  1. I really liked the last Creator Pirate ship; I'm very curious to see what this new one will be like. Between the two BDP sets (so far) this year and this ship, I'm feeling pretty good about this year as a Pirate fan. (My wallet wants to make me walk the plank though.)
  2. I'm liking this set more and more every time I see it--they did a really nice job with the minifigures considering the limitations. And the multiple flags (especially the historically inspired Jolly Roger design) are an excellent touch. It's expensive, but hopefully this will be a good option for folks who are in the market for an Imperial ship and missed out on the Imperial Flagship back in the day.
  3. It arrived today!!! I'm so excited; it looks so good on the box. I didn't take a close look at the animal and accesory selection until now. More seagulls, a cockatoo and a bunch of bananas! (I have a lot of bananas, but not a bunch, lol.)
  4. Mine is now In Warehouse as well--thanks for the heads up!
  5. I recently found out that the online LEGO Minifigure Factory has still has a Halloween design that's very useable for civilian pirate minifigures. Here's the one I made: As you can see, with a few additions, he makes a good merchant or settler: The print quality isn't great (you can definitely see the print lines) but it looks better in person than it does here. (For reference, you can barely see that red dot on his cravat when you're holding the figure.) And as part of a crowd of minifigs it's not really going to be noticable. It's a little pricey, but I'll definitely be making more of these--I was happy enough with the base design here that I didn't even get to customize it this time! There are a few other exclusive Pirate prints based on the Will and Camilla minifigures from the vending machine set (these were unavailable for a brief time, but they're back now) and some other Pirates and Goonies decorations that would make for fun custom figures.
  6. Woo! That looks great Chris! You've clearly been collecting for awhile.
  7. That's awesome! Did anyone else get theirs or have their order status change? Mine is still saying "in process."
  8. Sorry, no, they're not the torso designs from the set, but a range of Goonies t-shirts and such. I'm not a super fan of the movie, but a lot of them have some fun uses of classic swords, skulls, flames, etc. Very cool for fans of the movie, but not so useful for Pirate builders. They do have some neat decorations like the compass element, etc, that you can put on torsos to customize them too. I was surprised to find this cool looking design that I don't recognize from other sets, I think it's a Halloween exclusive, but it will very useful as a civilian Pirate minifigure. That's the one I ended up going with; I'll post a picture when it arrives!
  9. So on a whim I decided to try the Minifigure Factory "design a minifigure" feature today... I tried to do it awhile back but all the Pirate torso options were mysteriously gone. But today not only do they have Pirate options available once again, there's a whole range of nice Goonies torsos and decorations! Might check it out if you like the film; I don't know how long these last for.
  10. Mine is still In Process, I hope it's not stuck there...
  11. I really like the sail ripping swashbuckling feature--a great pirate movie stunt now in brick form!
  12. Added Winter 1990-1991 Brick Kicks.
  13. Hmmm, the pirate ship side actually looks a lot better than the Ideas submission, but the caverns aren't as neat. I'm a little torn there, but it's always nice to see a LEGO pirate ship set. Also kudos to them for doing the One Eyed Willy minifigure and the new Sloth hat mold. Just realized that with the Enterprise set we'll probably be getting two LEGO Datas back to back this year. 😄
  14. Wow, I don't think i've actually seen that Space Police one anywhere before!
  15. Love to see these! Thank you so much for taking the pictures and translating. Do you remember which issues these happened to be in? Donald Duck was always my favorite too but I had no idea as a kid how popular he was in other countries.
  16. I've also seen a pretty nice looking updated Steve on a Facebook group; the creator used white arms on that Dreamzzz BAM torso from a few months back.
  17. I'll leave it to the moderators to decide who is obsessively spamming the board, thank you. And "borderline stalking"? That's an incredibly harsh accusation to make over a couple of forum posts about toys.
  18. Is there any particular reason you're reposting the entire thread from here? I just made some corrections and asked for attribution for scans I originally posted on this forum; no need to repost the entire thread with those sections edited out. This is very peculiar forum behavior. For reference, my original post in that thread: those were from Sadie's contact with Pirates comic author Per Sanderhage, actually. Post 1 Post 2 For ref: Also I'm glad you found the Brick Fanatics scans I made and linked here useful, but if you're going to reupload them onto your own Flickr account I'd appreciate a link back or attribution, thank you.
