Heroica RPG - Quest #48: Death's Homecoming

QM Note: Right you are: but Lycan is already wearing 2 artifacts. He'd have to take 2 turns to switch... Aquos replies plainly, not a hint of emotion seeping out of his voice. "No." This prince was remarkably nonchalant, to say the least. -

QM Note: They had a fossil of one! Also, yes. Thank Flipz for that one. ALSO: I messed up Aqos's type! Being a progg over 1,000 years old, he should be an ancient be default. Aquos himself will be changed to an ancient (his type has't effected you at all anyway) but his tentacles will remain Beasts (planned anyway.) I apologize for the hiccup, folks! If any of you have an issue with this, I'll change it back. Round Eight of the Battle With The Tentacled Terror >Punii attempts to take a nap but fails >Sylph heals Aquos (back): No heal Greater Heal (9x2=18+19=37 HP healed) >Alex VS Right Tentacle C (front): Special Damage Critical Hit (10x2=20+18=38 damage) >Lycan VS Right Tentacle A (front): Shield: Mug (14x3=42+13=55-2=52 damage, 53 gold earned, Combrys = WP: 15) >Johon chugs a mead (back) >Elgar VS Right Tentacle B (back): Hit Critical Hit (11x2=22+20=42x2=84-1=83 damage) >Galen VS Left Tentacle B (back): Hit Shield: Mug (10x3=30+15=45x2=90/2=45-1=44 damage, 44 gold earned) >Galen VS Hostage Tentacle (back): Damage Critical Hit (10x2=20+15=35x2=70/2=35-3=32 damage) >Sylph VS Hostage Tentacle (back): Special Damage Damage (23/2=12 damage) >Johon VS Big Tentacle (front): Damage Hit (21+8=29x2=58-2=56 damage, 56/4=14 damage decay placed) The battle with the ancient prince continues. The party batters the monstrosities tentacles, once again suceeding in severing one. As Aquos strikes Sylph, all of his tentacles submerge themselves back into the water. johon scores one last hit before they all descend out of reach. Only Aquos remained, his counterstirking disabled by his lack of tentacles... but he remained a formidable foe. "The plot thickens." Aquos, Level 28 Ancient HP: 1047/1100 SP: 18 Ether: 20/30 Specials: 1-2: Tentacle Lash: Does 28 damage to the hero who rolled Special Damage. The heroes above and below him in the battle order take 14 damage. 3-4: Ruckus: The sound of Aquos's tentacles clapping shakes loose some stalagmites, causing them to fall on top of the party. All heroes take 11 damage, disregarding SP. 5-6: Rhythmic Rampage: Grabs the hero who rolled Special Damage with his tentacles and slams him into all of his party members. The entire party (including the hero who rolled Special Damage) takes damage equal to that Party Member's power. 7-8: Catastrophe Cacophony: Nullifies all of the party's positive effects, and does 28 damage to the hero who rolled Special Damage. 0: Tail Swing: With a swing of his monstrous tail, Aquos does 18 damage to the entire party. Every party member has a 1/2 chance of being stunned for one round. (Can be remedied or removed for 5 ether.) Note: Aquos's specials are not randomized! The numbers before each special is how many tentacles Aquos must have up for him to use it. For example, if he has 5 tentacles revealed, he will always use Rhythmic Rampage. He will only ever use Tail Swing when he has no tentacle revealed. Passive Specials: Tentacle Guard: As long as Aquos has 1 tentacle up, he will be counterstriking. Ethereal Immunity: Aquos is immune to all scrolls. SP Constant: Aquos's SP can only be lowered by destroying his tentacles, and nothing else. Each tentacle destroyed drops his SP by 2. Hanging on a Thread: Aquos can have a minimum of 1 HP when he still has tentacles active! All of his tentacles must be destroyed before Aquos himself can be. When Aquos dies, the battle is won. Drops: Peculiar Egg, Garnet QM Note: Aquos has 8 different tentacles, and every round, he will raise different ones. It works off a cycle, a repeating pattern: if you can figure out which tentacles appear when, you will be able to strategize far more efficiently. I' say that it has to be taken before the battle. If you drank it now, its effects would occur in the next battle.

QM note: Helps me out, that is for sure. Also, once again, it was Johon's decay that finished off the tentacle, not his actual hit. I'll run a round this afternoon, I'm going to the Science Museum today. -
Although it is most certainly not in our job descirptions. Yes, I think in general giving a weapon an element is a nice way to keep it both unique and not soul-crushingly hard to caluclate at the same time.

