"This is not suspicion. This is absurd." "Demonic possession is a very serious matter. Oftentimes the host is not even aware of it. I have regular contacts, and Baltarok was just opened to the rest of the world...one of them indicated to me he found traces of demonic power in Baltarok's leadership. I did my own reconnaissance, and narrowed it down to Tarvalk. Do you know the story of Azzurat? One man, consumed by the power of a Pandemonicon, effectively killed an entire nation. My priority is hunting down the source of the demonic threat." "And your first thought was to ally with a group of assassins." "The traces I found suggest a highly mobile form of demon. Any forewarning and it could simply find a new host. And clearly you don't believe me now, is there some reason you would have before? I have worked with Heroica twice before. When I heard you were arriving here in Baltarok to protect the clan leaders, I believed you might be more willing to listen to reason." "I would listen to reason, if I heard any."

"Sounds reasonable to me. Who knows, maybe you'll catch him in a good mood, and he'll plaster you into a nice statue for his study, art collector that he is," remarks Olmstyr to the Thief. "But I hesitate to think what that would do to your ego." "Surely if there's a trap it's gonna be sprung on Tarvalk. Right? They ARE still after the clan leaders...right?" "The information suggested as much...the perpetrators suggest otherwise. If they really wanted the clan leaders dead they wouldn't be holding back their teleporting marksmen." "We're ones to talk, I could swear up a storm with all these oaths," Olmstyr chuckled. "Pity. Here I was thinking we could let all five killers walk free." Tra-Serral rolled her pale eyes a bit. "I question why the color of your assassins matter so much to you." The heroes clamber down the ladder back to the ground, keeping the Gentleman Thief secured between them. Daske grabs the somewhat bizarre excuse for an assassin and shoves him into the arms of the nearest guard patrol. "Tell Karstaal we've got a special delivery for him. He likes dramatic theater, right? He'll LOVE this weirdo!" "I am wounded. Really." The Gentleman Thief grinned. "Just one more face for the collection. Maybe you'll see it again sometime." "Yeah, or maybe you can shove it somewhere real dark and nobody will ever see it ever again," remarked Daske brightly. "Bye now." With the third assassin taken care of, the party returned to the Vauno headquarters. After the chant, Zardalvohl finally seemed to be winding down. There was no so much commotion the heroes had trouble working their way down the streets. Still, they caught snatches of conversation from bands of reveling passerby. If Zardalvohl was really was mournful as the orcs claimed it once was, then their changes certainly seemed to be taking effect. Most everyone was in a positive mood. More than one group cheered the party as they passed by. For all the assassins they had to deal with, at was at least some relief to have their efforts recognized on such a broad scale for once. Soon enough they reached the Vauno's headquarters and, after bracing themselves for whatever trap awaited inside, Olmstyr yanked open the door, Tra-Serral swiftly gliding past him through the shadows. Her blade instantly found the neck of the fellow waiting inside...but he merely bowed his head slightly in response. "Do not move, suuld, or-" "I will fully submit to any restraints you deem necessary." He slowly set down his shield and folded his hands behind his back. After a brief moment of surprise, Tra-Serral whipped the wereviper's sword from its sheath, disarming him. "Wow. I think you might be the worst group of assassins ever." "Hmm. I can see where you might get that impression." The figure's voice was a low, oily hiss, but no less respectful for it. "But I am no assassin...at least, I do not consider myself as much. My employer might." "Either way. You're here. Exactly as we were told." "I was expected? How....hmm. Unexpected. As you can likely guess, my codename is the Red Death. I am probably not who you thought. Perhaps that is for the best. My true name is Soryx Dourskull. I am something of a demon hunter. I am working with this group, the Wandering Silence, because-" "You think my father is a demon." Soryx raised an eyebrow. "Possessed, actually." "Nazar dirark tan a zard bol, Durmsuuld. Dir nazrath anh wasted on us you scaly piece of vermin waste." Tra-Serral did not move her blade. "Wow. At least the nicer bit was in Common."

