Reimagine/Redesign 42113
howitzer replied to 1963maniac's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
There's the Future set wishes and speculation thread, in which this kind of discussion would fit properly... -
I think you're right here, especially on the latter part of your comment. I find it much more i compelling to comment on a thread that presents the MOC properly, with nice photos and especially proper description of the functions. I also like it when the maker tells some background on the making of the thing, and reflects on the possible shortcomings and difficulties in the making of it. Another matter is that there are some kinds of creations which simply are not interesting to me, no matter how they are made or presented.

Looks great, definitely one of my favourites in this contest! -
I think the rule is quite clear, a quote from the entry topic: "One or more images (max 4). You can have combined pictures (4 in 1) as long as the picture isn't bigger than 1024x1024." So you can link up to 4 image files in your post, with maximum size of 1024x1024 pixels each. You can combine more photos in a single image, as long as the size isn't exceeded.

General Part Discussion
howitzer replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yep, allowing 8 and 24T gears to pass right next to a bushing is sometimes quite an important feature. You're right about the squared pins though, that's really baffling as even official sets often take advantage of the pins that accept a bar, so why not have all pins that way (or at least those with no axle...)- 5,505 replies

General Part Discussion
howitzer replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Molds have to be replaced after certain amount of use, and that's a great opportunity for introducing improved design, in this case it appears that the slot was shortened for additional strength.- 5,505 replies

The 6575 part (Technic cam) is very much a contemporary part, it was for example included in 42114 and 42125. -
I'm also in the opinion that the panels in question count as studless, mostly by the virtue of having no studs nor anti-studs (unless you count the pinhole as anti-stud). Also, I don't think the spirit of the contest is an absolute ban on any studful-era parts but rather, remaking a studful set into studless in a way that it feels like a modern set. Of course those panels haven't been seen in official sets in many years, but then, same goes for many other parts in sets of other entrants, and there's no telling if TLG will a) discontinue a current part b) bring an old part back. So I don't think that's a good argument against using a certain part. Besides, that panel looks great and is really nice parts usage. When there is a perfect part for a job, I don't see a reason to discount it because of a more or less arbitrary limitation.

I don't use Studio because I don't like the UI, but I use LeoCAD instead. Usually when building something more complex, I'll model it on computer while building it also IRL, as that seems to minimize the amount of taking apart and rebuilding models. I like building without digital tools more but with Technic it's just really hard to think ahead enough to avoid constant disassembly-reassembly loop, which takes the fun out of building. Smaller models (like my TC20 entry) I've built without digital tools though.

[TC20] 856 bulldozer revival
howitzer replied to Toitoine's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
But does the geometry work out? I mean, axle and connectors allow a slight misalignment of holes, while a liftarm doesn't. -

Couple of other thoughts: If you're keeping the new style tracks, maybe use yellow sprockets if you have them? The black ones with the black tracks are so... black. Also, it's a very small thing but the brown axle with stop in the linkage somehow rubs me in the wrong way, I'd change it for either LBG 3L axle-pin or frictionless 3L pin and find a way to connect them in the middle. Other than these, it's a really nice and faithful recreation of the original. -

I prefer the old style tracks, the new style feels too wide. Nothing wrong with using the old style either, as both the track links and the 40T gears are still very much in use. -
There was the 8082 Multi Control Set in 1993, which included a remote-controlled (by wire) car model. But if you disregard that, I guess the dozer of 2007 was indeed the first RC set. I also dislike this trend of introducing more and more RC sets, and I'd even drop the motorization out of the majority of sets. The Tow truck is a great demonstration of how you can make an interesting set without motors, and electronics just make the sets that much more expensive, especially if you make them RC. "Dumb" motorized sets (42055, 42082 etc.) at least get a lot done with just one motor and dumb battery box, while RC sets must have at least two motors and C+ hub (or IR receivers before) which raises the price a lot. If you keep buying sets, after a while you'll have quite a collection of motors and hubs, and how many do you really need?

How is it that this set is spawning so many awesome alternate models, each apparently better than the original set? Great work! -
Technic 2021 Set Discussion
howitzer replied to LvdH's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Were the three new sets (Zetros, Tow truck, Raptor) supposed to be released at the same time? For some reason Raptor can be ordered right now at lego.com while the other two have "coming soon" labels on them... -
I'm actually impressed by the Zetros' performance, considering it's a set designed for the retail market (with all the limitations that brings) and not an independent build pushing parts to their limits and utilizing third party tires and a third axle. The PF XL motors are of course also more powerful than PU L motors, though I'm not sure how much the voltage increase compensates for that (probably significantly). The turning radius is of course still a joke. This begs the question of how much the Zetros could be improved with additional axle and better tyres.

Help get LEGO to re-release retired sets!
howitzer replied to Kirin's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That's not exactly streamlining the process though, it's just replacing old with new. Except if something fundamentally changes about the machines on a way that they can operate on much higher efficiency, last significantly longer, or something like that. Streamlining processes is about for example making sure that the waiting times are minimized or making sure there's no excess transportation capacity in one place and too little in another. -

howitzer replied to Kirin's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Yeah, TLG has had a long time to streamline the process, but there's diminishing returns, for every possible avenue of streamlining, an increasing investment is necessary and at some point it's just not feasible anymore. I believe they have already done pretty much everything there is to be done with this and the ever increasing number of elements is a testament to that, they couldn't keep releasing new molds and recolouring old ones year after year if they hadn't spent a lot of effort in streamlining their process. So I think the gains of streamlining have gone mostly into developing new stuff, instead of either bringing prices down or bringing back the old stuff that has at some point been discontinued.
