Which Official Pirate LEGO Sets Do You Have?
SkaForHire replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I have enough ships... just not enough figs to man them all! :) I do have a lot though... I just really like the imperials and always want more :) Although our custom torso people here do an excellent job, and if i could find a decent printer and cheep enough figs to modify I might make myself some imperial guardsmen and as for PaB wall... they have this new bucket for $100 that is about the size of the freetyle tubs... I am just waiting for a time that I go in there and it is mostly grays, whites, blacks, and arches.... because if you build the stacks I am sure I can get at least 2000 pieces in there... (in the large round cups that they have always had at the ORlando store, I can get around 300 pieces in them not counting small filler pieces) so when they finally have the "right" assortment for a large fortress I am going to spend a couple hours there filling that bucket :) -

it would probably kill it lol.... especially if it was of the same quality as the old pirates. or even that of vikings or new castle... -

Tell me about it, lol... you either have to teach or work for the government... They whine and complain in the news and on TV all the time about the shortage of high school teachers in Florida... but apparently there is an overabundance of social science teachers... I'm still applying to jobs for that. I originally found a job teaching history at a technical university - but of course they only teach so much history... and no open classes next semester. The same goes for nautical archeology... except if you go and get a degree in that (at say East Carolina or Texas A&M) there probably is more jobs out there for it. Nautical archeology is becoming bigger as it becomes harder to get permits to dig on land - plus the public is interested in underwater stuff more sometimes - especially with the popularity of pirates. I am a naval and maritime historian, however I doubt I will ever find a job doing just that... as much as kids may like to take a college class on pirates, you have to be able to teach survey courses like American history or world history (which I do already and don't mind) anyway back to lego - If they would just re-release pirates I would not have this problem LOL! -

Thanks, although unless I can find a full time job in my field (historian,) I will probably be moving on in a year for a PhD. Although it is a good vacation from school :) A lot to do, but too darned hot to do it LOL. (I come from Pennsylvania, where they usually have already had snow this time of year!) Is there any AFOL groups in the area? I have ran into a few AFOLs over the last couple years visiting the Lego Store down here on job hunts and vacations - so I know they are out there! as for my dilemma... I just am trying to prevent myself from buying way too much lego. I have most of the pirate sets that were released, and way too many ships. It may just be easier not seeing my collection for a couple years and just rebuilding a castle collection while I am at this apartment. As a lot of you point out, it can easily be converted to pirates - especially with the new ships. -

sorry for not posting for a while, I just moved last month, so I am without either of my LEGO collections, and until recently without Internet... The good news is... I am 3 minutes from the world's largest Pick a Brick wall (I believe it is) also i get a 10% discount because who I work for... (but I think I am going to apply to work there - I think they get 30% and four times a year get half off!) Bad news - No collection here.... Not much room in my apartment.... I must make a decision which theme I am going to collect and display down here (leave the rest in storage) I tried to keep up with exo-force lately, but they pump out those sets so fast that I am already behind what is on the shelves (I also missed Sentai Fortress, thinking I would be able to get it on clearance) I may still just buy some mechs for good times sake, since they tend to be avout 14 dollars - butotherwise the theme is cool, but does not hold my interest past robots. (off topic but... i just picked up 6 7713s for 12 dollars each [$50 retail] minus my 10% discount at the Lego Store. Someday I hope to turn those into a nice profit lol) I am really attracted to the new castle, I haven't seen what 2008 sets look like yet but early this summer I spent a bunch on most of these castle sets, and did grab up the boat to pirate-ize. These sets are just so cool, and my fiance is partial to castle... plus they are current so I am tending to lean that way.... but pirates has my heart -although it is so hard to continue to build a pirates collection (I already have over 30 of the hulled ships) Pick a Brick Wall may lead to some awesome MOC... but still getting redcoats/bluecoats and pirates is so expensive... and I only have a part time job starting in a couple weeks here (I also had another one as a professor, but my university does not have classes for me this next semester coming up... so need to find another job... can we say lego store? lol) Not to mention I could never have all of my pirate collection out of storage and at my apartment... just not enough room... So This is my dilemma - give up pirate collecting for a while and spend what little money I have on Castle or try and go a new direction with my pirate collection... more MOCs and less buying pirate parts - but still trying to fit them into piratey themed elements..... Hope you guys have been having fun without me! :P I think I still owe pics of my town I was building before I moved..... -
Ironhook FTW!

Looks good so far, can't wait to see it finishted.

