My "Siege of Minas Tirith" set has been put on CUUSOO at last! Go support it here! -
Having visited Paris several times, I can attest to - and recognize - the level of carefully honed details present in this impressive creation. You've excellently captured the Haussmann style and the general feel of a Parisian street. Very well done!

LOTR Project: The Return of the King
Nuju Metru replied to Nuju Metru's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Thank you both for your interest! I'm sorry I haven't published anything new lately; I've encountered a few issues with my latest set and it's been sitting on the MOC table for some time. I've realized I will have to buy a number of new pieces to do the location I have in mind justice, and that's something I haven't had the money or time to do as of late. Things have been busy. But, rest assured, I do still intend to finish this project, despite the setbacks I've encountered with it recently. I hope I can share more stuff soon. -
Thanks for the picture, deskp! They all look gorgeous... I'm so excited for this game!

LOTR Project: The Return of the King

Retrospectively, I agree that putting the Fell Beast into the Witch King Demise set would have made more sense, and also would've brought down the price point of Minas Tirith, both of which would've been good things. However, I needed to have a "small set" in my ROTK line, and I guess this particular scene seemed best for that. Location-wise, though, this really is a boring choice for which to do that - adding the creature would've been both more realistic and more interesting, and I think I could've probably come up with something else small to fit the bill. Alas, the sets are already photographed... Hopefully my next set - in the works at the moment - is a more sensible one! -
Thanks for the very thoughtful review! I own this set myself, and while I find that my falling columns feature works very consistently (and enjoyably), I do agree with just about everything else you've said. It's a fantastic set, and I'm in awe that you took almost as much extra effort to cover all its little details as the set itself did to replicate the movie setting. Very comprehensive review, great job!

I strongly second this. I was basically squealing like a fangirl through that whole movie.

Third set - "Witch King Demise" - has been added! -
The inside of the cavern is really nicely detailed! The lava looks great, especially the bubbly bits. The rock texture on the outside of the mountain is well-executed, though I think the overall shape of the mountain is a bit too cubelike - though I can tell you had a more SNOT approach to it, which naturally resulted in a box shape, I think more sloped sides would benefit this a great deal. The entryway is great, it looks very fluidly built into the rock around it, and I like the lava at the peak! Nice work.

Alas, no. I went and splurged online before that particular polybag was available... but I fully intend to go and snatch one up soon.

I'd really love to see a new Jango Fett minifigure, especially since they haven't taken advantage of that new helmet to perfect him as they did Boba. Anything even remotely similar to (ideally even more detailed than!) the LSWIII video game version is a definite must-have for me.

All of the LOTR sets bought at once... Unless you'd count the display cases I purchased for them to be an acquisition, too, that happened subsequently.

There's a lot of talk of multiple sets comprising a larger Minas Tirith in this topic. I don't think that's very realistic. There isn't enough differentiation between parts of the city, nor enough reason to differentiate, for such puzzle pieces to have marketability when released in tandem. In most cases, such smaller parts do not make sense as sets, because they're just fragments of a more cohesive and sellable whole. Plus, if TLG instituted such a plan, the LOTR shelf would be a mess of white castle-looking fragments, which non-LOTR fans would not understand or be attracted to buy. A multi-part Minas Tirith wouldn't sell widely enough or appeal to new customers. Besides, that many sets in a similar price range wouldn't be feasible, and would probably need to take up the whole line, which seems counter-intuitive for TLG. If TLG is going to make a Minas Tirith - and I would dearly like them to - it will almost certainly be one large set. I could see them plausibly doing an Uruk Hai Army-esque expansion structure set, as long as it had enough difference from the main model to be separately sold, but to break such an iconic location as Minas Tirith into multiple boxed modules, none of which would be recognizable alone, would destroy that very iconography as a selling point. It just wouldn't make sense.

