  1. Man, this contest seems dead without WIP topics like all of the other contests. Cant wait for 2 weeks to be over!!!
  2. I was literally watching this video while you were posting it. I LOVE THIS!!! Great design, and very compact. Nice job
  3. I'm going to feed the fishing line through these: I'd rather destroy those than an entire beam or something, much cheaper to replace
  4. the picture isnt attached
  5. I did the same thing with RC motors i had laying around, except I wasnt using crawler motors, i have using a Fuze 4200 Kv brushless motor with a LiPo battery setup..... Lets just say that the LEGO gear was basically melted and trashed. TOO MUCH POWER!!!
  6. I am planning on using a system of pulleys for the actually hook assembly, but not to extent the boom.
  7. The only way to see if it works is to test it. I'm going to pick up some 50 lb test fishing long and some nylon string. And do some tests weight/stretch wise
  8. On the crane that was mentioned above that you used fishing line on was outside of the boom. My concern is that it will be inside and I don't know how much room their will b. I don't want it cutting through the plastic. EDIT: and their are special knots for fishing line, you can just google them.
  9. ok, thanks for this information, would not have thought of that until my LEGOs were destoryed. THANKS
  10. Is this something to be considered about??
  11. Very cool. When the video started I wasnt expecting him to be using a table saw and band saw.... haha
  12. I saw that video, my only concern is that my fishing line is going to be in between the boom sections. I looked at the 50 lb test and it is pretty thin, and i think 50 lb will not stretch under the weight of keeping the boom up. I mean i have used 50 lb test on some nice huge fish... so i think it will work on the crane. As for the hook cable, im just going to use nylon string. it is thin, but not as thin as the fishing line.
  13. I didn't even think of that!! Thank you!!!! Do u remember the test he used?? I'm at the store now and I'm thinking 50 lb just to be safe
  14. Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out what I can use to extend my crane boom for the contest. I want to use all string. My first thought was a higher pound test fishing line. It is fairly thin and strong. My only concern is that it will stretch. What r ur thoughts???
  15. Could someone give some video/picture advice. Since the video is required, i feel like those of us who have no idea what they are doing should have some kind of advice from those of you that do. Like; what is a good video editor for both windows and IOS devices?? Thanks
  16. I cant believe how psyched i am for this contest. I have solved a bunch of problems i knew i would have from the start. 2 weeks better b here soon, i want to show my progress!!!
  17. correct me if im wrong milan, but the crane shouldnt be too far out there. It can be any kind of crane that hoists. As for the documented proof, i am not sure, but im building a concept crane that their are only drawings of it. So i cant help you their.
  18. My boom is complete..... now just coming up with a way to lift it... It might just break 2 Large LAs in half..... HAHA
  19. i like either, i like limitations to tell me what all i can do and what i should focus on. but i also like having an open concept contest so i can build whatever i want. Pick a type of crane that interests you and start building haha
  20. Thanks Jim, this will b my first contest entry! I hope everyone likes it
  21. What about the people who already have the WIP topics?
  22. I agree with your "to post WIP" I will probably do this in the next week or 2
  23. I for one have been building nonstop (after all my college work is done) because I'm worried I won't make the deadline in time
  24. I wanted to get everyone's opinion on WIP topics, especially for contests. Personally i do not like the idea, because when you share a super idea to something, then it is no longer unique to your build, because you know someone is going to take it and try and make it better (engineering at its best). So I think it is better to just share the finished product so that the other members can not necessarily see the mechanics of the crane in this case. Just my opinion though, but i want to see what you think
  25. I dont think this contest is necessarily who can bigger the largest crane, so depending on how much time you have should be a size constraint. Sure some people are going to be making tower cranes taller than themselves, but you do not have to go as extreme.
