Got this set in unbuilt MISb condition and I am looking forward to build it :-) One thing is very special about this set - the battery car, which is unique to 7722. While the 1980 set 7720 still contains the old style battery car (red wheels and blue/red magnets), 7722 got a facelifted version with black magnets and blacks wheels, thus representing the design line of the grey 12v era.

Well, I am not (!) talking about properly scales in relation to minifigs. I am talking about a consistent line-up within a certain theme, mostly city. As an example, today we have cars in 4w, 6w and 8w. You are right when you say that in reality, not all cars are the same size. Therefore, in some cases the differences between 4w and 6w for cars do make sense. But even a Ford F150 (a very big SUV) is not twice as wide as a Smart Fortwo (a very small car). So, this range from 4w to 8w is not consistent, combining these sets will not lead to an aesthetical setting: either one is too big or the other one is too small. But as long as today's kids/fans/afols don't bother, TLC will continue to sell zillions of these sets, so their strategy is the right one.
-
Imho, many of the city sets are not consistent within the city theme as a whole. But everyone can do as he/she prefers to. Most of the modern sets (released in year 2000 or newer) simply don't appeal to me, so I cleaned my collection from this modern stuff and sold nearly all those sets. Right now, my collection containts about 3% sets that were released after 2000. And there is still so much to explore/collect before that limit...

There are always some extreme exceptions in real life, but I don't think that 60085 and the current city trains refer to these pictures.
-
Of course, but today the scale of the city sets seems to be determined by random. Regarding set 60085 - have you ever seen a normal SUV that is wider than a train?
-
I'm going fine with 4w.
-
Same here. 80's sets have a clear and consistent structure - trains were always 6w, cars were always 4w, trucks were always 5w (considering their bigger wheels). Planes were also 4w + wings. Today's city sets look nice as long as they stand alone. But putting them together shows great inconsistency: While trains are still 6w, some cars are 4w, other cars are 6w, some are even 8w (e.g. set 60085). Trucks are 6w. Maybe today's kids don't care about this mismatch, but I cared about that when I was young. I even didn't like 6440 because it was a 6w truck that did not fit to all other trucks I had.

It is a kind of gambling. Even when buying sets at Bricklink, they may be incomplete even if they are sold as "complete". This may happen if the Bricklink inventory is updated/changed after the seller listed the set for sale. So, it is not the seller's fault. Buying at Ebay is even more gambling. I bought sets "used, complete" where important parts were missing, parts were biten, parts were broken. I don't know how the seller came to the conclusion that their set has been "complete". On the other hand, I bought sets "used, complete" that came like new and in perfect condition... parts shiny and fresh, instructions like never-been-used, and the extra parts were included, too. It is just impossible to predict what kind of quality you get.

1980/81 train set boxes - paper or styrofoam?
Carrera124 replied to Carrera124's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I don't think so, because a) I saw 7710 only in paperbox, both EU and US versions b) I saw 7720/7730/7740 only in styrofoam, both EU and US versions Yes, that's true. I guess the reason is that nearly all accessory sets have been sold for one decade 1980-1990, therefore TLC might have decided that this change would give them a benefit. -
Hello, first of all, until now I thought that the change from styrofoam boxes to paper boxes was during 1982. This assumption is based on the technic sets from 1981 and 1982: all 1981 sets (8844, 8845, 8848, 8859) are known with styrofoam boxes, I've never seen this sets with paper boxes. 8090 from 1982 also comes in styrofoam box, while all other 1982 technic sets come in paper boxes (I never saw one of them with styrofoam box). Now, I got into classic train sets, and I am a little bit puzzled. While styrofoam boxes of 7720, 7730 and 7740 are common, I've never seen a styrofoam box of set 7710. The same applies to 7725 from 1981 - I often see paper boxes, but never have seen a 7725 with styrofoam box. Is there anyone who can confirm this? Moreover, the styrofoam boxes of 7720 and 7730 seem to have the same size. If yes, is it possible that the inner trays from 7720 also fit into a 7730 box? kind regards, Christian

42056 - Porsche Speculation
Carrera124 replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I never wanted to buy a studless technic set again, but I think I'll make an exception for that set. -
Well, I am looking for a better box since I got the MISB one, but there is nothing out there. Bricklink offers are somewhat funny - junky boxes for high prices...

8299 Search Sub Software
Carrera124 replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The software can be downloaded from here: http://www.brickfactory.info/ (old set software -> by number) -
Does anybody know the story behind this "limited" release? Has it been a special item for certain toy stores, or where has it been sold?

Very well done (4w rules )

To be honest, I prefer the old ones. The updated ones look like they've been put on anabolic steroids or something like that (also applies to the standard city sets/cars from today... most of them appeal "blown up" to me).

Well, the quality of currently produced TLG bricks has declined a lot, so I don't think this is a reasonable argument.

Bad news.

Technic Sets/MOCs without Tires
Carrera124 replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Vehicles have a great advantage - they offer high playability, because they are intended to move them around. In contrast to City/Space/etc, Technic sets came and come without figs, which means that static technic models are not that "playable". Maybe that was the reason why Lego equipped many sets with technicfigs during the 90ies, but for some reason they don't do this anymore. Non-vehicle technic models might need really cool features in order not to become boring right after building them. A crane might be a good idea, a windmill might not. Something which is rarely seen, are minifig-scaled buildings that are combined with technic elements and features (motors, pneumatics, flex system,...). -
Technic Sets/MOCs without Tires
Carrera124 replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
8858 from 1980 also doesn't have wheels :-) -
Do you know - when the Modulex people are planning to start mass production? - if they intend to sell only bulk bricks oder even some kind of sets? - if they are planning to sell online only, or maybe Modulex will be available in (whatever) stores?
-
Does it have rolling wheels?
-
I'm convinced, I think I'll build it around Christmas 2014. Until then, maybe I'll find a box top that comes in better condition.
