Death of Lego Investing? Rerelease of Taj Mahal
MAB replied to Doom2099's topic in General LEGO Discussion
OK, so rephrase the hypothetical question. If you had any opened set that would easily sell for $100 on the open market, but you paid only $10 for it originally and no longer want it. Would you sell it for $20 to someone else? If you did how would you feel if they then sold it for it's then current value of $100? Would you be a scalper if instead of $20, you sold it for $100? For me, value is not what something cost. It is what something is worth. And it is worth what someone is willing to pay. So in the example above, if you sell for $20 then you have undervalued it. It doesn't matter than you made a profit on it compared to the original price you paid. It was worth $100 at the time you sold it. -
Death of Lego Investing? Rerelease of Taj Mahal
MAB replied to Doom2099's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It is an interesting dilemma. Let's say the going rate for a new and sealed Spartan, for example, is about 15.00 Euro. So if you put one on eBay or bricklink at that price it would sell quite fast. If you had one or a load of them, would you sell them to someone else for say 6.00 Euro, a bit above the original price? How would you then feel if they sold them at the going rate? To me, selling things at a price that buyers are willing to pay is not scalping. -
Does (not) enjoying a movie/series influence your purchase decisions?
MAB replied to Flieger's topic in LEGO Star Wars
It's a bit early to judge, episode 9 isn't even out yet! I also subscribe to the mantra of buy what you like, don't buy what you don't like. I have mainly OT sets as I enjoy those movies the most but also like the sets, but I have a few prequel sets too even though I'm not such a fan of them. -
It is lucky that they didn't call it Antarctic! Different place and all that. :-)

They did have the instructions online for a while, but they have now removed them. It makes a nice workplace for a City, such as an architect's or printer's or designer's office.

Yeah since it is an Inside Tour set, it is very rare. And when people do sell them, they often want a significant amount of money for them, as the tour costs a lot. So they often try to sell them at $2000-3000 USD.

They did do national flags recently again, for the exclusive LEGO tour set: commemorating this event: They also did some Union Jack ones in the Big Bentley Bust Out set from CARS but that was 7-8 years ago now. I quite like the built flag poles with the flag element compared to the vintage molded flags and it would be great if they issued such a sticker sheet for more general use. I wonder if it would be a problem, causing complaints of why haven't you done MY country? Although there is always the non-purist route of printing your own stickers or using non-LEGO ones that fit. There are loads of LEGO sticker books produced, including a CITY one. I haven't checked the most recent one to see if they do such stickers in there. Normally they are figures and sets, but it would be great if a few of the pages contained stickers designed to fit on specific LEGO parts such as flags, triangle and circular road signs, street names for 1x4 tiles, etc.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
MAB replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
At some stage in probably the next 25 years there will be a Post Office, and that leak will have been right all along! There will be minor problem like a different set number and totally different design, but the idea was right after all. :-) -

I guess different people see different things. When I saw the Jungle sets, I saw updated Outback. When I saw Pharoah's Quest, I saw updated Adventurers. There are people that want Classic Castle or Classic Space to return. Getting old Classic Castle or Classic Space in terms of parts and build techniques and probably even colours is highly unlikely. However, given how long they have been away, I reckon many fans would be happy for a new theme to be as similar to the 20+ year old theme they are after as Jungle 2017 is to Outback. So if they did a new castle theme with a new sub-theme name, and used tan and dark tan for the builds instead of the yellow or old the greys and blacks of times gone by, or did a space explorer style theme in which the ships are not blue but grey, then I imagine many would be happy even if it is not an exact reboot. Aside from just buying the old sets, I think that is the most we can hope for when it comes to nostalgia - modern re-imaginings of what we want.

It was not an attack, it was a genuine question. The newer theme might be called forest, but there is very little tree based parts in it and the style of sets (the location based scenery and the types of vehicles) and the associated play is very similar to those of Outback. They could have taken away the little greenery there is and replace it with a few tan plates and some shrubs and it would be even more similar. You could easily play out the same story lines with the two different themes. Which is why I wondered what it was your were looking for to return. Is it just the name that is important, or the now rather vintage style of the builds, or the colour schemes, ... something else?

What is it about those themes that makes you want them to return? When I look at Outback, for example: There is a small car, which in my eyes is a similar set to these: There is a plane and some scenery, and another set with a river and a truck, both of which are similar to parts from this: There is small helicopter set, and another helicopter with a van, similar to this: Then there are other sets like this: These are all from the City Jungle theme from 2017. So to me it seems we have recently had a revival of Outback (and to some extent the rescue type themes) just brought up to date in terms of parts and build styles.

