Except that the Dirge is 100% sure and not only revives everyone but keeps them alive for the remainder of the round, as well. But I'll consider lowering it back, if people are that shocked by the change. -

How is it still overpowered? Do you realize that Level 30 players have 40-50 points of ether, so if the Educated Hits worked the other way, they would get that big of a bonus to their attacks by default. This way around, they have to work to spend the ether to get a bigger bonus, and spending 50 ether isn't as easy as it sounds. -

Seeing it used in Quest#93 made me realize how powerful the song is, so the higher ether costs prevents it from getting overused. -
Oh Flare, is nothing ever good enough for you?

"That would be 100 gold, please. Thank you and have a wondrous evening in Vega!" The clerk takes 100 gold from Sarge, and two grating stones magically appear on the counter. "Now don't get cheeky with me, sir. Our instructions clearly say we can only sell items that exist in the world. As for the prices of the items you asked about... Letter of Recommendation - 1000 gold Fenghuang Essence - 60 gold Arc Potion - 50 gold Wyvern's Breath - 50 gold What would it be?" -
"[After lingering between different planes of existence for a hundred years or so, you tend to pick up things. You are still too attached to living to know what I am babbling about, aren't you? Anyway, the Void Eaters are like the garbage disposal units of the rift between time and space - they eat up organic physical material that gets lost here. They are not evil, per se, just omnivorous.]"

And here's a new take on Minstrel's Battle Songs. Not much needed changing after all, just the fact that the Minstrel is always included in the turn order and is thus susceptible to Free Hits and AoE-damage. Does everything look okay now? Battle Songs: Instead of fighting, a minstrel can choose one song to sing for a varying cost of ether. The Minstrel must be listed in the order of action, and is susceptible to Free Hits and area-of-effect damage. Each song lasts at most until the end of the round, or if the Minstrel is hastened, until their second turn. Sealed-effect prevents singing. Nanny’s Lullaby – Makes all enemies fall asleep instantly. Costs 1 ether. Ballad of Bravery – Doubles the attack power of the rest of the party for the remainder of the round. Costs 3 ether. Rapid March – Allows two turns per round for the rest of the party for the remainder of the round. Costs 3 ether. Lucky Chant – Improves the battle results of the rest of the party for the remainder of the round (the die is rolled twice per turn, and the better result is used). Costs 3 ether. Love Serenade – Restores 10 health to the rest of the party instantly. Costs 5 ether. Esoteric Melody – Restores 5 ether to the rest of the party instantly. Costs 5 ether. Hard Rock Anthem – Gives 10 SP to the rest of the party for the remainder of the round. Costs 5 ether. Tango de Resistencia – Gives immunity to magic to the rest of the party for the remainder of the round. Costs 10 ether. Angelic Aria – Causes light-elemental damage equal to the minstrel’s level to all enemies instantly. Costs 10 ether. Dirge of the Phoenix – Revives all knocked out allies with 1 health for the remainder of the round. Costs 20 ether. Minstrels can learn new songs during their travels. -

Some more edits. I considered it, and added wands as a usable weapon type for the scholar. The mechanics behind the Shield-skill Lecture are now better described, and the skill no longer uses any scroll "in vain". Scholar – This academic researcher wields the power of knowledge. Additional Health: 6 Additional Ether: 9 (+1 per level for classes without base ether) Weapons: Scholars can use throwing weapons and wands. They are also talented with scrolls. Job Trait: Arcane Wisdom - Scholars can spend ether to get a hint on any puzzle or riddle that they encounter - the more ether they spend, the more revealing the hint is; Well-read – Scholars can use any scroll with a 2/3 success rate; Glossolalia – Scholars can speak any language and communicate with any sentient being. Battle Style: Scholastic – Scholars are most efficient with a vast selection of scrolls at hand. 1. SHIELD: Lecture – The scholar gives the target a proper teaching, using all the scrolls in his inventory at the same time, each with a 2/3 chance of success. Scrolls granting negative effects are aimed to the target, while those granting positive effects are aimed at the scholar. The scholar can only use as many scrolls as his remaining ether allows, starting from the one listed first in their inventory. The scrolls that grant pre-existing effects or ones the target is immune to will not be used. 2. CRITICAL EDUCATED HIT: The scholar attacks the target with strength equal to two times their weapon power added to their level and the amount of ether they have spent. (e.g. WP 15 x 2 + Level 30 + 5 ether spent = 65 damage) 3. EDUCATED HIT: The scholar attacks the target with strength equal to their weapon power added to their level and the amount of ether they have spent. (e.g. WP 15 + Level 30 + 5 ether spent = 50 damage) 4. MEDITATE: The scholar concentrates to regain 1 ether. 5. DAMAGE: The scholar is struck by the opponent’s attack. 6. SPECIAL GUARD: The scholar is struck by the opponent’s special skill, but has a ½ chance to be protected from any negative effects caused by it. -

