It's true, the more detailed faces give each minifig a "personality" (at least how each person imagines it). i think that works for many themes. However, with space (CS in particular) where so much was left to the imagination, I just don't see the need for specific personalities. With all the different face prints today, I found my kids changing the heads of minifigs a lot to get the one that "matched" the role that person was supposed to have in their made-up game. I guess that adds to the play for kids. On the other hand, it means you want to have a lot of different face prints on hand. I thought about getting one of these, but one of my pet peeves about clothing is the "worn" or "distressed" look of some new clothes. I'd love to have a CS logo cap, but I refuse to pay for a new article of clothing that has been deliberately "distressed" just to make it look old. If I am going to pay for a new article of clothing, I want it to look new. Would anyone buy new Lego bricks that had been deliberately "aged" to look old, like "yellowed" white, for instance? I think not. (Sorry, for my little rant there.) Obviously some like this look, but it's not for me.

For many years Lego has had one freight and one passenger set in their lineup, so if the current freight set is retiring, then it's almost certain to be replaced with a new one. PowerUp is the current power system, so unless something new is coming, the next train will use PowerUp also.

Bricklink Designer Program Trains Sets | 2024 & Beyond
Space78 replied to RedBrick1's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Saw that at Brickworld-Chicago also. It was also great to see the other sets, especially the train station, since I ordered one before it sold out. It looks as good in person as it does in the pictures on BL. -
The beauty of CS is that there is no "story" - it's purely what the kid wanted it to be. I also think it's great that all the faces are the same (two eyes and smile) - could be any personality, gender, role you wanted it to be.

The article in that link says it has been confirmed they will be Insider Rewards sets, not GWP.

I'm going to guess and say that the limited amount of CS "style" sets released this year (just two GWPs - micro launchpad and space diner) are really to support the overall Space theme this year, but does not mean there are any general release CS-type sets coming or planned by Lego. When were those ads posted, and who is the intended audience on Instagram?
-
Right, but they did bring back space. It's the major theme this year with sets across multiple lines. I don't think those Instagram "hints" are for new CS sets, but rather the space theme. We just got the latest US Lego paper catalog in the mail. The cover and the first half of the catalog is all space themed sets. They seem to be really pushing space as THE theme this year, including anything remotely related to space. But there is not even a hint of anything remotely CS in that catalog.

Yup, I was on the fence, but decided to order it this afternoon, since it looks like it will be gone by tomorrow.

Yes, I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a percentage of the sales of the sets just to use his name.

It would probably make the most sense to think of this set as a "movie tie-in" set rather than a space set. Since the Pharrell Williams biopic is a Lego anmation movie, it was a forgone conclusion that there would be one (or maybe more) movie themed sets.
-
Excellent point. Maybe this is a licensed set, thereby raising the price?
-
Wow, can't imagine they'll sell many of these, especially at US $110. In my book it does not "count" as a "space" set. Certainly is a Pharrell Williams set, but it will be interesting how many of his fans want a Lego set like this. I'm always in favor of Lego animation. We'll see if his bio is interesting enough to make a good Lego animated film.

I doubt Lego will be having the Micro Rocket Launchpad again. Clearly they did not make many sets, since they were gone during the Insiders only GWP weekend and never made it to the general public.

LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
Space78 replied to Lyichir's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Yeah, my sentiments too. The original five where the primary colors: white, red, yellow, blue, black. So, it feels "right" to have the figures in the secondary colors of orange, green, and purple. To me brown was a bit odd, but livable. Beyond that, it's becoming "candy colors", like how many shades can we possibly do? While gray is a classic color, it was used for CS baseplates and in many CS sets on vehicles and spaceships, so I don't thing gray works for an astronaut color in the CS palette. However, having said all that, it's best to keep in mind that Lego is a business first and foremost, so what sells will always be the major consideration. -

