  1. I really want to own a LEGO pirate ship (or maybe even a merchant ship), but all of the ships for sale on the aftermarket are ludicrously expensive and the upcoming Brick Bounty doesn't really appeal to me. Is it possible to build a ship for under $50 using parts ordered from Bricklink? I've had experience with Bricklink in the past ordering parts for a LEGO Ideas project, but all of my MOCs so far have been built using pieces that I already own.
  2. Any word on when we'll finally get to find out what the big secret is? Also, I have a quick question about Prize E: Does Star-Lord also come with his regular hair, or does he just have his helmet?
  3. Day 24- Santa Gandalf Every year, when the holidays roll around, Gandalf the Grey trades in his cloak and hat for a more festive costume and goes around the Shire delivering presents. I hope you all enjoyed my advent calendar. Merry Christmas, and best of luck in the new year!
  4. Day 23- Present with Ring This may look like any unassuming old present, but swing it open to reveal... ...the One Ring itself! Only one more day left! What will tomorrow bring?
  5. Day 22- Old Bilbo And finally, the exclusive minifigure you've all been waiting for! Ian Holm's Bilbo is an integral character in Lord of the Rings, but he hasn't been released as a figure yet because he doesn't appear in any action scenes that could be made into sets. To make this minifigure, I used a Harry Potter goblin's torso, Balin's head, and a Frodo hairpiece painted grey.
  6. Day 19- Orthanc "It was fashioned by the builders of old, who smoothed the Ring of Isengard, and yet it seemed a thing not made by the craft of Men, but riven from the bones of the earth in the ancient torment of the hlls. A peak and isle of rock it was, black and gleaming hard: four mighty piers of many-sided stone were welded into one, but near the summit they opened into gaping horns, their pinnacles sharp as the points of spears, keen-edged as knives. Between them was a narrow space, and there upon a floor of polished stone, written with strange signs, a man might stand five hundred feet above the plain." Fun fact: this model is actually built upside down, with the stud facing the bottom. Day 20- Barad-Dur This towering fortress of the Dark Lord is the tallest model in the calendar. Day 21- Party Tree There are plenty of trees in Middle-Earth, but I like to think of it as the Party Tree where Bilbo celebrated his 111th birthday. There's enough room underneath the branches for him to stand and deliver his obligatory speech.
  7. Day 18- Gollum Here's the lovable Stoor hobbit himself, on the set of my upcoming brickfilm. Something doesn't seem quite right, though... That's better.
  8. Day 14- Fell Beast "It was a winged creature: if bird, than greater than all other birds, and it was naked, and neither quill nor feather did it bear, and its vast pinions were as webs of hide between horned fingers…" After their horses were drowned in a magic flood, the Ringwraithes upgraded to these winged steeds/incarnations of evil. This model can move its head, wings, and tail, and it comes with a display stand. Day 15- Nazgul Day 16- Mordor Armory This skull-faced weapons rack comes with a halberd for the Uruk-Hai and a longsword for yesterday's Nazgul. Day 17- Dead Marshes Before they could pass on to Mordor, Frodo, Sam, and Gollum had to pass through these forsaken lands.
  9. Day 11-Uruk-Hai You can never have too many orcs, so this figure makes a great army-builder. Day 12-Table with Food On day 7 we gave the partying hobbits something to drink; now they can have a feast as well. No chairs, though...I hope hobbits don't mind standing while they eat. Day 13-Ruins of Osgiliath For those who don't know, Osgiliath was the ancient capital city of Gondor until it fell into disrepair. Faramir's army defended it from Mordor orcs until they were forced to retreat to Minas Tirith in Return of the King. This build is actually both microscale and minifigure-scale, so you can stand minifigures on top.
  10. That Batman head looks like it could be used to make a great-looking custom superhero figure! I took a closer look at the Bad Cop Car Chase box art, and it looks like Bad Cop has a new "Good Cop" alt-face print.
  11. Day 8- Bag End In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit... Welcome to Bag End, where it all began! This model is based off the Unexpected Gathering set. Day 9- Rohan Armory People often complain when they see weapons racks in Star Wars advent calendars, so I tried to make mine look unique and interesting. This armory comes with a spear and shield for Theoden and a bow and arrow for Legolas. Day 10- Rivendell
  12. I was at the LEGO Store in King of Prussia, and they still had a container full of brown horses! I managed to fit eight horses into a small cup, and I filled the rest with red chairs and transparent blue cones.
  13. LEGO just released a Creator set called Red Creatures that goes for $15, and includes parts to build a large red dragon along with a scorpion and a snake.
  14. Category A: #2 #3 Category B: #3 #4 Category C: #2 #3
  15. Day 6-Eomer Today's the second minifigure placeholder day, but I'll replace Eomer with Eowyn once I find out how to make custom minifigures. Day 7-Barrel of Wine No hobbit party would be complete without a keg of Old Winyards. This model is an exact copy of the barrel from Frodo's Cooking Corner.
  16. Day 4-Mount Doom Day 5-Helm's Deep This model was built to look like the Battle of Helm's Deep set. The wall is hinged so you can arrange it at an angle.
  17. Day 3- Black Gate of Mordor "Upon the west of Mordor marched the gloomy range of Ephel Duath, the Mountains of Shadow, and upon the north the broken peaks and barren ridges of Ered Lithui, grey as ash But as these ranges approached one another, they swung out long arms northward; and between these arms thee was a deep defile. This was Cirith Gorgor, the Haunted Pass, the entrance to the land of the Enemy. High cliffs lowered upon either side, and thrust forward from its mouth were two sheer hlls, black-boned and bare. Upon them stood the Teeth of Mordor, two towers strong and tall… Across the mouth of the pass, from cliff to cliff, the Dark Lord had built a rampart of stone. In it there was a single gate of iron, and upon its battlement sentinels paced unceasingly." This model can be split into two separate halves, just like the official Battle at the Black Gate set:
  18. Day 2-Legolas You may be wondering why I don't have a picture of a Legolas minifigure here to show you, but the truth is that he's so common that I'm thinking of replacing him with an exclusive minifigure soon. Are there any Middle-Earth characters who you'd like to see made into minifigures? I'm thinking of making a snow Nazgul...
  19. I thought it would be fun to do a day-by-day "review" of this advent calendar, so up until Christmas Eve (or at least until I forget), I'm going to post a new model from the calendar each day. Let's get started! Day 1- Argonath “Upon great pedestals founded in the deep waters stood two great kings of stone… The left hand of each was raised palm outwards in gesture of warning… upon each head there was a crumbling helm and crown.” I thought the Pillars of the Kings would be a good way to start off the calendar because it's recognizable without being too iconic. I used Gandalf's torso to make the body, but in the final set I hope it will have a custom stone print. Tune in tomorrow for more Middle-Earth goodness!
  20. Does anyone know how to ask a staff member to create a poll? I'm thinking of adding a poll to this topic asking members which exclusive minifigures they want added to the calendar.
  21. The king looks great, but I hope his crown mold won't replace the current one (same with the carpenter's hard hat). Including hats and hair in one mold really limits their MOCing potential.
  22. My ideal Christmas gift this year would be the latest modular building, the Detective's Office. Thanks again for holding this raffle, CopMike!
  23. Welcome to the forum! Your MOC looks amazing!
  24. I'm guessing that we're going to get minifigures from Ghostbusters, Simpsons, Guardians of the Galaxy, The LEGO Movie, and X-men as prizes this year.
  25. I've seen pictures of the two Lake-Town sets in one layout and they look great together.
