The Lego Safe
WhiteHexagon replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I was just on my way over here to post the same story :) I must say it's quite an impressive bit of LEGO engineering! I was wondering what would be inside, looked like a jar of D20's or possible gummy bears!? wasn't too clear to me. Anyway there are some other good looking LEGO projects on the main website: http://www.bouwvoorbeelden.nl/home_eng.htm -
A sad day for the LEGO brick
WhiteHexagon replied to randomparrot's topic in General LEGO Discussion
What LEGO is trying to do here is get around their expired patents by registering the 2x4 brick as a trademark. A battle I think they already lost back in 1999. So this isn't going to change anything. It's been legal to build clone bricks for many years, since the patents expired a long time ago. They need to trust in the consumer is what I think. And with the improvements in sets we've seen recently, I think they are on strong ground. [edit] What I never realised before today was that the locking building block patents were originally of English origin! http://www.hilarypagetoys.com/ -
LEGO in Film & TV: Index of Appearances

I saw that episode at the weekend and was planning to post here :) I wonder who gets these jobs to build LEGO movie sets. The tower was massive, hang on a sec, let me grab a snap shot... -
Keeping LEGO bricks happy...
WhiteHexagon replied to WhiteHexagon's topic in General LEGO Discussion
hmm I have a few fleshies I could throw in the freezer It's only -20c, but might be a good test. Thanks all for the feedback! -
lifelites looks good, is anyone using them? I also found some optical fibre options that might be more suitable due to the very fine fibres that I could probably sit between the base plates. Plus it seems quite cheap since I can light many models from just a couple of LED's. Also saw some model train type lighting in the toy shops here, but again the cables were still a bit bulky.
-
I know they are shy about sunlight, and as we recently discussed, being stored in a stacked fashion. But how temperature sensitive are they? I'm not talking about sunblock for them, but rather will they need woolly jumpers in winter? eg is -30c going to be an issue? I'm thinking outdoor garage in Canada mid winter here...

Thanks for the tips all. re: trains - I'm a bit ebay shy about buying lego, I like everything to be new :) but maybe it's gonna be my only option, I just can't face the thougt of these IR based sets. Although I seem to remember my old rail had two metal strips down the center? and the 9v I saw on ebay was metal along the track? is the modern track stuff ok? because I can see the track is still on s@h at least for now. so i guess i'd just need some engines from ebay or the like, and a regulator of course. I seem to recall my origional train sets had signal switches too? that was great fun, two trains waiting on collision course and flipping the signals to see which survived! (I was young!) Are there signals for the newer 9v too? Maybe I should do some research re: lighting - I like the idea of fibre optics, should be possible to get some very fince strands and possibly sit them between the road plates around the town, since there is normally a small gap. Even tempted to drill out a few lamp posts (shock! I never though I'd consider to intentionally damage a lego part). Not sure how flexible the fibre is for tight corners, ie ground to up inside a lamppost, would probably need a small elbow joint if such things exist. Well I'm gonna do some more investigating, maybe pop into Zürich and check out the model shops and electronic shops for some ideas.

I'm moving house next year and I've already made sure I'll have space to rellocate my LEGO town! I'm even thinking to venture into some rail for the next town since I'll have around 3m2 extra space! Although it's 20+ years since I last had any rail, and looking around at todays offerings I can't say I'm very impressed, but that's another discussion. Anyway, while I was day dreaming of the new layout, I decided I'd really like to light my town. I don't just mean spot lights, although advice there would also be appreciated. But I'm thinking more about things like street lights and lights inside some of the rooms of houses. So I'm looking for advice/tips on options available. The only thing I've come up with so far is a DIY system of very fine wire and LED lights. Are there any ready made solutions out there? besides xmas lights which seem to have really bulky cables. Anyone doing anything similar. Normally I'm quite a purist when it comes to my LEGO, but I think lights would make such an improvement I don't think I can resist :) Peter

I wouldn't mind getting my game's website address on something like that Maybe it's all some marketing ploy for universe :( Although I think one washed up in Holland a few years back too. Maybe they are breeding somewhere!