Not thrilled with any of the colors, but I went with the bluish green. Didn't care for the "lime" color, or what I consider "raspberry". Agree with others that gold doesn't really stand out. It's nice to have a real contrast between the suit color and the colors in the logo. I still think they should have made purple as a "general release" figure. I don't know, moving into the "shades" colors kind of cheapens the CS figure colors to me. I mean it is classic space, so my preference is for classic colors. -
@zephyr1934 Intriguing layouts. I just "re-did" my Lego train table. A slight expansion, but I'm limited to 4 ft wide by about 10 ft long. I don't have a lot of long trains. At this point they are all regular Lego sets from the 9V and later eras. What are you using for couplers to get a 15 ft long train? Using Lego magnet couplers, I find at about 7 ft, the magnets on the lead engine don't want to hold.

LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
Space78 replied to Lyichir's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Alien Space Diner GWP is now out of stock in the U.S. I had a large PAB order to place and did that on Saturday. I was over $200, so I broke the order in two to get two GWPs. One box arrived with the set and the other did not! So I called Lego today, and was informed the GWP was sold out. Since it was listed on my order, they gave me 2,600 Insider points ($20) in place of the set. That was OK with me, since I was not going to open the second set anyway. I did build the one I got, and I have to say the set is better than I expected from the pictures. It is a nice little "diner" scene, whether it has a space theme or not. I included some orange oxygen tanks on my PAB order, so I can complete the orange astronaut. -
Thanks for the info. I'm not desperate for one at the moment. It's just surprising and a bit disappointing that Lego has been out of stock here for so long.
-
I'm still waiting for a good GWP or other deal to order this set. Hopefully, they've corrected the errors in the sets by now.
-
I downloaded the pdf version (thanks very much for making that available), but will put the paperback on my next Amazon order. I prefer physical copies when I can get them. I think the main issue right now for Lego train fans using power up is that the motor is currently out of stock at Lego, and has been for some time. The only way to get one seems to be to buy one of the train sets.

A great solution, but please be aware that the video shows the "two wheel" pickup for power from the 9V tracks. The next day he posted another video stating he determined the two wheel pickup does not work over 9V switches, since they have a significant "dead spot" near the points (where one side has no power). In the second video, he says he is now offering only four wheel trucks, which solves the issue with switches as electrical contact is always maintained. His first run is indeed sold out. It's a great solution using power functions motors for those of us using 9V track. I think solutions like this may make a revival of 9V track more possible. i doubt Lego will do it, but other enthusiasts might. Clearly it's feasible, it's more an issue of economy of scale. Need to sell enough to keep the price down and make it economically viable. Exciting times for 9V train enthusiasts! Here's the second video showing the issue with the two wheel trucks and his solution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRqMuTMJmR8

Agree it really needs some kind of landing gear. That's the main omission from this set.
-
I guess some will, though not me. Not worth $100 in other Lego to get the orange torso and helmet for my interest. I'd rather get double Insider points and/or a GWP that is more interesting. I've got one orange astronaut from a DK book. Can't say I need more. We'll see if the parts show up on PAB, including oxygen tanks. If so, I'll put in a PAB order along with other parts I need. I can only guess the interest in this GWP will be way below the Micro Rocket Launch set back in February. It will be interesting to see if they run out of these or they last the whole two weeks.

LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
Space78 replied to Lyichir's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Right, and as much as I like Benny's character in the movies, I don't have any CS minifigs in that bad of shape, so I feel like they kind of over-did it for his character. I have a number of CS minifig torsos where the gold is mostly or all gone, but none where the white or red have rubbed off. Also have cracked helmets, but none where the two parts are mis-aligned at the crack. I think Benny's owner abused him! -

I tend to agree that purple is unlikely to be on the list. Medium lavender might be a nice compromise, but maybe that's too close to pink? For me, the Lego colors are getting a bit out of hand with all the shades, so if those end up being the choices it doesn't really matter much to me what we get. So, in that vein, maybe gray is the best choice, since it is a "classic" space color and has not "officially" been done as a complete astronaut.
