General questions about buying LEGO in the US
AFOLguy1970 replied to Ojik's topic in General LEGO Discussion
There is also a Lego store in the Staten Island mall in New York. I am not sure if they have the markup. If someone were to be touring NY, they could always ride the free ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island. Not sure how far the mall is from the ferry, but maybe that would be a way to avoid the Rockefeller Center markup. As for the new Manhattan store on 5th avenue, my guess would be that it too would have inflated prices. It is probably the cost of rent that forces these stores to sell the sets for more. -
Banthas might be hard to come by. The Tusken attack on Luke probably would not be made, because we already have the landspeeder, Luke, and Obi Wan in Mos Eisley. The best chance for a Tusken/Bantha set could be Anakin Skywalker and the encampment from Episode II. It would make a good set, and I do not think they have done it before. They could reuse the Tusken figure from the T-16.

I can see the potential in a Hobbit book, however LOTR would be a whole different story. I would be curious to see if such a book would include Balrog, Lorien, Gondor, or the interior of Mordor, none of which made an appearance in the sets. If you do not include any of those, the book would feel incomplete just like the line, and if you did, it would be a slap in the face to LOTR collectors, because you basically just validated that those things should have been included, but were not. Danged if you do, danged if you dont. Since the Hobbit was well covered by Lego, perhaps just sticking to the Hobbit trilogy would be the way to go with a DK book.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
AFOLguy1970 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
The Brickset forum did give specific information about what kind of "bar" to expect with the Detective Agency. The poster who claims a source suggested a juice bar, milkshake bar, donut and coffee place, or something along those lines. Indeed PR, Horizon Express, and Pirates of the Caribbean have suggested the presence of alcohol. Perhaps even the Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina would also be an example. It is doubtful that they are drinking Aunt Beru's blue milk in that wretched hive of scum and villainy. A detective agency, at least your typical Hollywood one, makes me think of smoke and alcohol. Sherlock Holmes had that pipe, others had cigars, and even Eddie Valiant had his drinking moments. Perhaps the bottom floor would be more of a soda fountain or something maybe in the style of the 1950's. -
Exactly. Having a project get 10,000 votes is more to make a point in this case than it is to actually get the set made.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
AFOLguy1970 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
This. I have every modular since the FB with the exception of TH. I do not have it because it is $200 plus tax. Saving up for it means no Hobbit Lonely Mountain set, no Passenger Train to go around the Christmas tree, and my MOC gets put on hold for a few months. The Town Hall looks good. I have never met a modular I did not like. It is big, and it is in the design of many public buildings found in both Europe and North America. It is just that price point that is keeping me away. If some extra money comes my way, then it is a possible buy. Otherwise, it is not something that I cannot live without. -
The value of the Imperial Star Destroyer (set 75055)
AFOLguy1970 replied to Something_Awesome's topic in LEGO Star Wars
When looking at the price per piece ratio, it is also important to look at the size of the parts. With that said, it does seem like the ISD has a fair amount of decent sized parts, especially plates. It is an attractive build, and the minifigs included are among the most desired, especially for those who like imperials. The Darth Vader is a new version. The Navy trooper, crew member, and imperial officer all have nice detail. The stormtroopers give the set a lot of value, because only this one and the upcoming Slave I ($200+) are the only two sets with the new version of stormtrooper. There is a lot of debate about if the new wave will provide more of these, and there is a chance it may not. If the next wave gives these guys a complete miss (in mind and many others, the Rebels version is not even on the table for consideration as a substitute), then that increases the value of these guys even more. Another thing to consider is that a lot of attention is being given to the Rebels show, and it can be assumed that Episode VII will have the major priority when it comes out. If there are no Imperial Star Destroyers in that movie, at least like the ones we all know, then it may be a long while, if ever, that we see another version of this made. This ship is as iconic as the X wing and the Tie Fighter. It appears in all three OT movies and is instantly recognizable as "Star Wars". I never owned one of the earlier releases of this ship, but sure am glad to have this. It is sturdy and well designed. While $130 seems like a lot, you are correct that there are a lot of parts and the minifigs are top quality. I think it was a good value, at least for someone like me. -
[Petition] Save LEGO the Lord of the Rings
AFOLguy1970 replied to Trunkbass's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I wonder what it took for Bionicle to be reintroduced? Were there any petitions for that theme? Otherwise, how did Lego know that there was enough demand for that theme to reinstate it? If only we knew the answer to that, then we could try to get TLG's attention in a similar fashion. In the meantime, the petition and supporting the Minas Tirith with a high number of votes makes sense to me. I fully do not expect Lego to make any of the Minas Tirith models presented even if they hit the 10,000 vote threshold, but it would send a message that there is demand for some type of Gondor set.- 298 replies

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
AFOLguy1970 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
On Brickset, there is some discussion about this. They also mention that it will not be "retro" style, whatever that may mean. I would like to see how you could pull of modern architecture and still make an attractive set. When I think of modern, I think of boring cubism and comparative lack of detail to buildings of earlier time periods. A strip mall comes to mind, among other things. Details, especially on the exterior, is crucial to me for buying a modular. If I want modern architecture, I could buy the City fire station, police station, etc. I am hoping for something like Baker Street, a brownstone, or some type of older building that could house the detective agency. A bar or similar establishment would be nice for the ground floor. Hope the design video will come out soon. -
This really captures the essence of Laketown. Such a contrast to Dale as it was before Smaug's attack. Very nice detail. The effect of ice floating on the water is also impressive.