One thing to note, as something I've noticed as a QM: Zepher, I'm not sure whether this battle was designed to be unwinnable for their current numbers, but it is just my opinion that if you're going to make an impossible battle, make it completely obvious. The boss of 46 would've had 9,999 HP, 999 SP (can't be defied, pierced, or lowered) and 999 levels, immune to all negative effects, but didnd't score free hits. The trick to drop all that stuff was to have Finnegan annoy the crap out of him, by the way. EDIT: Zepher, please note, this wasn't meant to bash you - the battle has quite the interesting mechanic, and the battle seems winnable to me. Just some thoughts I've had for quite a long time.

QM Note: Will fix, TBW. "You know, I must admit, I have been a rather back seat villain as of late. A bit of trivia for you disgusting little things: I'm the one who planned the rally. We had a Roast of Rhodus planned too, after all this invasion business was done, but that obviously isn't going to come to fruition now. I'm so glad The Regret is in our ranks, conversing with my brother isn't that much of a hassle. Oh, and he also told me to tell you to go get a pike and shove it up an orifice on your body where it doens't belong. Cheers." -

Sylph confuses Aquos with another heal, undoing all of the damage that had been given to him. Alex, Lycan, and Johon all hit their respective targets, Aquos leaving his atrget with only a speck of life in it. The decay that was imbued into the slimy arm by Johon soon caused the tentacle to wither and sink under the water, dead. Elgar flings a ball of ice at the the hosatge tentacle, taking care not to hurt the young alchemist in its grip. Galen misses twice -Sylph nearly does too, but he scores a lucky shot on the tentacle. The cavern rumbles as Aquos pulls out his remaining arsenal. "It'll only takes one streak of bad luck to send you to the grave, heroes." I'm already using random drops, actually: the party has a 1 in 6 chance of encountering a rare,1-of-a-kind Progg in every non-boss battle. For example, the rare progg in The Wound fight would've been the Progg Chameleon. I'd reccomend something that Flipz said, the chance of getting one of the rare Expert Class bosses to spawn going up as it gets tougher in the fields. -

From what I understand, though, I don't believe Threshold Monsters respawn (clarification on this?) Perhaps they are either buyable with GP or there are boss monsters that have a chance to spawn in Hard areas? Killing them would net you the expert class they embody. -

