Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - General Discussion

@karmajay Grenades require a minimum Explosives Proficiency to use based on their attributes. The Grenades you currently possess require an Explosives Proficiency of 1, as that is the highest requirement associated with any of their attributes. -

Nodding briefly to the Ornithun, Enson addressed Sigrún. "Not me thank you. Where are we going? Well..." he reached into his robe and withdrew the map, " the general plan was to head for the pass, though looking it over I think it might be good idea to stop over at the north shore of the lake first. Does that seem wise?"- 589 replies

Oquim is a gas giant. Hitting the ground after falling off the train is the least of your worries. -

@The Legonater @Kintobor @Classic_Spaceman Just a quick note; Illusory Clone only absorbs attacks, it does nothing against, say, grappling attempts. -

"I would like to, but honestly I feel pressed for time and I don't know how much opportunity he's had to form his opinions of the other two." He paused with a sigh. "Look, if you all have nothing else to say then we'll go with Gunnar and be done with it."- 589 replies

I don't think it'll come up often enough to be an issue, but at some point we may have to distinguish between cover and obscurement. I was thinking Ambush could add to initiative rolls in the manner of the gunslinger, but damage is good too. Ambush could also be done as a damage bonus when attacking from a hidden position, with the side effect of revealing yourself.
-
@Waterbrick Down So Assassins can shoot through solid concrete then? At this moment my thoughts are the following: Outlander, switch Tough with I Got This, leave the rest untouched. Assassin, Turn Ambush into a trait of some kind and make Mark their action, something like what you just proposed but with the effect of cancelling out obscurement rather than range.

"I see, thank you." Returning to his companions, Enson began speaking with a greater urgency. "Look, I like Gunnar, he seems like a genuinely good person and he certainly means well. But the benefits of having another combatant are nil and come with the risk of his dying, whereas avoiding hazards seems like it would greatly increase our speed and be less of a strain on our supplies." He spread his hands. "I will not argue any further if you're adamant, but I feel it's a mistake even if Sigrún is ultimately out for themselves."- 589 replies

All of this is fine, Supporting Fire can be altered to simply defend someone in weapon range and snipers can be given a sort of stealth bonus for not moving. Ultimately however you're probably correct in that they're thematically weak. The thing is this overlaps both thematically and mechanically with both of the Assassin's traits. At this point I'd just keep focus but make it more like the Scholar's action; it can be applied to any check but only a limited number of times. On the subject of the Assassin, how does Mark interact with Blinded or 'hard' cover like concrete walls? It honestly seems kind of vague.
-
As I've said before, I don't really think the Outlander embodies anything well at the moment (something you still haven't gotten back to me on). But the idea was prompted by the concept of single-proficiency classes Zepher mentioned. That was intentional for the most part, though I'd argue it's relatively easy to set up a situation where they only get one or either of their bonuses, and their action is less efficient than outright attacking so it wouldn't be used most of the time. Always moving the target away would be problematic though, how do you feel about random directions? Actually, no. They can't add their first trait to their action because it specifically triggers on the Attack action. Fusillade is an entirely separate action.

"Hmm, excuse me a moment." Leaving the group momentarily Enson sidled over to Sigrún. "Pardon me," he said quietly, "but how would you describe the other two guides?"- 589 replies

"Right," said Enson to his companions, "firstly, I don't like this Geomi character. As far as I can tell they intend to add a pair of newborn wyrms to their team in some inane belief that it will give them an advantage in the race. And apart from that his low prices seem to coincide with low effort on his part - note the lack of peripheral bonuses. As for Gunnar, what he offers sounds good on paper, but we do not really need another combatant. At the moment I feel that Sigrún is our best bet. In all honesty I would prefer to avoid as much danger as possible so that we are better prepared to face what we can not." He blinked. "Does anyone disagree?"- 589 replies

(OoC: As no-one claimed it before...) "I have it." said Enson, holding up the bag and shaking it in a pointed manner. "Look, would you mind if me and my friends took a moment to discuss this in private?" He waved the group over. "It'd only take a moment."- 589 replies

"Yes, that's all very good," Enson called out, having overheard the other two conversations, "but would you two mind being a little more comprehensive? What are your prices and what would we be paying for?" Leaning in to Gunnar and lowering his voice again he said "Thank you for your advice. I'll keep it in mind."- 589 replies

So I've just gone and changed the syntax of the class document to represent the proposed name change for combat checks. I've also altered the Detective's action slightly and changed the effect of the Hacker's 'Vulnerable Circuitry' trait. Also, inspired by the Berserker's role a a melee class and the Gunslinger's short range role, I've made provisional Soldier and Sniper classes as long range and artillery specialists specifically.

Simply put, they were decided against because they made certain aspects of a play-by-post game cumbersome and awkward. If this were a game played in live sessions it would be a less problematic addition. -

@Classic_Spaceman @Kintobor @The Legonater Again, shooting the barrel would be a Proficiency Check, not an attack. As such, Rallying will not add any die to the roll. -

Heroica: Glory Amongst The Stars - Rules & FAQ
Duvors replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in Heroica! The RPG!
Tools, Weapons, and Armor all provide auto successes on different checks. The bonuses they grant are not added to proficiencies or number of die rolled, but instead added after die are rolled to get the final value. For instance, if a player with Medicine 1 and a Utility Belt were to attempt a DC 3 Medicine check, they would first roll 1 die for proficiency, and 3 additional die that all proficiency checks get. In the example let us say the player rolls the following: (4,3,2,5,) This is only 2 successes, so the check would fail... except the player has a Utility Belt, which grants +1 success on Medicine checks. This additional success is added directly to the prior result, bringing the number of successes up to 3 and passing the DC, causing the check to succeed. Tools only grant their bonuses to certain Proficiencies listed in their stats, so a Utility Belt will add +1 success to only Engineering and Medicine checks. Checks with any other proficiency are unaffected. Weapons add auto successes to the attacking side of Weapon Checks, while Armor adds successes to the defending side. Both types of items can add anywhere from 1 to 4 successes depending on their Grade. These bonuses are not added to Proficiency checks, even if that Proficiency check is made with a Weapon Proficiency. Also, @Waterbrick Down, it occurs to me that the distinction between 'Weapon Check' and 'Weapon Proficiency Check' is rather difficult to parse. Perhaps the former could be renamed to Combat Checks? -

@Classic_Spaceman, you can't scan the cube (Try Something - Perception? Check) and Attack on the same turn as those are both full actions.