I have no idea how many pieces it is, and I don't want to be the one to count. The next set might take some time to get finished and get posted. This one took so much out of me in terms of time and energy (and photo editing, that was a herculean effort alone). I know what all the sets are going to be, I've got them planned out... but you'll have to wait and see what it is! -
(Click the image above to visit the CUUSOO page) For reference: I. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING II. THE TWO TOWERS III. THE RETURN OF THE KING Howdy guys. This is the project topic for my custom-made sets of The Return of the King. This is the last installment of this project - see above for the first two - and if you're looking for an explanation as to why I am where I am now, it can probably be found there. The creations below are built to be like sets that TLG themselves would make (ironic, huh?). Each one thus has specific minifigures, and even an imagined price point. My sets are built for stability, detail, playability, and differentiation of sizes. So, without further ado, let's get started! Newest Content is at the Top! 3) Witch King Demise Eowyn and Merry have ridden into battle and faced many foes, but none as powerful as the Witch King of Angmar. The Witch King boasts that no man can fell him... Eowyn is no man. Imagined price point: $12 Features include: swinging base. Includes 3 minifigures: Meriadoc Brandybuck, Eowyn, Witch King 2) Caverns of the Dead To defeat the mighty forces assaulting Minas Tirith, Aragorn will need to seek aid in strange places. He leads his friends deep into the earth to try and win the alliance of the Army of the Dead. But the ghostly king has something else in mind... Imagined price point: $30 Features include: skull droppers, launching pad Includes 4 minifigures: Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Dead King 1) Siege of Minas Tirith The great Gondorian city of Minas Tirith is under attack by the armies of Mordor! Gandalf the White must rally the men of the west to defend their stronghold against the orc horde and their formidable leader, the Witch King of Angmar. Can the city last against Sauron's powerful attack? Imagined price point: $250 Features include: launching catapult, launching trebuchets, fell beast with 28 points of articulation, modular build Includes 14 minifigures: Gandalf the White, Peregrin Took, Denethor, Faramir, Witch King, Gothmog, Orc Captain, Gondorian Soldiers (4x), Orcs (3x) As always, check my Flickr set for more in-depth pictures. Thanks for viewing!

I did a brickbuilt door on my Bag End, like so: It's four 3x3 round-cornered plates, backed by a 4x4 plate. It worked with the scale I was doing; if you're going for something bigger, I'd recommend using 4 4x4 round-cornered plates instead of the smaller ones. Hope this helped!

LOTR Project: The Fellowship of the Ring
Nuju Metru replied to Nuju Metru's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
With some consideration and planning and etc., my ROTK sets should hopefully be more realistic as a group of priced sets. I don't plan to do any Hobbit sets. My original plan was to make the three LOTR movies as "sets"; when TLG announced their intention to do the same, I had already started my own project, so I resolved to finish it. Since I had already made plans, and TLG only overlapped with my sets in a few areas, I figured it'd be interesting, at least, to see how our creations would turn out differently. TLG has such an opportunity to do such a full job with the Hobbit sets, and so trying to compete with them wouldn't make sense. Besides, maybe I'll go back and fill in some of the gaps in my own line once I've finished... Making "The Hobbit" sets isn't really compelling to me, since TLG will do so well with them. -
I am literally in love with this project. The degree of game-accuracy really makes this project shine, and it's clear you put a lot of work into it. I especially like that you designed a few new, and plausible, pieces to fill necessary elements in the Portal universe. The test chamber set is my favorite model here; the modularity is a brilliant idea, and I can see myself fiddling around with different combinations of the test pieces for hours. I also love GLaDOS; even if some of her design techniques aren't as realistic for LEGO, the concept for the set is great, and it's also one I'd love to see. I'm totally blown away. Fantastic work!

I wouldn't have a problem with you linking to the pictures here, though such a creation really belongs in its own topic if you want to publicize it.

LOTR Project: The Fellowship of the Ring
Nuju Metru replied to Nuju Metru's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Indeed it does! I'm glad you liked my sets! Regarding pricing: The "Fellowhip" movie is mostly made up of small-scale scenes as you said, relative to the second two movies: there are no massive battles or fortresses. The movie, as such, lent itself more readily to me in smaller sets. The full tower of Orthanc was something I considered; however, both my lack of black parts and initial apprehension about the project stopped that idea in its tracks. I decided to rather take the most active scene there and make it a small set. The same is true of Bag End, in a sense: since there is not a lot of principal action that takes place there, and not many characters interact in that setting, I also made it a smaller set. I figured it wouldn't be realistic to have there be a very large non-violent set in the line, too. Rivendell was in my original plan of sets, actually. I tried to build it, believe me I tried, but I found that its lighter-than-air, hugely curve based architecture was impossible for me to capture with my selection of (by their general nature) rectangular bricks. It was a daunting prospect, one which I abandoned to focus more heavily on my Moria set. Insofar as that one went, it was originally going to be a good deal smaller. I conceived my "Fellowship" sets before I saw TLG's official ones, which is why our Morias and Weathertops ended up so differently; however, our shared decision to implement the Tomb of Balin in our respective sets is something I understand and am glad I did. It's an integral and iconic part of the Moria location; including it to a degree was important to me. And, since Moria is the headliner of this movie's sets, I made it as big as I wanted, then gave it the price point that fit. I like your set suggestions - if I'd had the same patience and confidence to make them then as I now have for my upcoming ROTK stuff, I think it would have been a perfect wave. Thanks for the ideas!
