenting all the main original pirate characters with accurate character details. My wife was kind enough to sing the verses (she's a really excellent singer), thus creating the overall melody, and ludo_bisconti on Fiverr provided the orchestration, instruments, and mix after it became apparent that neither of us would have the time to do it ourselves. Definitely learned a lot here, not the least of which is to give myself more time for anything involving original music. I'm still learning how to properly record vocals, and my final mix included elements from both bisconti's mix and my wife's raw vocals to achieve the overall effect that I wanted. However, in doing so, I threw off the overall rhythm of the piece--I'm not musically inclined myself. In addition to singing, my wife demonstrated her vocal range by doing a very convincing parrot impression around 9:47 and 15:09, which makes me laugh every time.

That's awesome!

I think the comparison mainly comes from the fact that the Pirate Captain is one of the few pirate minifigures (as in not Imperial) to wear a red coat with a shoulder belt, which is Foul's primary color in all of his appearances. I didn't notice until Phes posted the pictures for comparison, but it seems like the mustache, eyebrows, and even the missing tooth are also a pretty close match. I think the comparison falls short when you take into account the details of each character; Foul is a pretty well established pirate who's held onto his ship for at least 15 years, he's successful in most of his piratical endeavors except when Redberd's crew outsmarts him, etc. The Pirate Captain may seem like a generic character, but his very lack of a name is part of his character; he got in late in the pirate game and all the good names were taken. He's unlucky and most of his ships tend to sink, etc. My vote for tying Foul to an established Pirate minifigure would be this guy from Pirates Perilous Pitfall, having lost his ship and leg to Redbeard and Will at some point after his last appearance. But I'm sure it's only a matter of time until LEGO Legacy: Heroes Unboxed gives him a completely different identity. (Though Gameloft, if you're listening, you should definitely name him Captain Foul! )