Heroica RPG - Quest#148: Once Upon a Time in Goetia
CMP replied to Sandy's topic in The Heroica Archive
Fair enough. "They ain't very bright, are they," remarks Atramor as the demons are just in time to fill the places of their dead comrades. He then lunges forward, the very air saturated with demon's blood, cutting into Amon with both claws and Andrealphus with both claws, both from the front row. -
Miderun finally takes Orokuul up again, admiring the blade's polished-ice sheen as she swings at Death's Rose A from the front row.

Heroica RPG - Quest#148: Once Upon a Time in Goetia
CMP replied to Sandy's topic in The Heroica Archive
In the interest of time, could you also have had me target anybody?? Isn't the next enemy in order usually targeted if auto-rolling and the current target(s) are defeated? Atramor takes a quick look around, struggling to find targets fast enough, and slashes at Berith with both claws from the front row, then does the same to Zagan. -
"Hah, cute. Afraid not, love: I was being hired to kill a man. I think you can guess who, hmm? I just figured rather than strike 'em while they've got the advantage, we take the advantage for ourselves." "Hmph. Thus the performance." "Waiting for my opportunity, of course! I am nothing if not opportunistic, my large friend. This was merely a job like any other. I am a man of many contacts and much ill repute, of course, but don't think this wasn't an easy gig to get ahold of. These wandering fellows pay very well but can be awful picky about who they hire. No doubt they saw value in my myriad skills and cunning disguises. Alas, it was not enough, for I knew as soon as I saw your raw experience that I was outmatched. With my gracious surrender out of the way, perhaps we might lay out some terms of an arrangement in exchange for my information..." "Term one, you will address me with the respect you would show any defeated, yet honorable foe, and as either 'the Gentleman Thief' or 'you Gentlemanliness'." "Term two-" The subtle whoosh of a cloak echoed from behind the Thief. He whirled around as the Vauno's hands flew to their weapons, as everyone's eyes fell upon the duo that had just appeared. "Our oath is broken. For now." The masked figure's voice was incredibly rough and hoarse from what seemed to be disuse. "Ah...here's one of my employers now." The Thief's eye twitched as he turned and put on an even brighter, faker smile for the figure, but it cut him off. "Your part is over. We speak to the heroes." The pair of them looked directly past him at the party. "Your quest proceeds with no small degree of success. Your progress is most impressive. Your apparent 'mercy' towards the assassins so far is noted. There remain hurdles to overcome." He looked briefly at the Vauno. "Tarokai grolakh tan Set, asht vihl adhakh eznakh ev droog. Sacrifices in war are inevitable, and it has been a very long war." "You have been told the 'when'. When you arrive, you will need to burn the flag. Then you will be sought out, and your quest will be completed, one path or another." "But for now, you are awaited by the Red Death at your headquarters. An offer will be made. An old wrong yet to made will be righted. Perhaps you will finish what your Founders did not." "Well- hang on- wait, my part is-" "The oath is remade. We will never speak again." The 'Pilgrims' turned and once more slipped right off the roof into the darkness below. The Gentleman Thief lunged towards the edge and looked down into nothingness. "...Always the goddamned freaks. No such thing as honest work anymore..." "How thrillingly vague." "You get the strangest visitors, heroes." Olmstyr put his hand on his weapon, and with the other hand he grasped the back of the Thief's collar, pulling him backwards towards the party. "Are we dropping this one off, or..." "What, from this height? That's kind of a messy way to kill someone, don'tcha think?" Daske clambered up the ladder Skrall and Boomingham had taken up. "So, that was an interesting Chant. Karstaal's fine, but he's still trying to figure out who paid for the lightshow up here, and I just saw two guys throw themselves off this wall, so...I kind of figured we were done here? What in the world happened?" "Clearly you do not have any great beast masters here. The best in Baltarok ride trolls into battle. Others have aepyorni mounts and kill before they are even seen. They are weapons of nature but weapons nonetheless." "Fine, but I am starting to question the point of these Fields again." Miderun lifted Orokuul back onto her shoulder. "I really do not see what killing some bugs will gain us."

