Bootleg Super Heroes minifigs - worth it or not?
agoodfella77 replied to KingPixels's topic in Community
These are a mix of true blue LEGO (each one that has been released officially in a set is represented), in addition to some DeCool and some Sheng Yang. My favorite is the MARK I (far left, front row) -- this happens to be one of my very first MOCs. -
I see, didn't realize there was a such a strict definition. I will delete my post.

Is that addressed to my post? Why isn't it purist?

Bootleg Super Heroes minifigs - worth it or not?
agoodfella77 replied to KingPixels's topic in Community
Here's my $0.02 cents on the subject: 1) I am first and foremost a LEGO fan. It's what got me started collecting, it's what my son and I have been able to bond over. Nothing will replace this passion. 2) As a consequence, I have spent a small fortune (relative to what I spend on other "hobbies") and don't feel bad at all spending my money on other brands. 3) What I absolutely don't buy are complete rip-off / knock-offs -- i.e. something that is readily available for purchase in retail stores / online, etc. 4) When I say "readily" available, I don't mean SDCC variants. And here is the rub: TLG knows that these are popular and since they have already released them to the public, it isn't hard to incorporate them into future sets. I totally get that they want to offer some exclusivity in the beginning as an SDCC exclusive, but come on -- 1 year+ on? And then to add insult to injury they are recycling the same Spider-Man figure for the 6th straight set? Meanwhile these SDCC variants are selling on eBay for 300+ dollars? It's crazy! Now my dollars are starting to look elsewhere for some satisfaction. 5) And they've found it to a large extent. This is simple supply and demand folks. The suppliers are filling a demand. Plain and simple. 6) Some customs are clearly better than others -- and therefore costs are associated. With the Chinese makers the variance is very high -- YMMV for sure. 7) Having said that, I am fairly happy with the ones I have purchased -- including Odin, the Winter Soldier, Carnage, a number of Iron Man variants, pictures here (posted under my Flickr handle "agoodfella77": -

What is your least favourite Super Heroes set and why?
agoodfella77 replied to Godtshep's topic in LEGO Licensed
My rankings on the new sets: 1) Hulk's Lab (the best so far out of the new MARVEL sets). My son loves playing with the exploding parts. I love the minifigures, Falcon is awesome, the new Thor is a nice addition, but the Hulk with purple pants, makes it worth it. Throw in Taskmaster and MODOK? I'm a pretty happy camper. 2) Cap vs. Hydra. This is a close second. I have to say that out of all the new MARVEL minifigures for 2014, Captain America is by far my favorite. It's the Cap we should have had the first time around, you could say it was "the hero LEGO fans deserved, but not the one they felt we needed right then..." It's almost like they took the previous Cap and powerwashed him. And left standing is a solder gleaming, in red, white and blue ready to kick some butt. 3) Spider-Copter. Again, because of the minifigs, Power Man is great teamed him up with Iron Fist already. Mary Jane Watson is a fantastic looking fig -- actually I rank it the best non-hero minifig after J Johah Jameson. The Green Goblin is horrible, but, meh, what are you gonna do? The vehicles I had no interest in and have already sold them -- effectively bringing down my "dollar per minifig" cost way down. 4) Doc Ock. Meh. Doc Ock is OK. Same old Spidey, I literally have 6 extra Spidey's now (more on this below). 5) Electro. I haven't gotten this yet (it's on it's way), but I figure it probably belongs here or tied with Doc Ock. To conclude, main gripe with the new Spidey sets generally is that they could have thrown in a new Spidey variant. As I mentioned, I've got 6 of these now (sure I traded a bunch, but still, would have been nice to get a newer version like the SDCC. Honestly, I get that they want to give out these exclusive minifigs at first. But then TLG could easily begin to rotate them into the sets a year later. Even if they marketed in a way to force customers to buy the largest set (like they did for Vitruvius in the Lego movie sets), at least we have the option. Nowadays, the SDCC Spidey goes for hundreds of dollars on eBay. It's ridiculous. -
Thanks! Can't wait for it. The minifigs look fantastic, I've been waiting for them for a long time. It's a real shame at how bad the Sentinel's look and how puny the Blackbird is however...

