Heroica RPG - Quest #104: Ace Assassin: Dual Dragoons
Flipz replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: I have the photos ready, but unfortunately I am too tired to manage to post this battle without making tons of incoherent mistakes and typos. You have until I wake up in the morning to make any last preparations for the next battle. -
Heroica RPG- Quest #103: Alfendi Lupine Strikes Again!
Flipz replied to Kintobor's topic in The Heroica Archive
OOC: Just as a reminder to my fellow Questies, check your PMs for our strategy/eventual loot discussion convo. Also, Guts should have dealt 60*2=120+31=151+4=155*2(Darkness)=310*2(encouraged)=620-3=617 damage, so Chrysalis should be down to 23 HP scratch that, Hoke's damage to her was incorrect as well; he was using Darkness, so he should have done 10*2=20+32=52*2(darkness)=104-3=101 damage, so Chrysalis is dead and Guts should have 65 more Gold and Chrysalis' drops. Guts advances menacingly upon Fish-Faced McCoy twice from the Front Row, drinking a potion before his second attack should he be damaged. If his target goes down, Guts turns his attention to Daniel Collins. Battle Order: Hoke Alex Lind Guts Guts- 500 replies

Heroica RPG - Quest #104: Ace Assassin: Dual Dragoons
Flipz replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: Yes, Venom lasts for a full battle. I apologize for not having the next portion of the Quest ready. As soon as I have everything I need, I'll get things moving forward. -
I'm just waiting on sets, myself. A lot of people seem to be out of town or prepping to leave town, too.

We have a Hero artifact that ignores the enemy's positive effects. Why not let certain enemies do the same? My problem with Lucky enemies is, like yours, that they punish all the Heroes for one or two Heroes being more or less consistently Lucky, but an enemy that simply says "lolnope" to a Lucky Hero without being Lucky against the others is much less so (as long as there's enough other enemies that the Hero could attack and still have Lucky count--I'm a big proponent of creating battles where there's "something for everyone", even though I'm not always perfect at implementing it). One thing I've noticed, in both myself and other QMs, is that we have a tendency to get attached to our enemies' Specials, even moreso than Heroes get attached to their SHIELD-skills. I sometimes wonder if we might get too attached sometimes--I've already criticized Endgame for making so many enemies immune to Sealed, and I myself have had to resist the urge to make certain enemies immune to Sealed just so the chance for the Special to trigger is always there. The thing is, even with Lucky, you're not guaranteed to roll a SHIELD every battle--heck, I've found myself to be less likely to get good rolls while I'm Lucky. The same thing is true for Jinxing Heroes or having Lucky enemies; no matter how much care and love we pour into our enemies' Special-skills (and believe me, we do put a lot into them), a lot of times it's just not going to happen.

Diana nods, her gaze cold as ice. "Done." Diana applies a Venom and a Deadly Venom to her Precision Bow, then drinks a Mead, a Smelling Salts, and a Nostrum. "Let's hope that's enough, then." Mallelio takes a moment to heal himself, Diana, and Denerii at the cost of 3 Ether. QM Note: I just realized I never told you, but the two Rito Feathers in Denerii's inventory are consumables that grant the Blessed- and Hastened-effects to the user. Whatever, I'm still calling it "bar crawl: the Quest".

Heroica RPG - Quest #104: Ace Assassin: Dual Dragoons
Flipz replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: The hood absorbs the damage (converting it into HP), rather than just being immune to it; thus, there are no gems to remove to it. Sorry, should have made that clearer. -
Ahh, I'm really looking forward to posting some of these PM chains at the end of Quest 104.
-
You're in luck! I think I can say with some confidence that trips to the Fields should be much shorter on average now.

