Heroica RPG - Quest #128: A Study in Red Death

"This house wasn't quite five stars when I bought it. I tried to fix everything up but I never got around to that hole. No humanoid person could fit through it, but people his size probably could." Ralli points at Mhinak. -
Don't forget his big legs! Very. Followed by Eyepatch. Best item 10/10.

Heroica RPG - Quest #128: A Study in Red Death

The heroes position themselves around the house. Mhinak covered the left windows while Germ covered the right ones. Nalguz, Boris and Na'im covered the front door. Only the small hole was left uncovered. QM Note: Did I miss someone? -
Heckz stops criticizing Sheherazade when a stranger addresses him. "What do you w-" Oh Hel, look! Finally someone with some sense of fashion, some sense of style, some sense of humanity! Still doesn't outmatch me, though. "Hello. Would you like to join me in criticizing this woman with a brutish sense of style?" "You aren't actually drinking water that's just my spit." Heckz makes a fake laugh and turns to Warlen again. "Oh, the old hag, can you believe her jokes?"

Are you proud of yourselves now? Hmm?

"Yes. My interest in ether and scrolls was what got me kicked out of the alchemist recruitment when I was a young boy. That Guild isn't fond of magic, apparently. I did become friends with Alphonse, though. He was my star, my perfect silence. My inspiration. He still is, but the Guild of Invision doesn't have a spot in my heart anymore." "I know this house is not 'Particularly defendable', as you put it. It does have it's benefits, though. It doesn't have much detail, so it blends in. It's also right next to the forest, which means free ingredients for me. Not that it matters, though. Dr. Cula s still my friend and I doubt he would steal from me. It would even ruin his reputation in the Guild. And this is the only floor of the house. I don't have much use for a 'bed' since I hardly sleep." Boris checks the window and finds no bars or anything of use for defense. QM Note: You can cover two windows on one side since they are very close to each other. Germ would need to specifically state which windows he covers. Will he cover the one ones on the right or the ones on the left? Germ looks through his Magnifying Glass and finds no hidden Red Assassin in the house except for Rillo. When he goes to check him out he finds only blood and a fancy cape. He looks through the rest of the house and finds that the walls are full of erased writings that he couldn't possibly comprehend. "Are you all in position?" -

"I did tell my friend Dr. Alphonse Cula. You do know who he is, don't you? The main alchemist in the Guild? He doesn't want anything to do with the assassins though, so I doubt he told on me. My nephew came to my house vomiting blood. I have absolutely no idea if anyone knows he is here. And, yes, I do plan to give him this potion on this very house. What benefit does it bring me to do it outside in the cold?" "You can go outside or stay here. I don't care at all as long as you guard every vulnerable spot in this house." "So, you do speak. I was beginning to worry of my choice for a party leader. Actually, I did. The day when I said I had 'problems with the potion' was actually because of some red assassin interference. He messed my potion up a little bit but I managed to blind him just before I killed him. I didn't want to post that in a public area, though. Imagine what the Town Watch would do with me. Anyhow, I put the man's body in a barrel and did what the old Lord of The Blue Heaven did back in the day. As I said, I'm just finishing up. You can go ahead and put yourselves into whatever position you like, if you don't have any more questions, and I'll start making the cure progress." -

Ralli sighs. "Do you want me to explain the whole thing again? The leader would want the cure so that no red assassin buys it. Otherwise the organisation will just be a cheap copy of the Blue Assassins, even though those are actually cheap. I bet he might even have send people to kill me already. And the Red Death is magic. You think that it's normal for someone to break a vow or an oath and suddenly start bleeding from everywhere possible?" -

Cutcobra replied to Cutcobra's topic in The Heroica Archive
"I assume you don't know anything about the Red Assassins or the Red Death. Good thing I did some research on them, so I'll start filling you in: The Red Assassins are the most professional killers in all of Uland. They are known for never failing to do a job, otherwise their immediate death awaits them. They swear a vow before joining. The vow of the Red Death. I did not find the exact words of the vow in any of my tomes but I did find out what they included. If any living being sees a Red Assassin fight and is not killed, the Red Assassin suffers the Red Death. If a Red Assassin doesn't complete a contract, they suffer the Red Death. If a Red Assassin tells anyone who hired them, you can guess what they suffer. The red death is mostly an internal bleeding. I have cures for such nonsense, but this Red Death just keeps reappearing and reappearing. Like some magic is involved in it. So, you can see why the boss of the Red Assassins, if they even have a boss, wouldn't like the idea of a cure for the one thing that his or her reputation is made of. And you can see why I like the idea of this cure. Just imagine all the sad beings with all that gold, regretting their choice for a job. "*coughs even more blood*" "... And my nephew, of course. How tragic it would be for him to die such a painful death." -