Why are you calling me lazy? History books differ in what is reported, as there are often many different sources.

There is a more active thread on bricks and pieces here, any updates as to when it starts working will probably be posted quicker on that one.

Anyone have any guess on Lego Ideas set production numbers?
MAB replied to LegoDW's topic in General LEGO Discussion
One retail set we do know for sure is the limited edition crawler. LEGO advertised that as 20,000 copies only before it went on sale and so made the market go wild for it, essentially doubling in value on the day of purchase. -
Which is the best CMF Series? Thanks for playing
MAB replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Between Series 3 and 10 for me, but went with 3 as Series 10 is already through and my vote helps knock out Disney and TLM2.- 182 replies

Lego Licensed Parts available from Bricks & Pieces
MAB replied to LegoPercyJ's topic in LEGO Licensed
Yes. I often do this. You get to build a set at a fraction of the price. Although there is always the debate about whether you own the set if you have not bought it as a set and do not have the box and instructions. You have the parts to build it, but do you have the set? For some people that matters. For other people(including me) so long as you get to build it and enjoy it, that is all that matter. -
LEGO Disney Minifigures & D2Cs - Rumors and Discussion
MAB replied to Robert8's topic in LEGO Licensed
I wonder whose word it is based on. It seems strange to do an exclusive minifigure just for that, unless it is exclusive but made of otherwise common parts available in sets.- 961 replies

I read something different about the colours of flags. Black (whether it had the skull and cross bones or not) meant that they were going to attack but if the other ship surrendered then mercy would be shown so long as they did not fight back or try to flee. Whereas if they removed the black flag and flew red instead, it meant that they were then going to show no mercy. They also held national flags to fool other ships into believing they were allies.

I doubt they want castle or pirates to be a big bang theme. Their big bang themes tend to be a bit more original. They know what the popularity of these themes are based on previous incarnations. I have no doubt castle will be back in some form relatively soon, and pirates probably in a couple more years. Look at the distribution of pirates sets: Mid 90s - loads 2001/2 - 4 medium - big sets 2009 - a reasonable range across sizes + 2010 The IF 2015 - a reasonable range across sizes So it will probably be someone between 2021-23 for another pirates in-house theme. And I don't think the licensed PotC gets in the way too much here - the last movie had a single large ship, so quite a different market to the kid aimed sets.

Also a biplane last year. The advantage of creator vs City is that they are brick built planes and look somewhat realistic rather than using more specialised parts for cockpits larger wedge type parts and looking a bit weird. CREATOR vs CITY

Anyone have any guess on Lego Ideas set production numbers?
MAB replied to LegoDW's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I think it varies depending on the subject - Disney ones will have a large run for example. Unlicensed probably significantly lower. I imagine it has also gone up over time. Some of the earlier sets had second production runs and the set was out of stock for a while (eg Research Institute, Exosuit) even though it later came back into stock. Exosuit was probably over produced at it hung around a long time and need to heavily advertised (the decommissioning campaign) and discounted. Some had fixed runs no matter how popular they were - for example, the mars rover sold out quickly (in days) in the US and was not restocked, although was a much slower seller (in months) elsewhere. -
Yes, in reality that middle should align properly and the whole thing should be 120x160 units, so will fit into a 6x8 stud hole.

No, I will use the quote feature. I don't care how they are promoted, and in fact I don't think City needs promoting in more depth than it already is. It does very well as it is and it has remained a core best seller for many years. Advertising can go on newer, more experimental themes. The City sets are simple enough not to need cartoons to tell the child what might happen, since they are based on real life type situations / vehicles / characters, then these do not need fleshing out further. Based on other threads about storylines being imposed via media, for every AFOL wanting more depth given to the characters and more advertising there is probably another two that want to go back t the olden days where LEGO was about creativity and imagination, when we didn't need to be told the names of characters or what the storyline is and children knew how to use their imagination.

In the heist set, there aren't children or any people inside the bank. There aren't any bank workers at all - just cops and robbers. I guess this must take place out of business hours, when there is nobody around to be hurt by a bulldozer smashing into a building. Many police sets are like that and in the associated media, the robbers tend to get caught. I doubt LEGO wants to send out a message that crime can pay in their stories.