  19. Okay, cool.
  20. As a young Pirates fan these sets were a fun surprise. Most sets appeared as a whole wave that you'd see all at once, or if you didn't see them on shelves you'd at least see them in one of the in-set catalogs. But if you didn't get the Shop at Home catalog, the only way to know these were even around was to happen across them in stores. Barnacle Bay was a very exciting find for me because I just so happened to have exactly enough pocket money to buy it as soon as I saw it. (I had been hoping against hope that a Skull's Eye Schooner was marked down enough to get it, lol, but a previously unknown Pirate set was a fine consolation prize. ) I saw this set unopened in a Bricks and Minfigs store 10 years ago for $30; I wish I'd bought it! And the 1788 Treasure Chest set was just an incredible treat to see on store shelves; the box shape and art, the novelty of the flag use on the raft, the fun hidden compartment, the inclusion of pirate and Islander figures... I think that was the last time I walked into a store and saw a Pirate set i didn't know about, outside of my dreams anyway.
  21. Thank you for watching! I'm glad you liked the concept. There are some inferences and assumptions, especially in these older videos, that turned out to be incorrect. For Ironhook specifically I didn't recall at first how direct the connection was between the minifigure that was introduced in 1992 and the one in the 1996 Red Beard Runner set. (It's been a long time since I made that video!) But I've since gone back and checked the source (The LEGO Book 2009; the 2018 edition says the same thing with slightly different text), and I'll stand by this one; it's made clear that the book treats both minifigures as the same character. "The second LEGO Pirates captain was Captain Ironhook, introduced in 1992 and shown in command of the Renegade Runner in 1993 (6268). Not as stylishly dressed as Captains Redbeard or Brickbeard, the tattered Ironhook battled the Royal Guards and Islanders and occasionally gained or lost a peg-leg. He was last seen aboard 1996's Red Beard Runner (6289)." 2009 Edition scan 2018 Edition scan The Mania Magazine "Jake Blake" name isn't mentioned in the book, but since he probably wasn't born with the name "Ironhook" it's not a huge deal, and easier to reconcile than all the other alternate LEGO character names. Now, I know not everyone takes the DK books at face value for various reasons, but I do like to try to scour and collect every scrap of lore I can. In this case, it wasn't something I came up with but something I sourced from an official LEGO Book. The random magazine page was certainly an awkward place to put a new pirate name! Most of the Redbeard Runner crew got names in that magazine, similarly hidden across the pages. This approach wasn't super typical for the time; most minifigures received mini bios and introductions in the first two pages of the magazine. (That being said, they didn't usually have that many named characters in one issue, so it was still a win for young pirate fans. :) )
  22. I also tried to track Ironhook's peg leg from appearance to appearance, in hopes of some consistency. Mixed results there. But since even the reference book points out that he seemed to gain and loose his peg leg from appearance to appearance, I figure he just sometimes wears a more convincing wooden leg that allows him to wear shoes; which wasn't unheard of at the time. (And of course, however often they interprete the characters as human, as minifigures they can swap whatever body parts they want, lol.)
  23. I don't think Bricklink does have the Redbeard Runner minifigure listed as Ironhook, at least not currently? Seems to be "Pirate Shirt with Knife, Black Legs, Brown Pirate Triangle Hat" That being said though, I think there's still a case to be made that he is the same character. The exact quote from The LEGO Book New Edition (2018) you mentioned is: "The second LEGO Pirates captain was Captain Ironhook, introduced in 1992 and shown in command of the Renegade Runner in 1993 (6268). Not as stylishly dressed as Captains Redbeard or Brickbeard, the tattered Ironhook battled the Royal Guards and Islanders and occasionally gained or lost a peg-leg. He was last seen aboard 1996's Red Beard Runner (6289)." I think some folks discount the DK books as sources since they tend to be light on research and proofreading, and true, they are from the UK, but for me I like to use them since there are relatively few LEGO lore nuggets out there and I welcome all sources. I'm a fan of interpreting apparently contradictory information as a character arc; I like the idea that Jake Blake took on the moniker Ironhook as a fearsome pirate captain, but was eventually reduced to working as a deckhand on the Redbeard Runnner for his longtime frenemy Captain Redbeard. If one interprets the lore only from an American perspective, while Ironhook's name wasn't used back when the sets were released, it's been referenced in recent years in the Pirates of Barracuda Bay instructions and the Pirate Captain collectable minifigure biography, for whatever that's worth. Hey Brick Bandit! You can DM here; I'll reach out. I'm doing a video series on Redbeard myself right now.
  24. For what it's worth, Ironhook was originally a proposed name for the Pirate Captain character that became Roger/Redbeard, and the Ironhook-lookalike-with-tricorne from the Redbeard Runner was given a name in the US Mania Magazine, Jake "the Snake" Blake.
  25. I'm not sure exactly when the treasure chest design was changed from slots to no slots; I do know that the old version had very small pips on the lid that had matching holes in the chest to allow it to open. With use the small pips can get worn down or misaligned, causing the lid to fall off easily. Later versions of the treasure chests have larger pips and holes to avoid this problem; I'm assuming the slots were included to allow the walls of the chest to flex outward slightly to accommodate the larger lid during assembly and use. I'll have to check my Ironhook figures to see about the head situation, that's interesting...