QM Note: Once again, CHECK ME! I think I managed to increase all the correct stats, but do tell me if I'm wrong. We'll move forward when everyone's ready or when the next set is completed, whichever is later. >Denerii flies (back): No Flying (Denerii: flying multipliers reset to 1x) >Siercon (Light, Lullaby Wand) vs. Dark Druid (branch and vine) (back): SHIELD (Dark Druid (staff): 8+9=17*2*2=68 damage (KO!); Siercon: -1 Ether) >Kiray does nothing (back): (nothing happens) >Diana does nothing (back): (nothing happens) >Diana does nothing (back): (nothing happens) >Germ retrieves throwing weapons (front): (Germ: Throwing weapons retrieved) >Actaeon does nothing (back): (nothing happens) >Warlen (Wind, Gold-coated Bat Staff) vs. Dark Druid (branch and vine) (back): >Mallelio heals Siercon (back): Heal Less (Siercon: 18 HP healed; Mallelio: -1 Ether) Denerii again fails to fly, but Siercon finishes off the fight with a powerful burst of Light magic. Inventory: Stone Longsword (WP:8), Smoke Bomb, Phoenix Essence, 2x Rito Feather As the light of Siercon's spell fades, they slowly realize that Germ is no longer with them. Furthermore, in the chaos of their battle, they had lost track of their path entirely. It seems the Lost Forest was living up to its name. Party Leader, please divide the spoils of battle. Staff of the Dark Druid (WP:5, Wood-elemental; staff) (suitable for mages, clerics, Artisans, Necromancers, and Regulators) Hood of the Dark Druid (wearer absorbs Wood- and Darkness-elemental damage; headwear, suitable for druids only) 2x Stun Bomb (Deals 5 damage and the Stunned-effect to all opponents when used.) 2x Venom (Use on a weapon to make it cause the poisoned by 1-effect on any enemy it hits for the duration of one battle, making the poisoned enemy lose 1 health each turn. Several venoms can be used to increase the effect.) 2x Deadly Venom (Use on a weapon to make it cause the poisoned by 10-effect on any enemy it hits for the duration of one battle, making the poisoned enemy lose 10 health each turn. Several venoms can be used to increase the effect.) 2x Remedy (Removes all negative effects from the target.) 2x Trial Brew (Halves the drinkers max HP, max ether, and max SP for the duration of one battle. These effects are irremediable. Surviving a battle without getting knocked out in this state nets you double EXP. Being revived after being knocked-out removes these effects.) Sleep Bomb (Deals 5 damage and the Asleep-effect to all opponents when used.) 40 gold Denerii flaps her wings loudly, finally catching the party's attention. "Heroes! When I flew, I saw for a moment the smallest glimpse of smoke and flame. I can lead you to its source, if you wish." "If I might be so bold to suggest, perhaps we ought to prepare before we move ahead? It could be the Dragons." "I'm down for that. Even if it's not them--which I doubt--with the demon gone who knows what's going to come after us?" "I have to admit, I was surprised to learn that Heroica had accepted the service of a demon amongst its ranks. I trust the Dragonlord's judgement, however." Diana shrugs. "No offense, but I don't. Some of the Veterans get it, some don't. He's one of the latter. Don't expect me to go chasing after the stupid demon he sent with us." "His intentions were appalling, but his actions swayed true--and we would be no better if we chose to abandon those of our own flock! We should not treat him like an enpeesy, for we are more noble than that! We must locate our money-grubbing friend before some terrible fate befalls him!" "...I'ma just come out and say it: lady, you're wack." Diana leans over and whispers to Kiray and Actaeon. "Between all the time we wasted at the Rito Settlement instead of saving Domus and her blatant insanity, I'm beginning to think bringing her along was a serious mistake." Thunder crashes above. It seems a storm will be upon the Lost Woods soon. "See, the Voice in the Sky agrees with me." QM Note: Not necessarily. What does the party do? -
You forget that both Pie and I are QMs--a battle (or maybe two if the party had some insane build) could be run in a week, though with the revamp I doubt that sort of speed would be quite as likely as it was before.

RE: Zepher's comment in 102: The whole RPG seems to have bogged down recently--a lot of us seem to be busy and/or out of town. Hopefully that'll clear up in a week or two. On another note, we seem to have a lot of Quests going--hopefully we'll have enough players in the Hall in a couple months when it comes time for the Halloween Special.