So I had a go at liberating the 4x4's from an older Knights chess set. I took the approach of trying to melt the glue... 'tap hot' water didn't seem to help, so I added some boiling water from the kettle. [Kids, don't try this at home!!] I poured the water slowrly onto the back of the board while it was floating in the sink full of hot water. After a minute of so I had another go, and sure enough the pieces started poping off with the help of a thin pallet knife!! I'm not sure I melted the glue, maybe just softened the LOGO plastic itself enough to weaken the bonds. It took another two more kettles worth, and dipping/soaking between every 6-10 pieces depending of how stuck they were. The 4x4's had some trace of glue down the edges which I carefully scrapped away with a knife. Although this has removed the sheen from the plastic, I'm not too concerned because the edges are not so visible in the project I had in mind for these pieces. There is some white traces of glue visible on the undersides of the blacks pieces, but really it's not that bad and doesn't seem to interfere with connecting to other bricks. Just looks a bit untidy. And what comes of the white base board... well if your town is missing a small snow covered hill, look no further! Yes sadly the board warped under the heat. It's still in 1 piece but covered in glue, so I'm not sure it's worth trying to straighten. In fact, in the light of day I can see that it's pointless to even try and rescue the board, it's covered in glue, but better that way than on the 4x4's. Overall I'm happy with the outcome, I was expecting to break many of the 4x4's, but with the base board being so much softer it wasn't as bad as I'd imagined.
-
That what I was assuming would happen :( but what about the glue used? was it possible to remove from the 4x4s? if so how?
-
what do you think of the chance of unglueing the board? Has anyone heard of anyone doing this successfully?
-
thanks! any of the pieces/minifigs glued?
-
does anyone know if this set includes the evil glued parts problem? ie the 4x4's on the base board and figures, I remember one of the sets did, but can't locate which one now.

Looking forward to this game arriving, I just got my shipped notification from Amazon. Fingers crossed it arrives for the weeknd :)

wow, this game is looking great! I like the freeze ray the most so far, gonna make me some ice cubes :)

The new Workshop functionality is now online! This allows you to melt bricks down into more prefferable bricks. One way to get rid of all the pesky trees and flowers you've collected :) We tried a small tutorial, but the quality is a bit poor... Workshop Tutorial Cheers Peter

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles -- SPOILER ALERT !
WhiteHexagon replied to SWMAN's topic in Culture & Multimedia
I must admit I mostly watch it for the 'HotBot' Looking fwd to season two, haven't seen it advertised here yet. -
wow, it's sounding like this game is going to exceed indiana jones which I really enjoyed (to 100%) :) I hope the motion controls are optional, somehow waving things around doesn't always work best in these game imo. Anyway I have it now on pre-order, so don't expect any work on WhiteHexagon for a week or two following launch ;)

ghostport, sub-prime-central, abandonsville ? is your movie going to involve mass extention of mini-figs btw? ;)

Hi All, As many of you know, I'm still busy developing a plastic building bricks video game... I have a million ideas, but as always with these projects, time is limited. So I'm looking for some feedback on what people would like to see added next... * More minifig customisation * Female minifigs? * Larger buildings * Building interiors * More bricks * Some baddies! * Improved Builder tool * Tutorials and help pages * Better chat system * Guilds * Puzzle areas * Trading / Shops * Own discussion boards * other? These are just some of the areas that we are working on, but which of these do people think are a priority? or what would you like to see from the game? We know the playability is still quite limited, but we have some great ideas to share with you soon. We also need help testing each release, otherwise we can't fix the things you don't like, or things that don't work. So feedback is really appreciated. We are also trying to get some tutorials online, we know the help pages are pretty poor at the moment :( Next week we hope to release our new 'Workshop' function! This will allow you to melt down collected bricks into more desireable ones. Now if only I had that option for my real bricks! Looking forward to your feedback, good or bad! Peter

I wouldn't mind some more movie tie ins. Although maybe as online purchases only, and save the shelf space for more traditional LEGO sets. I was just starting to enjoy the movie tie-in minifig magnet sets until they stopped them. Although I think some more recent movies might create better sales. I'm thinking the likes of the matrix, alien vs predator (replace bionicle!), simpsons (replace sponge bob), and maybe a lord of the rings range with lots of amy building sets :) But my personal ultimate wish for a LEGO movie tie in would be Blade Runner! I've got the Indy fig ready, but it's not quite the same hehe. Peter

Another LEGO storage question...
WhiteHexagon replied to WhiteHexagon's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Nice quote! :) maybe in a dark environmentally controlled room too! The reason I started stacking them was to quickly see how many of a brick type/colour combination I have. I hate getting part way through a MOC and running out, allthough that seems to happen no matter how I plan the build :)
