  1. Good point. Although the vacu form styrene sheet may be something that they are more flexible on. I would assume that the vacu form part production is more akin to the pad printing, and less resource intensive than doing a full production run on an ABS part in a new color. I know the "only already existing parts" rules were in effect for at least Cafe Corner and Green Grocer. I'm not sure if they have been loosened or modified since, as the line has evolved into greater sales and success.
  2. Now imagine if you had written Kenner back then with the helpful suggestion of "Princess Leia needs much much bigger boobs dudes!" Would they have rushed to respond to this helpful constructive suggestion? Or immediately categorized you as some sort of deviant weirdo plastic pervert, and forwarded all further correspondence to their legal and security departments? For the record the outfit that made the PotC On Stranger Tides action figures did get a lot of parent blowback concerning just how "educational" the Angelica figure was.
  3. Because PotC and HP only make money, and exceed expectations in the years that there were corresponding movies out. Star Wars too sees a drastic difference between when a movie was out and when wasn't. At least until Clone Wars started airing. ( here's a hint guys why we so so many TCW sets. They make more money than OT currently.) We see the same thing with the Middle Earth lines. LotR may have appeared strong or weak, depending on where you live. (It seems much stronger in English language countries. Somewhat understandable given the source. Did HP have similar issues?) whereas The Hobbit, with it's corresponding movie did much much better. At least just by observing holiday shelves and available stock. ( although one word of advise for TLG regarding both. When seeking to sell on the mass merchant toy aisles, you may want to steal clear of the big hairy giant spider sets. I have a few young drooling Lego fanatics that will not come into my office until I have proven that Shelob is secured in a box. My wife too.)
  4. The Dark Avengers Norman Osborn Iron Patriot was one of the cooler modern stories, and part of it was to look just a hair cheesy. I can't quite fathom why they are using the look in IM3? And suspect that it will lack the impact.
  5. Short answer, because Polybags are technically considered "promotional materials" and therefore can get around some of the licensing issues. But even then the Polybags have some restrictions. There are mainly 2 types of Polybags, the pure figure Polybags, which are 100% promotional giveaways (ie minihfig hulk, lex Luther in armor, Shazam, Elrond, etc) or those that are minor builds but are pure store exclusives ( Gandalf at Dul Gulder, Mirkwood Elf, Frodo Cooking, etc). Notice that Lego stores do not carry those.
  6. Looking at what little has been creeping out in terms of pics from the next wave, I think I am in the minority but the Corsair ship is looking like my favorite. I like how different the ship looks, while it still looks like a good solid ship. (as opposed to the half ship that is the Ninjago Destiny's Bounty). I can live with another Gimli fig. While not my first choice, it at least forms the complete scene of the three mains taking the ship. I love the three ghosts. And A Peter Jackson minifig. Too cool. But I'm weird. I like when Lego goes outside the box and does a set that's a little unexpected and different. It makes it so LotR is not simply "Castle with fleshies".
  7. Sadly probably not. I seem to remember reading somewhere that one of the primary restrictions on the designers for the Modulars is that they must principally use existing in inventory parts (no new shapes or colors, nothing that is out of production) I think the only exceptions have so far been the clock face and custom shield printing for the town hall. Now we can see stuff that has been created for other sets and themes. So something like the Friends Ice Cream Cone piece could show up.
  8. Heck even in Star Wars, wasn't Jabba's Palace an actual monastery that had been taken over by Jabba's Criminal empire and thugs?
  9. Oh look, this story just showed up on Greta Van Sustern. Once again propagating the idiotic claims, without showing a picture of the actual movie. Yeah. That's gonna end well. (And apparently it is the "Austrian, Turkish Community" that is raising the fuss. /sigh
  10. There actually is room to split the difference there. Assuming DB's conversation in honestly and accurately relayed to us, which we really have no reason to question. One key question to ask is how Lego treats LotR abd The Hobbit. Do they view them as the same line, or as two different properties, in terms of judging results? Just from eyeballing things, the initial Lord of the Rings waves were probably quite disappointing in North America. Especially the higher end sets. A lot of sets blown out cheaply at discount before the holidays. A good amount still on shelves. Now the Hobbit seems to have sold substantially better. At least some sets such as Unexpected Gathering.