Heroica RPG - Quest #104: Ace Assassin: Dual Dragoons
Flipz replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: Again, I'd normally auto-roll this, but we can't move forward until Monday or Tuesday anyway, so just the one Round. >Denerii flies (back): No Flying (Denerii: flying multipliers reset to 1x) >Siercon (Light, Lullaby Wand) vs. Dark Druid (staff) (back): Great Spell (Dark Druid (staff): 8*2=16+9=25*2*2=100 damage (KO! Undead minions also KO'd); Siercon: -1 Ether) >Kiray does nothing (back): (nothing happens) >Diana retrieves throwing weapons (front): (Diana: Throwing weapons retrieved) >Diana does nothing (back): (nothing happens) >Germ (Wrench) vs. Dark Druid (branch and vine): Hit (Dark Druid (branch and vine): no damage, -1 Level; Germ: wrench must be retrieved) >Actaeon does nothing: (nothing happens) >Warlen (Wind, Gold-coated Bat Staff) vs. Dark Druid (staff) (branch and vine) (back): Great Spell (Dark Druid (branch and vine): 3*2=6+3=9 Wind-elemental damage; Warlen: -1 Ether) >Mallelio heals Dark Druid (staff) (branch and vine) (back): Heal (Dark Druid (branch and vine): 1+18=19 damage; Mallelio: -1 Ether) Denerii fails to fly, but the rest of the party manages to rally; Siercon blasts the staff-wielding druid to cinders, causing his two minions to crumble as well; Germ, meanwhile, thwacks the other druid with his wrench, jarring it slightly. Warlen conjures up a mighty cyclone, using it to fling Quarion into the last druid's face for some damage, while Mallelio easily switches targets to heal some more unlife out of the branch-wielder. One final enemy remains. The battle continues! The Enemies: Dark Druid (branch and vine) *Immune to Wood, Sleep, and Sudden Death* Type: Dark/Undead/Humanoid Level: 7 HP: 32/108 Ether: 2/2 Special I: Roots of Unlife - Restores 8 health to all allies and removes any negative effects from them; also converts one random non-undead enemy into an undead minion at the cost of 1 Ether. Usable only if the Dark Druid has Ether remaining. Special II: Dark Meditation - The Dark Druid steals 1 Ether from the target; if the target has no Ether, the Dark Druid steals 5 health to gain 1 Ether. Used if out of Ether. Also mention if you want to try to flee, heal or cast a magic spell, or if you want to use an item instead of attacking. Any enemy not targeted will get a Free Hit on the party after everyone has acted. QM Note: As a reminder, undead enemies can only be damaged by elemental attacks or healing (any element works, so long as they are not otherwise immune to it). Effects from weapons (i.e. poison, level reduction, etc.) will still be transferred even if the attack does not deal any damage. -

Perhaps they should be called "Passive Traits" or "Passive Skills" rather than Passive Specials, then. (Or we can do as Sandy already does and just list them as "NOTE:" at the end of the stat block. )

Heroica RPG - Quest #104: Ace Assassin: Dual Dragoons
Flipz replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: Correct. Diana glances nervously at Kiray. "...maybe the two of us should stop attacking? I don't think there's much either of us can do to improve the situation." Diana sounds extremely frustrated by her own impotence. -
Yes, it was. You had a good strategy going against Loc, and with better rolls you could easily have turtled away against Orokai, the dice just turned on you. Also note that your competitors deliberately sent the most difficult of the Fantastic Four against you. Oh, I don't mind players diverging from the planned path at all (I never intended the party of 104 to directly fight Tarban, but Kiray forced the issue with him and provoked a fight, and there have been more instances since where the party has improvised things beyond my initial plans), so long as it's kept reasonable as opposed to "I see you've put a lot of work into all this stuff, now I'm going to steal a ship and sail to a totally different continent". While I disagree with how it was brought about, I think that the design and structure of Quest 100 lends itself to a split party, since all the locations seem to have been prepared (or at least somewhat planned) in advance just in case the party wanted to visit them. (That's actually been a huge advantage for me, since I realized that the Lost Woods I was sending my party to was actually the same Lost Woods Sandy had prepared for 100. ) I'm more talking about deliberately antagonizing fellow players, whether that's constantly berating and lecturing them for EVERY single thing they say or outright sabotaging the Quest for them (both things I've done in 53). I might not have intended it that way, but I definitely antagonized CM and you and Pandora on 53 (and Scorpiox on both 38 AND 53), and then acted like a stuck-up moralizing know-it-all in the discussion topic and QM Lounge instead of asking you guys if I was going too far (and instead of listening when you told me I was). I'm still sorry I behaved that way, and I constantly find myself wishing I could go back and be more polite and patient and compassionate. There's a general principle of RPGs that basically says "make sure your conflicts are with the character, not the player". When the hostility spills out into these discussion topics, it seems symptomatic of a lack of a lack of separation between player and character. I do love characters that are cantankerous and ill-mannered--not as much as some folks seem to (I can only handle small doses), but well enough. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone likes when players are cantankerous, hostile, and ill-mannered. No one likes to be hated, or to feel like someone is out to deliberately ruin their fun. My advice: even if deliberately ruining other people's fun is not your intention, if that's the impression people are getting of you, perhaps you ought to reconsider how you're treating them--try to see how your actions would feel from their perspective, and then make an effort to avoid making people feel that way in the future. I actually think the perfect example of a character who's disagreeable without their player being disagreeable is Eric (Khorne). If you go back and look at Quest 58, you'll constantly see him checking in with Chrome and Scuba--whenever he knew his actions might be disruptive, he watched and asked his fellow players to make sure he wasn't taking away from their fun. That's being a good player, and it's one of the many reasons people are so happy to get a chance to play with Khorne--because they can trust that he's looking out for everyone's fun, not just his own.