Sorry about the delay. I had to transfer all my files (including the necessary picture) to my new PC. Naturally there were casualties. The Word document for this quest no longer exists. But we're getting ever closer to the end now and things should be relatively straightforward to the end. Around the city of Imaestym, the frantic chanting of the orcs, and the music seeking to drown it all out, subsided. The fractured groups of both heroes and Vauno were drawn like a moth to the flame to the apparent source of all the commotion. Boomingham, Skrall, and a shifty-looking man dressed for a performance stood atop a high tower, and Nerwen, Thalion, Olmstyr, and Tra-Serral were quick to join them. The man raised his eyebrows. "Ah...hmm." He blinked. "Clearly I was outmatched before I even started...but, nothing keeps the Gentleman Thief from collec-, well, let's say, honoring a contract, right? You're all familiar with the concept, I assume? Did you enjoy my performance?" "That's not how the Vauno or Heroica work." Olmstyr had his hand on his weapon already. "If you're in it for the money, then I assume a better offer will get you talking." "A man of discerning intuition!" The Thief looked sideways critically at Skrall and Boomingham then strode over to Olmstyr. "I'm certain we can figure out an arrangement to keep everyone satisfied and keep me from getting into any more trouble. I'm afraid I just have a penchant for it...like a moth to a flame." "Like a fat crow to a corpse." "Well, ain't you just the sweetest thing." The man shook his head. "Now listen. There's very little I can tell you about my employers...surely you understand they don't give us information we don't need. Their name, for example....a well-guarded secret, I can assure you. Perhaps, a loosened tongue might-" "You work for the Wandering Silence. They hire Blue Assassins, among others such as you and your allies tonight. They don't seem to have a particularly vested interest in killing our clan leaders. And it seems as though they can teleport themselves." "But if you do need your tongue loosened, Tra-Serral is very skilled with a blade." "...Hmmph." The Thief's eyebrow twitched in annoyance. He ground his mostly-fake teeth slightly. "Fine, what do you want to know?" We're still waiting on one minor loot division, then I will update stats, too.

Our GP should've gone up by 12. "Finally. You keep these as pets?" Miderun lodges Orokuul blade-down in the dirt for a moment of quiet as she straps her Orc Gauntlets onto her forearms.

Miderun repeats, again.

Atramor slashes Gremory with both claws from the front row, then does the same to Ose. Do I still get to steal gold with Theft even though it's not a guaranteed drop? -

I should be up to 56 WP. Atramor swallows both a Grand Potion and a regular Potion from the back row, sliding the lethal blades of the Mythril Claws against one another to produce a sharp ring in wait for its next wave of victims. "Next." -
Nice article. I always like going through some of the lore-based pages.
-
"Shut up, sword," snapped Miderun, hacking at Cat 2 from the front row.

Exhibit A.

Quest 150: I may not get an update in tomorrow, I'm getting a new PC up and running. But you're all at about the end of your battles. It's fine though, because it comes with a mouse, and it is absolutely maddening to try and run three concurrent battles when your mouse double-clicks half the time you just want to click once.

Miderun repeats, glaring at the sword down in its sheath.

Atramor slashes at both Aim and Vassago, twice, from the front row. -
I just saw that post and came here to say the exact same thing.
-
I was thinking maybe immunity to elements should be outright removed in favor of *Resistant to Fire, Water, etc* and maybe halve the specified damage instead. It would help at least to some degree.
-
I agree. Nobody makes nearly enough use of elemental damage and ether-using enemies.

"Well...let's get to it then, mates." Atramor slashes at Allocer and Baal with both claws from the front row. If they survive, he repeats. If not, he attacks Belial and Bifrons from the front row. -
Young Thrawn was leading armies pre-Episode I. I think Chiss might be longer lived.