"Hiring you primitive mercenaries is just a precaution in case any assassins find out about my little elixir and decides to steal it. Or maybe some being of low intelligence decides to try and take it from me to keep all the credit for himself. You are just here to keep an eye out on your surroundings and make sure no one robs me of my prized potion." "Sure. I have wasted quite a few tonics on slowing the red death. It is inevitable, though, so I better finish the cure before I run out of tonics. And before he dies, of course." Germ takes a quick look around the place. He finds out that there are two windows on the right wall and the left wall, making it four windows total. There is a little window just above the door. The wall opposite of the door has absolutely no items on it, except for the fact that there is a small hole on it. No human could possibly fit through it. He also realizes that all four sides of the house are really close to the Eubric Forest. He then notices all the valuable consumables lying around, just ready to be taken by a rogue like himself... Ralli gives him a deadly stare for that, though. -

Without knocking first, Mhinak barges into the house while the rest of the party followed. Nalguz couldn't enter, though, for his body was too big for the door. They found the man who previously went inside the hall to post the directions of the house. "Tarok! Away with you, assassins!" After noticing that the heroes didn't have anything red on them, the alchemist was relieved. "Oh, so you are the Heroica bunch I hired. I should have hired people with more intelligence, who actually had manners to knock on doors before entering a man's house. I am called Ralli Bookeater. A mocking name given to me by my ex-tribe in Baltarok. It was their last joke. Anyways. I was just adding the finishing touches to my cure. Do you have any questions or do you want to prepare positions now?" They then saw an orc with red clothes, lying on a pool of blood and coughing. "That's my nephew. Rillo apparentley didn't finish a contract and I succesfully casted sloth on him. That slows the red death quite a bit. I came p with the idea to make a cure for it, and now here we are. Say hi, Rillo!" "*cough *cough*" The alchemist notices Nalguz outside. "Sorry, I don't have a a special door for whatever you are. Probably a werespider. You can hear from there, can't you? Or do I need to give you something to grow some ears?" -

The alchemist orc enters the hall yet again. The stains on his coat were no longer there, although he still looked stressed. He posts a notice on the questboard and gets out quickly. Heckz gets the feeling that someone will really want the Wyrd Shield and the Lovelorn Wand, so he gets them out of the list to give someone he deems worthy. ~FOUR SAYL~REPORT TWO HECKZ BRUTENHAL IPH U WANT ANEE~ -Spellbound Gloves (Spellpower +5; handwear), costs 75 gold.
-
Heckz enters the hall once again. He immediately goes to check in if anyone wanted some of his stuff. Apparently they didn't. Fools... He goes to sit in his chair once again to criticize the salon keeper inside his head once again. He pulls out Dr. Cula's card he once got and stares at it intently, trying to make out the words.
-
Shouldn't all this be discussed in the Theatre...
-
"Scheherazade won't talk to me anymore because she thinks I keep criticizing her. She is quite right." "Barbariccia? How does everyone know about her if she keeps being hidden. Whatever. I'll ask the other heroes in the hall." "Oh, you mean Elpha- boo? That B won't sell me that 'Fifty Shades of Bley' for some reason. I would take it from here but I can't read the letters in the cov- I MEAN; My selfless spirit is above stealing." "Bye... mister... hairy... something... bye!" With that, Heckz quickly leaves the library.
-
Heckz heard what the scholar had to say with quite a lot of interest. Of course. Why do they hire apes to this organisation? "Dr. Parecelulitisblahblah... " Said Heckz to himself, almost shocked. "Don't the nords know something about Helvetia?" Elijah... or Edwin or Edward or Eric or whatever his name is... "Wait, what?! She's in this city? What's she called? I'd like a chat with her. And if she's pretty enough I might show her who eats who... if you know what I mean... Continue." "Another trip to that Void thingy? No thank you."
-
"Wait... is immorality not a word??" Heckz tried to realize his mistake, sweating in the progress. "Is it something like imnorality or... immortality! That's it. What are the ways to reach immortality? You know, not aging."
-
How about having Smargdaea's evil twin sister. ... Or better yet, the gender-bended evils: Smaragdeus, the evil twin brother who instead of a lust for gold has a lust for fire, and The Dragonatrix, the girl who is a relative to the Dragonator and is just envious of him.
-
Heckz enters the library. He didn't see anyone so he just waited whilst 'reading' a book so he could appear smart. When Byblos finally showed himself, Heckz backed a few meters away in case of lice. When he was at a safe distance, the sorcerer spoke to the metasimian. "Excuse me, ap- gori- mo- sir! I'll assume that you are the keeper of this place so I have a quick question: What are the known ways to achieve immorality? Did someone do it without having to make any of these 'ways'?" Heckz still didn't know the difference between immortality and immorality.
-
First off, I'm not one to make a whole book criticizing the quest, so I'll make this quick: Unlike your other quests, Kinto, this one I didn't like very much at all. The inns were dull and there weren't much NPCs to talk to after the first inn. Rollinger also felt like the stereotypical "goody goody paladiny" type. At least to me. Aside from that, the first inn had nice NPCs to talk to, the Rollinger "plot twist" was unexpected (was there any way we could have avoided that? )and the PM part was also interesting. The PCs: There isn't much to be said here that hasn't been said (alliance with Eric when they could have been potential enemies, Throlar's rage, etc). I just want to know how a supposed diplomat says phrases like "Shut up" when he hates someone, Lord Duvors. Shouldn't he say something snarkier or is that just his character?