QM Note: I didn't, Capn. Sorry for the huge delay, not only did the dentist decide to go to town in my mouth, I celeberated my father's birthday today. Unfortunately todays dental appointment forbid me from eating the birthday ham... Round Six of the Battle With The Tentacled Terror >Punii begins whining for mommy and daddy - despite the fact he watche heroes kill his mother. >Sylph heals Aquos (back): No heal Heal (9+19=28 HP healed) >Alex VS Right Tentacle C (front): Special Damage Damage (20-13=7 damage) >Galen VS Left Tentacle B (back): Damage Critical Hit (10x2=20+15=35x2=70/2=35-1=34 damage) >Lycan: LEVEL UP! (back) >Galen VS Right Tentacle B (back): Damage Shield: Mug (10x3=30+15=45x2=90/2=45-1=44 damage, 44 gold earned) >Elgar VS Left Tentacle C (back): Critical Hit Critical Hit (11x2=22+20=42x2=84-2=82 damage) >Johon consumes Smelling Salts (back) >Johon VS Left Tentacle C (back): Damage Damage (20-6=14 damage) >Sylph heals himself (back): No heal Heal (9+19=28 HP healed) The battle continues. Punii's bawling is drowned out by Aquo's exorbitantly loud rhythm, his tentacles still clapping above his head. In an effort to prevent Aquos from damaging the party, Sylph heals the beast to appease him, undoing some of the damage from his previous laceration. Alex swings at one of the tentacles, but it veers left and strikes the paladin back. Galen whips two tentacles in rapid succesion. In between whippings, Lycan downs his Grogmas gift: a tantilizing level-up mushroom. The mouth watering treat bolsters his entire body, and he feels just by eating the fungus he has grown in experience. Elgar rolls out of the way from one of Aquos's flailing tentacles and strikes back with a ball of frigid ice. Johon takes a whiff of a battle of smelling salts, the pleasant fumes interrupted by a sharp stab from one of Aquos's disgusting appendages. Sylph heals himself, bracing himself... as Aquos pulls out his two biggest tentacles. All 5 tentacles clap above the abomination's head, emitting a sinister rhythm. "It is only a matter of time... Heh heh heh." Aquos, Level 28 Beast *Counterstriking!* HP: 1083/1100 SP: 22 Ether: 20/30 Specials: 1-2: Tentacle Lash: Does 28 damage to the hero who rolled Special Damage. Drops: Peculiar Egg, Garnet Left Tentacle C, Level 20 Beast HP: 26/250 SP: 2 Specials: Musical Mugging: Perfectly aligned with the beat, the tentacle slaps the hero who rolled special damage, stealing gold and doing damage equal to the hero's WP + SP. Stone Spike: Uses 4 of Aquos's ether to raise a spike of stone from the ground, doing 9 damage to the entire party, disregarding SP. If no ether left, nothing happens. Specials decided by die roll. Immune to Blindness and Sleep! Drops: 30 gold, potion. Note: When defeated, does an automatic 45 damage to Aquos and drops his SP by 2. Big Tentacle, Level 23 Beast HP: 325/325 SP: 3 Specials: Musical Grand Theft: Aquos steals gold and does damage to all heroes equal to each hero's SP + WP. Tentalce Slam: Picks up the hero who rolled Special Damage and smashes him into the hero next in the battle order, doing 23 damage to both. Specials decided by die roll. Immune to Sleep, Blindness, and Sealing! Drops: Phoenix Essence, Elixir, Trial Brew Note: When defeated, does an automatic 45 damage to Aquos and drops his SP by 2. Right Tentacle A, Level 18 Beast *Badly Poisoned!* HP: 70/250 SP: 2 Specials: Musical Mugging: Perfectly aligned with the beat, the tentacle slaps the hero who rolled special damage, stealing gold and doing damage equal to the hero's WP + SP. Stone Wall: Uses 4 of Aquos's ether to raise a stone wall, halving all damage done to all enemies next round. Specials decided by die roll. Immune to Blindness and Sealing! Drops: 30 gold, tonic Right Tentacle C, Level 20 Beast HP: 207/250 SP: 2 Specials: Musical Mugging: Perfectly aligned with the beat, the tentacle slaps the hero who rolled special damage, stealing gold and doing damage equal to the hero's WP + SP. Stone Wall: Uses 4 of Aquos's ether to raise a stone wall, halving all damage done to all enemies next round. Specials decided by die roll. Immune to Blindness and Sealing! Drops: 30 gold, tonic Hostage Tentacle, Level 23 Beast *Holding Punii!* HP: 303/325 SP: 3 Specials: Kablammo: Uses Punii's bombs to detonate a devastating blast, doing 17 fire elemental damage to the entire party. The hero who rolled Special Damage has their SP granting items overheat from the blast, disabling their SP for the rest of the round and 2 after. (Unremediable and unremoavable.) Rockslide: Uses 6 of Aquos's ether to generate a mighty rock slide, doing 13 damage to the entire party, disregarding SP. if no ether left, defaults to Kablammo. Specials decided by dice roll. Immune to Venoms, Blindness, and Sealing! Drops: Punii (usable the turn after he is freed), 60 gold QM Note: Aquos has 8 different tentacles, and every round, he will raise different ones. It works off a cycle, a repeating pattern: if you can figure out which tentacles appear when, you will be able to strategize far more efficiently. Tentacle Chart: >Left Tentacle B: Level 19, HP: 98/250, SP: 1 *Badly Poisoned!* >Left Tentacle C: Level 20, HP: 26/250, SP: 2 >Big Tentacle: Level 20, HP: 325/325, SP: 3 >Right Tentacle A: Level 18, HP: 70/250, SP: 2 *Badly Poisoned!* >Right Tentacle B: Level 19, HP: 141/250, SP: 1 *Badly Poisoned!* >Right Tentacle C: Level 20, HP: 207/250, SP: 2 >Hostage Tentacle: Level 23, HP: 303/325, SP: 2 The Party: Sylph Solanum (Dannylonglegs) *Party Leader!* *Lucky!* *Hastened!* unknown age, unknown race Druid Level 19.5 Power: 27 (19+7+1) Defense: 0 Health: 35/35c(9+17+7+1) Ether: 14/23 (5+16+1) Gold: 19 Equipment: Shrapnel Bow (WP: 9, Bow *Deadly Envenomed!*. Much to Aquos's confusion, no sound bounced back from inside the helmet. It didn't go through - it wasn't just an empty suit. It is as if the sound... just didn't bounce back. Odd. "You're quite the curious appetizer, druid..." -

Perfect, thank you! I may be doing a stopmotion, and I just wanted to see how they scaled together before my Warp Stinger came in the mail. Looks like a fair matchup to me.

Impressive! Amazing how one normally wouldn't even see red team unless they were looking for the poor fellows. Could you do a compraison shot with the Warp Stinger and one of your Vermin Vaporizers?
