Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return
Waterbrick Down replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
The Golden Dragon's demeanor never wavers as Atramor relates their tale. "I am a spirit, rogue, my time to impact this world is long past. My bones lie here and those of my dragon in Dastan. Considering how quickly the people of Eubric turned upon you, I can't imagine, you were entirely innocent, no? That they would so easily forget and so easily run to some impersonators, troubles me more than the falsifiers themselves. If the deeds you claim are true, than the error that overshadows them must be great indeed." The ghost inspects the vial Atramor holds up. "I am no alchemist, I could not tell you, even living, what the substance may be. As for stealing a likeness, there are many methods, magic, alchemy, powers from beyond our plane, their are even creatures and races who are known to change their shape or form. I cannot be your salvation, rogue, for if you do not realize what folly led you and the organization I founded to this end, you or your successors will simply wind their way down the same path in the future." "Ah you begin to see the heart of the issue, Dyric of Duplovia. Heroica was neither my nor my companions greatest achievement. No, it was the lives of those who sat under its roof. Those who came to us with neither family or friends and left with both. Those who lacked skill and left with confidence and competence. Those who only cared for themselves and left full of selflessness and compassion for those around them. We took farmhands and showed them the good they could do in this world and the pride in that. We took princes and showed them the humility that gains the respect of all men. Heroica was never a building that could be closed, it was a commitment to a community that would not stand back and idly watch the world destroy itself. It was a commitment to sacrificing oneself for the betterment of one's neighbor. It placed no absolute faith in either itself or any other institution, it put its faith in people." The Golden Dragon pauses. "The only advice I can give you is to find out the goal of these impostors, find out what they are after. If not that, their source, all things have a beginning. My companions and I did and thus so must these impersonators." -
"Demon? What are you talking about Ezeran." "Waldorf, what's wrong with me? What's going on? Everything's going... black." "Just hold on, we'll think of something." Boomingham strides forward kneeling at the maid's side and emptying the essence upon her. Nothing happens. "Waldorf... you were never late. You... you came into my... my life, exactly when I needed you. Don't sit around waiting for me to... to come back." As the heroes watch, Annabelle's body shimmers and then turns to a pile of silvery dust. Waldorf sits quietly by the woman's remains. "..."
-
As the mages begin their spell work, a familiar figure comes running up to them. "Waldorf! There you are, you are so late for our date..." Waldorf goes pale. "Anna... Annabelle? You're, you're..." "Overly attached to you?" Annabelle smiles and goes to embrace the mage. "Dead." Waldorf pushes her to arm's length. 'Dead? Ha! Oh Waldorf, is this another one of your wizardy jokes?" The two mages expend their full ether reserves of ether to dig a shaft 30 meters deep. As they do, the ground beneath them begins to shutter and shake and suddenly collapses sending the heroes, Waldorf, and Annabelle tumbling down into a giant sink hole. From the light filtering down from above the heroes can see they are in a vast cavern with a multitude of tunnels leading in and out. White roots permeate the entire room and mounds of fungi are spread along the cave floor and walls. Most of the heroes had managed to land unscathed, a grouping of tall mushrooms breaking their fall. Annabelle however lays off to one side, her body broken from the plunge. Waldorf rushes over to her side. "Waldorf... Waldorf..." "No, no, no... not again, not again!"

QM Note: The names are indeed supposed to line up, he still doesn't know/remember who Lucifage is. That's on me for not rereading CAT. Atramor pockets the silvery dust in a small unused potion bottle. "Everybody stand back, this could get... freaky." The mage smiles before starting her incantation. A sickly blue glow begins to radiate from the corpse until with a flash, the gaunt visage of Yuliana Tiamateus floats before them imposing as ever. "Who... dares... disturb... my... rest?" "Umm, she's all yours, guys." Chesterine goes and stands behind Matthias. QM Note: Fixed. -

QM Note: Knew I should have dug a little deeper for lore. Sorry to put a damper on things, but I'm going to have to go back and retcon things, name and such, my fault for making sure I didn't have all my facts straight about what is canon so far. Chesterine inspects the body. "Umm... this is really old, I think if we try to move it there won't be much of a body left." -

"Allyin' yerself with such dark forces, heroes? What have ya become?" Hoke slings a Mulled Wine to Atramor as the Rogue Thief begins the ritual. Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return
Waterbrick Down replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: No one is currently Doomed, dealing damage to the Doomsayer will impart the effect this turn and on. If you'd like to discuss the actual mechanic, I'm OK discussing it PM, in the discussion thread, or if you'd like to wait till the end of the quest for the QM Lounge, that is OK too. To some extent I'd rather have those discussions sooner rather than later, so as to improve this last quest as it continues as opposed to waiting till the end and wishing it had been changed/explained earlier. I will say that this battle is not intended to be won "mechanically", it can be and there is a cost to winning it, but there are other things to be gained than just a simple victory. As to the effect itself, as the final quest of Heroica, the stakes and consequences are intentionally high and character altering. QM Note: Fixed, thanks for pointing it out. -

Dyric revives Chesterine as the heroes continue their tried and true strategy. The Party cannot seem to penetrate the Founder's defenses, but thanks to Kiray's Aura the group is able to survive another round. With each strike, Vindsval dashes in with a vindictive strike against the barbarian as Throlar quickly changes out his equipment. After a few moments the Walking Mountain downs a remedy and is returned to his natural size, towering over the party. "I was investigating an outbreak of some sort of demonic plants in the garden. They seemed to have developed some sort of root structure centered in the park deep underground. While investigating I found this hideaway, but it only leads to a sealed off entrance to the Hinckwell's manor. Then I got really tired... and there was a voice... I couldn't make quite make out what it was saying, but I fell asleep... dreams... they're the only thing I have left to remind me of my sweet lost Annabelle." A tear forms at the edge of Waldorf's eye.
