Would you open 34 years old MISB Lego?

Woah, I forgot about the old crinkly bags! It's funny how a little thing like that can remind you of so much! And of course the display boxes... well now I'm all nostalgic -

Would you open 34 years old MISB Lego?
rodiziorobs replied to MaasEffekt's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Probably. As a kid, my collection was very small. I would, however, spend hours poring over the pirates, castle, and space sets in the S@H catalogs and other booklets. Even though I never owned many of those sets, they still have a pretty strong draw for me. If I happened upon one of those sets, I would not hesitate to open the box and relive a childhood fantasy of actually owning them. However, if it were things from before that era--say, the yellow castle days (I came into Lego at the very end of the "Legoland" branding)--I would keep it sealed, and look to sell it. I would have no personal connection to it to make me want to keep it as a collector item. Plus, I know someone else could get more enjoyment out of collecting it, and I would get more enjoyment out of their money -

Bromide additives have not been included n bricks since the late 90's, so if there is any UV discoloration, it's not due to that. Also, transparent bricks aren't ABS, but usually polycarbonate. There may be other effects from UV lights, but I am not sure what they would be. As far as the fluorescent effect, I have achieved the same result from my projector when it's in blue screen mode, both from direct light and ambient light: Andromeda's Gates week 35 by rodiziorobs, on Flickr -
This has been my experience as well; they don't really care what pieces you take, so long as it adds to 15, assuming 5 parts per fig: head, torso, legs + 2 accessories.

I had been wanting to pick up some Elves sets since last year, but just couldn't bring myself to actually spend money on them. Then, yesterday I was at Walmart with my wife who is much more of a TOL (Tolerator of Lego) than an actual FOL. She saw the Elves section and said in shock, "They make Lego sets like this?! I want one." So, we settled on the Starlight Inn, and it's a superb little set. She built the whole thing herself, and kept making comments about how cute it was and how she could almost understand my affinity for the hobby. I am frankly, a little jealous but I am going to spend my Lego budget on the updated PAB wall next week, so I guess it will be even longer til I get myself a proper Elves set...

Well if it is a prototype, it wouldn't have to have the logo on it. Since it wouldn't be an official piece, perhaps the prototyping moulds don't include it? Still, a long shot, but it's probably the most likely of unlikely explanations.

Or, you know, do. I thought it seemed a little far-fetched to be real. Then again, it also seemed not far-fetched enough Maybe that should have tipped me off. 'Twas a far more effective prank than the Korean one for the general forum, so, well done, sir. :slow clap:

No. What do you mean?! I saw it in the movie, it looked just like that!

So Andromeda's Gates meets Operation Petticoat, sans Cary Grant, huh? Sounds fun.

Cute vignette, but can I point out how cleverly you have camouflaged the support for the plane into the background? I know it's a small detail, but brilliant. -
I am going to try to make it Tuesday (since today's planned trip bottomed out ) If I do, I'll prepare a full report

Thanks, Rick! I use mobile almost exclusively, and while I already knew most of those (except for the pirate and dragon ones, many of which I didn't even know existed), it's great to have a reference.
