2009 Pirate Set Impressions - the good, the bad and the ugly
Fluyt replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
6243, Ship What I like 2 factions Female minifig Lattice windows Normal cannons What I don't like Shark Ugly skull & crossbones on the sails The stern is too big and it could have used another midsection 6241, Island What I like Another Imperial, with shako Normal cannon Dark blue or black rowing boat Torn pants print What I don't like Hidious baseplate Skull & crossbones design Catapult thing 6242, Imperial base What I like More Imperials Normal cannon Gold epaulettes Overall design What I don't like Hidious, non-poseable 4+ palm tree (the trunk, the leaves seem to be normal), why does everyone think it is a normal palm tree? Stickers for the walls Skull & crossbones design and the dynamite to some extent I've left out the raft and the smallest set, not that much too say there. The whole theme looks ok, but it could have been so much better, like some of the pirate torso's are nice (so they can do it), but some are too "cartoony" or something, just cant word it. And in general there aren't nearly enough weapons and no backpacks. -

Well, English-speaking countries also have different types of English, so technically they aren't speaking the same language either ("English-English", "American-English" etc. Some clear differences would be stuff like: color/colour). The differences might be fairly minor, but the same is true for at least some of the Chinese dialects.

I'm suspecting those are stickers (seeing as they cover multiple parts, and TLG's sticker-madness lately) and the palm tree looks like the hidious 4+ palm tree. Don't think I'll get all of these, in all sets are some nice items I want (telescope (new piece!), torn trouser printed legs, shako's, blue epaulettes, etc.), even though I don't really like the design of the sets, but I'll stick to the smaller ones and maybe the imperial fort structure not to hurt my wallet too much. But then again I might change my mind if we get to see more of them.

This is a pretty nice set. I really like the torso and its "genericness" so it can be used for other factions. And at least this set has 2 shields (althought I prefer the triangular ones) instead of just 1 shield you get from crossbow attack (from the wrong fraction, I'd have liked a crown knights shield 100x better). Some improvements for this set would be a normal bow and a sword instead of 2 of the 3 crossbows, smaller wheels and triangular shields. 4/5 from me (actually 3,5 but I'll round it up)

I think the tan pith is dark tan and grey legs should be dark tan legs in the poll Kind of a hard desision to choose just one, the white and dark tan piths look nice with either white, tan or dark tan legs, the dark bley pith looks nicest with dark tan I think. But white/dark tan pith with white/tan/dark tan legs look best out of all, can't decide on a single one.

I'm working on a cutter (like the one in 6277), but I can't get the stern to look right . But at least I've finished the bow and middle of the ship (hope I don't have to change them when I complete the stern). And I still need to start on a large imperial harbour/port. I allready got 2 48x48 baseplates this week, but my budget is a bit low now, and I still need some light gray plates, octagon pillars, arches and/or sloped panels with rock pattern. +some lattice windows and roofing materials.
-
The white legs look nice on all of them, but I don't really like the black legs on them. I'd go with: white pith/white legs dark tan pith/tan legs dark bley pith/dark tan legs (at least if you don't want to use the same coloured legs more than once)

Some model paint (like revell) might have one that looks close, since there are so many different colours. I think there is also a mix chart somewhere of those types of paint, so you can really get any colour you want by mixing, I'm not sure thought.

Will there ever be a newer better ship than the BSB or SES?
Fluyt replied to Antsa Antero's topic in LEGO Pirates
I don't think they'll be topped. I'll be very happy if they will make ships of RBR quality, I really like that ship, even thought I don't own it (but it isn't close to BSB or SES). I liked the recent viking ship (mostly because of the hull design) so I think they can manage a RBR-like ship if they try a little harder, but I hated the sail-type and the absolutely horrendous mast-pieces of the viking ship. I really hope they go back to the old mast-type. -
Is it OK to mix dark skinned mini-figures with yellow mini-figures?
Fluyt replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I think it is ok to mix them, it ads more diversity and realism to the crew. Unfortunately I don't have any brown/reddish brown/dark flesh heads (don't have hands or torsos in those colours either). They're kinda hard to come by in the Netherlands (only about 1 or 2 BL stores with nba heads or minifigs if I looked correctly, and I can't find torsos and hands for them). -
Which pieces would you like to see in future pirate sets?
Fluyt replied to Shadows's topic in LEGO Pirates
I would really like to see a minifigscale globe and more map designs. Also different sail shapes, scale and compass (the kind you draw circles with) would be nice. -
The different prices on LEGO in the US vs. Europe
Fluyt replied to CopMike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It's more like 11,20 USD (otherwise Europe would pay around 3 times as much for lego compared to the US, 2 times the price is too high allready) In east-European countries lego is also a lot more expensive than is is in the US, while the wages are even lower. The wages in the US are very good compared to most countries in the world, at least when consider how much products you can get for your income (like 15% less wage, but most things are 25%-50% cheaper for example). So the "wage-argument" is a load of megablocks (just like the arguments about competition/open market), especially since even countries with lower wages have to pay a lot more. -
I never knew this set existed. But from the review and pictures it looks like a very nice set, 4/5 from me. I really like the design of the plane.

Check out this huge lot of minifigs for sale
Fluyt replied to Gen. Knowledge's topic in LEGO Pirates
Well, you do save shipping costs and time from not having to buy them from a lot of different sellers, there are some extra accesories, + 2 armada figs and some expensive governor/admiral broadside/woodhouse minifigs. But on the other hand, most of the figs have the cheaper tricorne and not the shako and there are lots of yellow (or even no) epaulettes, mostly instead of blue ones. -
Got 2 BL orders in today, not really cheap unfortunately, but I finally got my islander female (so I now have all the lego pirate torso's) and I got 5 complete lattice windows (10 panes (white)). And hopefully I'll be getting 2 48 x 48 light gray baseplates, so I can start my harbour (which still is a long way to go, since I work kinda slow and still have to buy at least some more windows and a couple of entire roofs).

That ship seems a bit odd, a longer version of the bsb with ses sails. It's a bit too low for its length and amount of sails imho. about the bsb: I think I've heard it had something to do with the including/excluding the spare parts in the piece count.
-
I think it will come back at the end of 2009 (or early 2010). There are just so many signs of its return allready, so it probably is in relatively advanced stages of development.
-
As a kid, this was probably one of my favourite sets (I remember really wanting the shako wearing imperial guard), even though I've never had it . It has a nice amount of figures, a very usefull baseplate and a good amount of playability. But I don't really like the red/black/light gray combo (I do like the structure).

The different prices on LEGO in the US vs. Europe
Fluyt replied to CopMike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Europe protects its own market, just like any other country or continent would. There is a lot of competition in Europe as well (we also have megablocks, knex and stuff like that), but most Europeans seem to prefer LEGO, that's why they can raise their prices. But no matter what argument LEGO has (competition, taxes, exchange rates etc.), the sometimes even double (!) prices Europe has to pay when compared to the US, is nowhere near justified. I just cannot believe the difference is caused by the arguments LEGO brings forward, especially when the difference fluctuates very much (sometimes 50% more and sometimes even more than a 100% more). That's just pushing it way to far.
