42056 - Porsche Speculation
Squelch replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's a great idea - I'm moving the third week of June. I was going to wait to put this together until after the move, but I think I like your son's plan. Put it together, take it apart, and mail it to my new place so it gets there the same time I do. Like getting it twice! -

So not in stores in the US. Ok, thanks! -

Will this be available in actual Lego stores on June 1st? This may have been answered but I can't find it. The only thing I can see is that it is available on Shop@Home on June 1st, and in stores on July 1st. I am moving in early June and am not sure it would arrive through the mail before I move if I order it through S@H. -

I don't post on here much at all, but I have an off-topic statement. I'm amazed at the fact that in about a day and a half of effort, it seems like you guys have crowd-reverse-engineered what probably took a certified Lego designer a few weeks or months to come up with. I'm amazed at how quickly you all have come up with credible plans, just by analyzing a few not-so-great photos. Bravo! -

I just ordered (i'm very busy and can't surf the internet all the time) and my order number is Y3079319XX which is interesting because it's actually a lower number than some of you who ordered it way before me. I wonder why that is...

8420 Street Bike
Squelch replied to therealjustin's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
On a real motorcycle the tire treads actually go in opposite directions. It's because the rear wheel drives the bike forward, so the tread is set up to apply force against the ground toward the rear of the bike. The front tire provides most of the stopping power, so the tread is set up to apply force against the ground toward the front of the bike. (This is a VERY simple explanation, and I'm sure someone who has a physics or engineering background is cursing me right now). So LEGO has actually made it realistic instead of "looking right". -
Does anybody else like Motorcycles around here?
Squelch replied to Captain Green Hair's topic in Community
I went out for a short ride yesterday, and it was glorious! I have three bikes - a Buell XB12X Ulysses that's my daily driver, a Kawasaki KLX250S for trails, and a Triumph Daytona 675 for the track. I love motorcycles, and if I had to give up every other hobby (Lego, photography, etc.) I would in a heartbeat, to keep at least one motorcycle. -
Thanks for the feedback! I think I'll get the flatbed if it's in the store. If not, I'll go with the backhoe. Or I might just buy whatever the heck pops up and looks good... When I have cash, I tend to make random purchases!
-
Ok, I'm heading to the Lego store Saturday to buy the 8110 Unimog. I'll have some extra cash with me, so should I go with the 8069 Backhoe Loader or the 8081 Extreme Cruiser? I could also swing the 8109 Flatbed Truck if I use some VIP Points. What do you all think?
-
I'd like to join the Academy. How much time does it take? I have this stupid "job" thing going on that allows me to buy Lego, but it also takes up so much time...
-
8043 is on its way! It should arrive tomorrow. :thumb up: And TechnicFreak - I won't wait too long for the Unimog. Maybe a month or two...
-
Right now - Hew Strachan's The First World War, and parts of numerous other World War I books. I teach military history, and we're in the Great War era...
-
The online comic strip Penny Arcade has a comic today about Minecraft Lego: The text isn't up yet, but it will be interesting to see their take on it, (outside of the comic strip).
-
Thanks for all the replies! Looks like 8043 is a better bet. Is it safe to assume the Unimog will be around for another year or so?
-
Ok, how about 8043 (motorized excavator) or 8110 (Unimog)? I went to the Lego store to buy 8110, and the guy there said that 8043 was a better set. Since I wanted to do some research I decided to buy a modular building instead... So now when I go back, which is better than the other?

MOC: Townhouse Trio - Butcher, Barber, and Laundromat
Squelch replied to sonicstarlight's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks for the reply! How many sets went together to make these buildings? What do you think is a good number of sets to have before you can start building MOCs? What percent of the buildings are straight from sets you own, and what percent did you buy off Bricklink specifically for the MOC? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to get started building modular MOCs, and I have no idea how to start. I didn't see anything in the forums about "How do you get into building MOCs?" It's a chicken/egg thing - do I design it on LDD first and then get the bricks, or do I get a bunch of large sets, and then start building with the bricks I have from those sets? I've got the FB, GE and PS, and will buy the TH when it comes out, but I don't want to tear those up to make a MOC. Instead I want to make something to fit in with them. -

These are great! Next time I'm in the city I'll look for them. Do you plan your designs on LDD or do you just start with a baseplate, a bunch of bricks, and go? I want to get into building modular MOCs, but I don't know if I should start digitally and plan, or just start building from the ground up, so to speak. I need to start buying more big sets too, to amass some bricks! -
I bought the latest Assassin's Creed around the same time as Skyrim, (got a half-off deal for it) and I haven't even opened it yet. I expect Skyrim to last me at least another month or two, and then I might get to AC. I've gotten to the point where I can take out just about everything with only a few arrow strikes or fireballs, so right now I'm just walking around, working on side quests, enjoying the landscape and the immersion in the world. It's pretty incredible.

Strangely enough, I still haven't bought the two sets that brought me out of my dark ages! I saw a story on Wired about the Unimog, and thought "Man, I have GOT to have that!" I've had Technics for a long time, and bought two of the recent motorcycles, (8291 and 8051) because they reminded me of two of my real bikes. I even have 8880, and take it apart and put it back together periodically. So I figured I'd get the Unimog and have some fun with it. Then I saw the VW van in a Lego catalog, and figured that I liked it even more, just due to the interesting details. Plus it was cheaper than the Unimog, so hey, I can save some money. So I went to a Lego store with my wife. She suggested we set up a little winter scene, and wanted to get a couple of the Winter Village sets. I decided to get two modulars instead, (Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium) and try to make a winter scene with them. That was in November, and now I've got about $1100 worth of City sets, with the Maersk train, the Pet Shop, Public Transportation, City Corner, and some others. I still haven't bought the Unimog or the VW van. But the table where my city is set up is almost full, so perhaps a move to Technics is in order...

It's the 10 "meaningful" posts that will take me a while. I'm not a talker.

I love this game - it's kept me busy for a couple of months now, and I'm barely through 10% of the main quest line! I've become super powerful though, so I'm worried it's going to get boring.
-
Hello! I came out of my dark ages in November, and have been building my city since. I have the three most recent modulars and the Maersk train. I've also got a bunch of the smaller sets from last year and this year. It's been pretty expensive! I like EB, but it's not for lurkers. I keep wanting to view profiles to find people near me, but I can't until I have ten posts.

I came out of my dark ages in November. I went to a Lego store nearby and bought two of the modulars, and thought about getting the Emerald Night with them, just for some period ambiance. I didn't pick up the EN because I figured I'd pick it up after Christmas. Little did I know that it would be discontinued. Perhaps I should have researched before I blindly re-entered Lego!
-
A problem I have is that yes, you had three years to buy the EN, and that was plenty of time. However, I just came out of my dark ages at the end of November, and by the time I realized I wanted to add a train to my quickly-growing modular city, the EN was discontinued. So I added the Maersk, and that's fine - it serves a different purpose. And hey, you know what? Unless LEGO goes out of business, I'm pretty sure they'll have another train!