Dont forget Wuher (the bartender in the Cantina), along with an OT stormtrooper

Joker Brand Products! Where you get a grin, again, and again. I like the comparison of the two colors and it does look good in blue. Might have to build this one some day.

Intruiging Tweet from TLG-Apparent huge news is coming
AFOLguy1970 replied to ocifant's topic in General LEGO Discussion
OMG!!!!!! I am going to take the rest of the day off and eat at Red Lobster tonight. I think most people knew it would probably be Bionicle, judging from the posts. Those poor Dr. Who fans...... Bionicle disappeared before I came out of the Dark Age. After looking at examples of the sets, it seems like it would compete the most with Hero Factory and Mixels. -
Yes, he is much bigger than I expected. The long tail and wingspan help to highlight his size. I would like to see him compared with the castle dragon. It would partially explain why Lonely Mountain is so expensive. It seems like the Brickshow guys indicated he is made up of approximately 20 parts.

Perfect. It honestly looks like a real set and wish it was to get that Jawa as well.

Intruiging Tweet from TLG-Apparent huge news is coming
AFOLguy1970 replied to ocifant's topic in General LEGO Discussion
How about the sequel to the Lego Movie? No, of course it is Bionicle, even though many of its true fans already know. Of course, a really good surprise would be multiple announcements. You could introduce Bionicle, a new movie, a new TV series, Classic Space, Dr. Who, the Detective Agency, Cloud City, Minas Tirith, and Elves all on the same day -
I have pretty much written ITT off at this point with the assumption there will be four "Ghost" stormies in it. At this point, the hope is at least one of the sets other than Slave I will have an OT stormie in the style of the new ISD. The silver lining is that this will be a cheap wave, only purchasing T-16 and maybe the Shadowtroopers. This will free up money to be used for MOC completion, finishing off the Hobbit line, and maybe saving up for a nice big one such as Sandcrawler or DS.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
AFOLguy1970 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Details are also what elevates the part count rapidly. Someone could build a blocky structure in City style with larger bricks and probably be far short of a couple of thousand pieces. It is details like tiles, microbuild furniture, using plates instead of bricks to achieve better color variations, and detailing with small parts such as round 1x1 plates that really adds to the piece count. -
There will be as soon as one of the reviewers such as Brickshow, Jangbricks, etc. discovers a set at their local Toys R Us. It would not surprise me if they already tried to find one, and they did not have one of the "lucky" Toys R Us stores near them. It is almost like a competition among them to be the first to get a review out.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
AFOLguy1970 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
If a large count Lego Ideas set actually reached 10000 and was selected, that would set a new precedence. Have we ever had a CUUSOO/Ideas set produced with piece count numbering into four digits? -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
AFOLguy1970 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
There is certainly no harm in asking the designer if they have the instructions. There are also several sites which feature various modular designs for sale. Some of them are very nice. -
Even with a high price per piece ratio, I would agree the Witch King Battle is still the best set in value. Three characters (four if you count the skeleton) plus some useful parts is great. With that said, I agree with Thomas that Lonely Mountain is crazy overpriced. I have no idea how the reseller market is going to make anything off that. Bricklink prices for Smaug and other select pieces in the set will have to be fairly high to recover the investment. IMO, It would have to be at least $30 cheaper. Even seeing the whole part of BOFA, it does not really impress me. Dain and crowned Thorin are good to get, but the other characters seem redundant to me, some more than others.

Intruiging Tweet from TLG-Apparent huge news is coming
AFOLguy1970 replied to ocifant's topic in General LEGO Discussion
To me, "huge" news would be something that would impact almost every consumer of Lego. Any given theme might be "huge" to someone interested in it, but to others, it will be a bit less inspiring. My idea of huge news would be along the lines of: (1) a quadruple VIP points day (2) a major expansion of online pick a brick, where they would actually have every nonlicensed piece and color available. Having it at a fair price would also be news to me. Of course, this would horrify many Bricklink sellers out there (3) the return of the LDD design and purchase your own model Bionicle? If this is it, then I am happy for you Bionicle fans. Now, how about some Classic Space? -
Now that I look at it again, it looks like he moved his arkenstone from the throne and placed it in there. He is probably using the extra printed piece to maintain on the throne. The throne arkenstone is apparently mounted on a 2x2 jumper plate which has a sticker attached to it. This could be a little tricky to apply. Presumably, the pattern sticker on the throne has a hole in the middle to accommodate the jumper stud.
-
I think that is the Arkenstone. You can see the Chima crystal with the 1x1 clear round plate on top which appears to have printing. So does that mean there are two arkenstones in the set or was the one moved from the throne to this location? Another nice detail is that the printing on Smaug's belly does reveal his weakness. I also noticed that the secret entrance opens outward, and the "key" is mounted to the inside