Heroica RPG- Quest #103: Alfendi Lupine Strikes Again!

OOC: Just ran some numbers, and it's definitely a good idea to redirect Guts' attacks to Chrysalis. Also, I could have sworn Guts had put on the Overkill Gloves...? Guts attacks Chrysalis twice from the Front Row; if he takes damage the first time, he will use a Grand Potion (Instant Items) and one Potion (instant items, second turn) before he attacks again. Battle Order (if Alex changes his target to Chrysalis) Lind Hoke Thormanil Alex Guts Guts Free Hits: Daniel vs Lind (1 damage) Tenma vs Hoke (0 damage) If Alex does not change his target to Chrysalis: Battle Order Hoke Thormanil Lind Alex Guts Guts Free Hits: Tenma vs Hoke (0 damage)- 500 replies

QM Note: Fixed. You can only use your own items on other characters, though of course if Germ wants to give you one of his Potions after the battle as compensation he is of course free to do so. QM Note: Multipliers stack; you rolled a normal spell (which deals 20 damage from the front row), which was then multiplied *2 because Undead is weak to Light and *2 again because Dark is weak to Light. In the example you gave, a Fire spell or Fire-elemental weapon versus a Beast/Plant/Icy enemy would deal 2*2*2= 8x damage. Note also that resistance and weakness can cancel each other out; for example, Dark enemies are completely immune to Darkness-elemental damage, but a Dark/Humanoid enemy takes 1x damage from Darkness, because the resistance from Dark is countered by the weakness from Humanoid. Normally I'd go ahead and roll the Round, but since we won't be able to move forward until Monday anyway, I'll be sticking to 24-hour Rounds for now. -
Well...yes, exactly. I still feel bad when I think back to my behavior on 53. Looking back today, I should have been kicked out (or at least given a stern talking-to) long before anything that happened in the final battle; I owe my completion of that Quest solely to Zepher's (and the other players') undeserved mercy. But as much as I get the urge to delete all my posts every time I read the Quest, I'm glad my bad behavior is preserved there, so today I and other can point to it and say "don't do that" (like you just did, Pie). With one, maybe two exceptions, I can't really think of any examples of players on later Quests following in the footsteps of my mistakes back then--namely, putting my own interests and fun above the other players' enjoyment. There's been plenty of conflict within parties since then, but it's almost always been handled in such a way that the players on both sides of the in-character conflict have made sure to check in with each other to make sure they don't cross the line. IMO, that's ultimately what you have to do in collaborative experiences like RPGs; sometimes you have to keep your character from saying or doing what they realistically would say or do, for the sake of not ruining the other players' experience, because it's not about any one player having fun, it's about all of the players and the QM having fun together. If you're not willing to give and take, then RPGs are probably not for you--in that case, you'll probably be happier with single-player video games, or something like the Fields that's pretty much solely mechanical. ...maybe I/we should take this discussion to the QM's Lounge? Dunno.

I think the lesson we've all learned is that Heroes don't do well all alone, and that it's better to cooperate with one's party rather than to antagonize them.

OOC: Now is probably the best time to try to deal with Chrysalis, since she doesn't have any fancy immunities and she's Sealed from using her scary Special skill. Leave Lind to take 1 damage from Daniel or fishface, you can eat Tenma's hit from the Back Row, and you all can focus down Chrysalis like she's tissue paper.- 500 replies