I found a lugnet post about it...... yeah that is pretty dick.... i mean it was the community that built the site, even though he made personal sacrifice. He should sell to a group of AFOLs I actually think its his right to shut it down though... i mean it is his site physically... BUT... his whole message telling people not to download all the images and make backups or they will be banned is BS.... in my opinion he is obviously not a friend to the lego community any longer. you just don't remove your part from a community and not give people a chance to recoup first.... think of all those MOCs from five or six years ago by people that don't participate in the overall lego community any more that we would lose.... i can see why people were mad... if he was going to shut down, 15 days notice is not long enough... also $5/month is a harsh fee... 25 a year would be much better... but i dont trust the dude.
-
ok so i have been gone all this month... what happened to BS? and now its back? is there a thread anywhere i can read about this if someone doesnt want to explain it? thanks

Really like the ship, alot. i think the figurehead is really cool, but i also think it is way too big. However... its supposed to be gaudy i am guessing, and if i can wrap my military orientated sense of style around it it is pretty slick. I really like it a lot. Good work, awesome model.
-
pretty massive, and pretty cool. I have the same suggestion though, masts and bowsprit need to be longer. The cross section is awesome though!

I am thinking about doing the same thing... my French is getting so bad. And if i want to get my PhD i need to be able to at least read it!!!! I wonder if there are any pirate discussion (non lego) French forums! haha.

I agree, for someone who wargames and builds with his lego, The more figs the better. even better if they are uniformed. Nothing like seeing 30 viking berserkers all in blue or red coming towards the enemy! :P can't wait for the knights. thinking about picking up more vikings too LOL
-
Well a good army builder right now while it is on sale is viking chess (for those who want a viking army) 24 dollars for 24 figures (not including the horse helmets and blocks that are rooks lol) i just bought two wish i could buy more.... I suppose if we wait long enough we may see this with new castle, and eventually there will be a sale on those too! :P I really hope they do some christmas time sets... the way they keep pumping out exo-force... i can't even keep up with that theme anymore, and now that they have the new castle.... i stopped collecting exo-force... I just bolstered my undead army today with a couple more of the the bone carriages.... and i bought a battle at the pass because i wanted one before they disappeared... man i wish i would have just bought two more bone mobiles! knights with no pants vrs skeletons = no contest. anyway... A set i would really like to see in this new theme would be a graveyard where the necromancer/evil mage is doing his recruiting. It would come with a small "crusade" of three knights that would try to stop him.

he could be citing high to keep others out of the business... also, i needed connecting pieces for my game, and good looking ones (if you want to sell a wargame your pieces have to look good nowadays) but that is besides the point... it only takes one good sculptor to make the proper specs for a mold. its going to be the same diameter every time once you know that diameter then you shouldn't be able to screw it up... so on a mold for a shako with no real detail, it should not be too expensive... even with prototypes.
-
I have had some experience with trying to find molders. I am currently trying to get a boardgame company off the ground, one of the games we have prototyped requires alot of plastic pieces. I mention this because it is the same process for finding injection molding (overall the cheapest method to mass produce) that this thread has discussed. I am still shopping around for a sculptor and a molder... but i wanted to say that i think brickarms estimate is wrong. However, getting molds made won't cost as much as he stated but will cost about 5000-7000 american. A good designer could easily figure out the interior head locking design on the first try, so i dont think there would be too much prototyping. The nice thing is it costs less to make a million pieces then the 10000 pieces that this community wants... so Having boxes of these things would be the end result, because who wants to pay 1000 bucks for 1000 when they can have like a million for the same price? lol. it costs more money the faster they shut down the press... Its really all about the molds, and i would suggest if that is the final product of this discussion (if someone really is going to flip that bill lol) that they make sure their mold has 4 - 8 different pieces in the set. That way they would get the better bang for their buck (molds are made a certain size like 8" by 8" or 3' by 3' and they can either be lots of the same thing on the "sprue" (that plastic piece that holds pieces together when you open a new model kit) or you can varry it... I would suggest perhaps a couple different hats, maybe some weapons, and or shoulder pads . cast in black, and then people could paint them if they wanted. Then press in a high volume a process 50k of each, sell them to the community and in a bricklink store.... good luck if anyone goes through with it. I don't know if it will break even. Even for fake shakos I don't know if I could swing over a quarter... now mass produce rifles with bayonets attached (or cooler, detachable ones!) then we would be talking!
-
Well that depends... there had always been three mast ships around while there were four masts. the four mast rigs are primarily used on Spanish galleons of the period. The basic heavy warship was usually three masts.
-
In my collection that is separated from me right now, i bought out a ton of rock raiders and used them as confederates, they had the right color kepi! These are nice uses for imperial officers... can you get those figs cheep though?
-
Don't get too attached to Johny Horton, he has some really good songs but he also has some songs that no American should be proud of. He was a very racist man. :( It just sends the wrong opinions of Americans when you hear over half of his songs are about killing black people. :( I have liked this tune since I was a kid though... plus animation = awesome

Nice little ship, and good coloring!
-
I second that.... i wish i could have bought more when they were cheap :( ug.... i also just checked out ebay... imperials up to around 5 dollars a man, this is up from about 3.60 average last year at this time. sad thing is most of the people bidding on these are probably right here LOL.... (I am not right now! lol, but my name is obvious to spot since its the same here as on ebay!) if they are not going to release a new pirate line, lego really needs to reissue a set with imperials in it... so the price goes back down :)