  11. Wonderful job on what was always one of my favorite ships from the game. And just to make you feel better, the original in game presentation of the ship was a standard Imperial grey color, with no red markings whatsoever.
  12. Thank you. The determinate for LotR probably is not going to be Germany. While Germany is one if the more important core backbones of Lego sales, they tend to be more traditionalists. Germany more than any other area is what drives the popularity of the City line. The Licensed lines such as LotR's and Superheroes represent more of a stronger push into the North American market. Just as Friends is a push into a new customer base. LotR's success or failure will be determined mainly on North American retail shelves. And mainly with an older target audience then their traditional 6 to 12. Lego pretty well owns the German toy market. The licensed lines more represent their dominance fight against Hasbro and Mattel in North America.
  13. We know they won't be clear. The only minifig part that Lego is able or willing to do in clear or transparent is the head. Clear plastics have very different properties from ABS and what they normally use for Minifigs. They are very brittle. They crack and fog, and joints made of them bind up. Lego has stated that attempts to engineer trans clear Minifigs have not produced acceptable quality figures. I would be hoping more for a good use of the new gitd plastic.
  14. Or even better the Bunny Suit guy.
  15. This is one of those rather delicate subjects. While breasts themselves are not a taboo subject as such, asking or proposing to put more realistic breasts on Minifigs tends to mark one as just slightly weirder than furries.
  16. The scary thing is this sort if thing is where Transformers began... And they did it better in the 70's. does anybody remember the toy line in the US called Micronauts? That was the Takara MicroMan line that eventually evolved into what Hasbro rebranded Transformers.
  17. I think 10224 was her first major set and her labor of love. It was also her first of these videos. This was more of a team effort set that she may not have had quite the level of fire over. It happens.
  18. That's great. It always amazes me how you can visualize and create brick built people like that.
  19. Replace the light bley 1x6 tiles on the outer edge with 1x2's. it allows for a little more independent flex, so the longer tiles aren't levering up the vacu form baseplate as much. At least it seems to have worked for my GE and the corner MOC I just built.
  20. I have noticed with Astrid's buildings a lot of the play features stem from the more complex stories she builds into the minifigures and the scene. Jamie tends to add play via the setting. Astrid does so via the characters and not so much an item or minibuilds of furnishings. (Thereby unconsciously validating much of the gazillions of research into male and female psychs they spent in developing the Freinds line.) In the Town Hall it was the complex little wedding scene. In the Theater it revolves around the Shirley Temple'esque child star, her Chauffeur and supporting cast. As far as other play features? Well its a movie theater. That right there is the limiter. You buy your tickets, get your popcorn and sit down to watch the movie. She added a little to it with the "Hollywood Premier" going on outside with the lights and press photographer.
  21. My operating theory is that Chima is in fact Fabuland. It's what happens after all of the carnivores eat all of the fluffy bunny people. The forests become overgrown, and the remaining carnivores war with each other for the narcotics.
  22. Wow! just some beautiful stuff in there. How did you achieve those metalic blue hex shapes on the doors?
  23. They may not. Did any of the Batman minifigs shift to look more like Christian Bale? I always thought they all pretty much stuck with the more classic Bruce Wayne look?
  24. Just got this one on a whim, and was very pleasantly surprised. The figs are great. And Nick Fury's car is a fantastic little build. A ton of play value for a 6 wide. Looks great. Just everything you could want for the price. As a Spiderman purist the "Spider Cycle" deeply offends me. But it looks good enough sitting under a different hero.
  25. I like that it matches the existing Batcycles/Batpods from the current sets. It looks much better in that regard than the Captain America/Catwoman cycle mold that I was expecting.