This is a good point. Perhaps in the end I will be getting this set as well. I'm definitely going to be getting Hulk Lab (the new Thor and new Hulk, Falcon alone make it worth it), Captain America and Red Skull, and the GG set. I'm on the fence about Electro and Doc Ock. -
I'm not even a big Flash (or DC fan for that matter), and my first thought was, "wow, why didn't they just stick as closely as possible with the original design and color?"

With all due respect, are you saying that with today's film technology they can't do a bright red suit? Of course they can. This is more aesthetics rather than a technical issue.

Although I agree that the GG kind of sucks, as a Marvel minifig completest, I will likely get this set for Power Man and MJ (if it only came with MJ though, perhaps I would have thought twice). I definitely wish they came out with a new Spidey variant though. I will likely not get the Spider-Trike set, and look to get Elektro separately. -
This is absolutely awful folks. Why do the film versions try to do this "darker toned" costume (e.g. Man of Steel)? Can't they stick with the original as much as possible?

Here are some of my overall comments (echoing many already said): If you are going to have multiple Spider-Man sets, why don't they throw in a costume variant or two, e.g. the Black Suit? For example, the new Hulk has the classic purple pants. Yes! I am definitely getting this set just for that alone. Thor, I like that they changed his outfit, but still no helmet? Can we please, please get a helmet next time? Wish they would stick with the classic comic variant for villians such as Elektro and Green Goblin Would be great to see some Fantastic Four sets and X-Men sets A few more Iron Man variants would be great (e.g. Mark I, V, Gemini etc.) Overall comment: much rather have smaller piece builds with higher quality rather than a bigger set - i.e. quality > quantity

These are all good points. And while I agree that Marvel's influence on the sets have most likely been the root of the poor quality -- it's still LEGO. It's still their name on the products, and in my mind it doesn't give them an acceptable excuse to hide behind.

I hate to say it, but it seems like there are a bunch of people giving each other high fives in the marketing department at LEGO who know its really the minifigures that moves the merchandise. It's no excuse to make a crappy set, but, let's face it, a lot of people are going to overlook this and go for the minifigs. But here is the warning shot -- if you continue exploiting your customers, there is a point where you start losing them...

Thanks for your comments, it's the official Iron Patriot. It's a great minifig, a shame Lego decided to distribute the way they did though.

Hi folks, Some of you may recognize this design which appeared on reddit about a year ago (single level). At any rate, a combination of that and my own tweaks, I present you [MOC] Iron Man Hall of Armor (Mk II): Top Row: Iron Patriot, Mk XVII (17 - Heartbreaker), Mk XVI (16 - Stealth Nightclub), Mk XXXIX (39 - Gemini), Mk XLI (41 - Bones) Bottom Row: Mk I, War Machine, Mk V, Mk VI, Mk VII Center: Mk XLII (42) Note: these include a number of custom minifigs (some I made on my own, e.g.: Mk I which I posted here: http://www.eurobrick...topic=82958&hl=) and others purchased from custom builders (some I believe have posted here as well). Here it is with my Stark Mansion and Hulkbusters Mk I and Mk II: My Hulkbuster Mk I was posted here earlier: http://www.eurobrick...topic=82656&hl=

Just griping a bit here, but it's really unfair that SDCC gets all of these exclusives... for those residing overseas particularly. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the promotion, exclusivity, etc. I get that -- but they should release these minifigures for sale to the public, even if it is a year or two later. Otherwise you're stuck or you have to shell out hundreds of bucks on eBay. Spider-Woman minifigure from SDCC is already bid up to nearly $500 currently. It's crazy. An incredibly tiny handful of people gain while the vast majority of LEGO's diehard fans globally lose... What am I missing here?

Thanks. The piece (standard Clone Trooper visor) will clip in. It takes a little bit of fidgeting (it is a bit of a tight fit), but it will go in and stay secure for the most part.