Erik quickly recovers from the blow he got thanks to his ability to rest anywhere. "Sorry about that, mate. I will surely join you, the fate of this prestigious Academy is on the line! I feel invincible!!!" "Hey, I can fight, too! I was known as 'Bloodnose Carrot' when I was a little gal at the Garbage Heap, after all." Both Doctor Brimstone and Carrot join the party, but they are weaponless. At that moment the whole building trembles, and a huge CRASH comes from the East Wing. The party rushes to see what caused it, but stop as they see an enormous monstrosity eating away the building. "Holy crap! There goes any chance of taking a nap at the Student's Lounge!" The little statue of the late Provost Bohring suddenly talks to them all. "[What are you lot gawking there?! That is a Void Eater, you will stand no chance against it! Heroica RPG- Quest #96: Tying up Loose Ends
Sandy replied to Scubacarrot's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: Exactly what I was going to ask. Had to even go back to check the picture of the room, but couldn't find anything like that... "Yes, Zoë, it is exactly as my companions explained", Ellaria said, grabbing the infiltrator by the arm. "We must get out of here quickly, I do not like losing my touch on the ethereal flow at all..." The lack of magic was palpable to the druid. It surprised her, since she had lived with the presence of the ether flow all her life. It felt like one of her senses had suddenly been robbed from her. -

The heroes decide to visit Unikitty's Dream Shoppe first. Inside, they are greeted by a woman wearing a pink mask resembling some hideous creature. "Good evening, gentlemen! I am Jolene, but you can just call me Jo. Is this your first time visiting Vega and Unikitty's world-famous Dream Shoppe? Then allow me to explain how things work around here." -
Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Sandy replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
Sigh... This discussion is running in circles. The whole point of me posting the class to this topic was to get suggestions on how to make the class more interesting. All ether-based classes can use Scrolls, so having a class that doesn't do much else is useless. That's why I grabbed onto Cutcobra's suggestion about the hit bonus. That's right, I did not take the rare positive effect scrolls into consideration. You're right, but on the other hand, an expert class shouldn't be good at every situation. But maybe I'll make some amends to the Shield-roll.... -
The NPC Walbartan rolled a successful Special Guard in the mutant battle in Quest#100.
-
Nope, the way it works is that hastened heroes do not suffer from any more Free Hits than others. The logic behind it is that Free Hits are divided as evenly as possible between all heroes, and there's not "two Arthurs" in the battle, Arthur is just fast enough to act twice.

Umm, you do realize they would be more powerful if the attack bonus was their remaining ether? Since that would be the default situation. -
The shake does nothing to a dwarf that has passed out, but the slap finally wakes him up. The doctor's eyes fly open, and at the same moment his fist hits Erik on the nose, dealing a whopping 38 damage and sending the shaman flying across the room. "Ha! That's what you get for disturbing my slumber!" the doctor says gleefully and bounces up. "But now I feel better than ever! Ready to face whatever demon or ghoul comes my way!" "Man, what did you drink? Cause I want some of that too!" "My apologies, Miss Carrot, but I think the storage is in desperate need of a refill. I had to take a few swipes to settle my nerves, you see." "Hohoho! Hugin, you old drunk!" What will the party do now that the alchemist has been woken up?

The escort takes five more gold from Throlar. "Thank you, kind sir. This way, please." Periwinkle motioned the heroes to follow her. First she took them to a peculiar, pastel-colored house with a glittering roof. "Here is Unikitty's Dream Shoppe, a shop unlike anything else. There you can wish for any consumable item in the world, and your wish will come true! With a price, of course. Say hi to Jolene for me if you visit there." She then took the party next door to a house that oddly resembled a bearded wizard. "Next we have The False Wizard, the favourite tavern of witches and magi alike. Drink your belly's full of butterbeer and druid fluid, served along with a hearty laugh from the matron Grimelda." Then they walked to the largest building on the square, which was made from all green bricks. "This is Vega's main attraction, The Emerald Palace Casino. Enjoy a game of Triple Magic or Lucky Clams there, or get wild with the new craze, a card game called Decamon. All courtesy of the Emerald Emperor himself." Finally they came to a stone mansion with a big heart on top of the door. "And our final stop is Château des Coeurs. That is Charisian for 'the Castle of Hearts'. There you can indulge in carnal delights with me or one of my many sisters and brothers." Periwinkle winked at Eric. "Our own Queen of Hearts, Glimda La Rouge, makes sure you will get your money's worth of enjoyment." The escort took the party back to where they started from. "That concludes our tour. If you want a private tour later, you can catch me at the Château. I have to warn you, the fee is not going to be just 10 gold then. Have a wonderful time at the City of Sin!" When they get to the lavatory, the party finds out that the pipes have run dry because of Rusalka flooding another lavatory with the water. "I am certain that either a remedy or a good old smack in the face will wake our drunkard colleague right up." "Actually, Hugin Brimstone belongs to the Guild of Invision. He is a prominent alchemist, so he might be useful for our cause." "Well, I don't know how send myself in the box, so I'm kinda stuck here with you guys." "I MADE A PROMISE TO MISS KARIE. BUT I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE YOU..."

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Sandy replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
I already explained that Scholar's speciality is the scrolls, so we want to encourage their use. Thanks for all the suggestions on the weapons, but creating a whole new mechanic for a weapon type that just one class can use sounds way too much for me. I think I'll keep just the throwing weapons, and books can be a kind of a throwing weapon. -
